Has CAPITALISM lost its 'MORAL' compass? APEC summit RUSSIA 2012 Debate PART 2
Has CAPITALISM lost its 'MORAL' compass? APEC summit RUSSIA 2012 Debate PART 2 Has capitalism lost its compass? How should capitalism be defined? How flawed is the system and could it still be revived? And is there any real alternative to capitalism? Peter Lavelle is discussing these issues with his distinguished panelists at the APEC 2012 summit hold in Vladivostok. Jim Rogers and Artyom Volynets are there to defend capitalism in its modern form, while Chandran Nair and Frank-Jurgen Richter are arguing that capitalism has indeed lost its compass. Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC was established in 1989 to enhance economic growth and prosperity for the region and to strengthen the Asia-Pacific community. As of now, APEC has 21 members - Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; People's Republic of China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; The Republic of the Philippines; The Russian Federation; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; United States of America; Viet Nam - which account for approximately 41% of the world's population, approximately 55% of world GDP and about 49% of world trade. 24th APEC Summit will be held in the city of Vladivostok, Russian Federation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Capitalism is an economic system that is based on private ownership of the means of production and the creation of goods or services for profit. Other elements central to capitalism include competitive markets, wage labor and capital accumulation. There are multiple variants of capitalism, including laissez-faire, welfare capitalism and state capitalism. Capitalism is considered to have been applied in a variety of historical cases, varying in time, geography, politics, and culture. There is general agreement that capitalism became dominant in the Western world following the demise of feudalism. Competitive markets may also be found in market-based alternatives to capitalism such as market socialism and co-operative economics. Economists, political economists and historians have taken different perspectives on the analysis of capitalism. Economists usually emphasize the degree to which government does not have control over markets (laissez faire), as well as the importance of property rights. Most political economists emphasize private property as well, in addition to power relations, wage labor, class, and the uniqueness of capitalism as a historical formation. The extent to which different markets are free, as well as the rules defining private property, is a matter of politics and policy. Many states have what are termed mixed economies, referring to the varying degree of planned and market-driven elements in a state's economic system. A number of political ideologies have emerged in support of various types of capitalism, the most prominent being economic liberalism. The term capitalism gradually spread throughout the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries largely through the writings of Karl Marx TAGS: CapitalWatch 2012 capitalism lost moral compass defined flawed system alternative Peter Lavelle discussing issues distinguished panellists APEC summit Vladivostok Jim Rogers Artyom Volynets defend modern Chandran Nair Frank-Jürgen Richter arguing Asia-Pacific Economic economy finance supply demand debt credit capital banks mortgage free limit EU US UK million Billion poverty price cost socialism social Cooperation premier forum facilitating growth cooperation trade market import export investment region established 1989 enhance prosperity strengthen community wealth rich money cash liber scandal crisis government Q&A; leaders communism gold silver oil gas fuel energy resources china jobs work employment unemployment provide food water housing education population companies business corporation tax payers goldman sachs JPMorgan NWO Investment Banking- published: 27 Mar 2014

Russia APEC Preview 2012 News
Vladivostok in the far eastern corner of Russia used to be a military city where no foreign nationals were permitted until two decades ago. But now as the European economy weakens and the Asian economy expands the city - which is closer to China s capital than Moscow - is receiving more and more Asian immigrants. A large number of Asian restaurants have opened up in every corner of the city as well as more and more Chinese products being sold in the local markets. One local resident Elena Makhura said she was afraid of the high volume of Chinese immigrants. I would prefer to see more Russian people living here than Chinese people she said. But Russian people are trying to move out of the here. The Russian economy which traditionally heavily relies on the European economy was hit as Europe faced its financial crisis. But for those Chinese migrant workers this port city still offers a better opportunity than their home town in China. The salary is better and higher than in China said Mr Wang a chef from Helong Jiang Province China. The locals however see the economic situation differently. The reason why people are leaving is because of low salary here said local resident Elena Makhura. As Vladivostok hosts the APEC Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit this weekend the change in the city reflects Russia s willingness to strengthen its ties with the Asia-Pacific regions. Vladimir Miklashevsky the governor of Primorye a province in Vladivostok said they wanted to develop cooperation its neighbours and attract investment. In order to reflect their interest Moscow has boosted the city s infrastructure. Vladivostok now has as one of the worlds longest cable bridges and the Far Eastern Federal University is being upgraded and extended. The bridge caught fire in 2011 during construction but the cable stays were reportedly unaffected and it has been completed on time.- published: 01 Nov 2013

Russia APEC 4 2012 News
Delegations from 21 countries in the Asia-Pacific region held bilateral talks in the Russian city of Vladivostok on Saturday on the sidelines of the APEC Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and the Japanese delegation. She also met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Singapore s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong earlier on Saturday. While APEC leaders hold talks on the sidelines of the main economic summit Asia s two major economies Japan and China have announced no plan to hold bilateral talks. China and Japan remain immersed in a long-running battle over what the Japanese call the Senkaku Islands and the Chinese call Diaoyutai in the East China Sea. The landing on the islands by activists from Hong Kong and Japan last month triggered the nation wide anti-Japan protests in China. Speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of the summit a spokesman for the Chinese delegation called for greater understanding from Japan over the issue. The Japanese side should face squarely up to the strong reserves and determination of the Chinese government and the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity he said. Meanwhile Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his Indonesia counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Summit host Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Noda and New Zealand s Prime Minister John Key. APEC joins economies - both huge and tiny rich and poor - accounting for about half of world economic activity. Given its status as an organisation governed by consensus APEC is not known for major policy breakthroughs.- published: 01 Nov 2013

Russia APEC 3 2012 News
APEC Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum Summit leaders gathered for a family photo on Sunday morning in Vladivostok on the last day of meeting. Russia s first deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov later spoke about what the summit had achieved - and what opportunities would present themselves for his country following APEC. He said the APEC Summit has been successful and the prospects are good while emphasising that Russia is open and ready for cooperation with foreign investors. Foreign companies can buy agricultural lands with no restrictions. And if this business grows we think that export opportunities will be permanently increasing Igor Shuvalov said. Shuvalov also expressed hope that the relations with the US will improve and the two nations would co-operate for the economic prosperity of both sides. Our position is that it doesn t matter who was elected by the America people to be in power because business is business. And the Americans should feel that they can always profit in working with Russians Shuralov added. He also dismissed allegations that the APEC summit held in Vladivostok which ends on Sunday won t achieve any long term gains. Shuralov said Russia had high hopes for the future of the country. I think after five years the situation will radically change and the prospects especially for young people will be different here and they will understand that he stated.- published: 01 Nov 2013
