Edward Snowden: Here's how we take back the Internet
Appearing by telepresence robot, Edward Snowden speaks at TED2014 about surveillance and Internet freedom. The right to data privacy, he suggests, is not a partisan issue, but requires a fundamental rethink of the role of the internet in our lives — and the laws that protect it. "Your rights matter," he say, "because you never know when you're going to need them." Chris Anderson interviews, with special guest Tim Berners-Lee.
Whistleblower Snowden to US TV: 'I was trained as a spy'
In his first full interview with US television, fugitive NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has insisted that he used to be a fully-fledged American spy. Granted asylum in Russia, Snowden spoke to NBC TV at a hotel near the Kremlin and rejected critics' claims that he only ever held a junior post. "I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word in that I lived and worked undercover," he said. "I have worked for the Central Intelligence Agency undercover, overseas. [FULL] Edward Snowden Exclusive Interview with NBC Brian Williams [FULL] Edward Snowden Exclusive Interview with NBC Brian Williams [FULL] Edward Snowden Exclusive Interview with NBC Brian Williams Edward Snowden, in an exclusive interview with "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, blamed the State Department for stranding him in Russia, saying he "never intended" to wind up there. "I personally am surprised that I ended up here," Snowden said in the interview, an excerpt of which aired on TODAY on Wednesday morning. Snowden's comments about his new home came in an extended, wide-ranging interview with Williams, his first with a U.S. television network, airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. "The reality is I never intended to end up in Russia," he said. "I had a flight booked to Cuba onwards to Latin America and I was stopped because the United States government decided to revoke my passport and trap me in Moscow Airport. "So when people ask why are you in Russia, I say, 'Please ask the State Department." Secretary of State John Kerry hit back in a live interview on TODAY. "For a supposedly smart guy, that's a pretty dumb answer, frankly," Kerry said. "If Mr. Snowden wants to come back to the United States today, we'll have him on a flight today. "We'd be delighted for him to come back. He should come back. That's what a patriot would do. A patriot would not run away and look for refuge in Russia or Cuba or some other country. A patriot would stand up in the United States and make his case to the American people," Kerry added. "He can come home but he's a fugitive from justice which is why he is not being permitted to fly around the world," he said. Asked whether he had changed his mind about the nature of Snowden's actions, Kerry said Snowden "stole" information and did "great damage" to the United States. "The fact is if he cares so much about America and he believes in America, he should trust in the American system of justice," Kerry said. "But to be hiding in Russia, an authoritarian country, and to have just admitted he was really just trying to get to Cuba — what does that tell you?" he added. "I think he's confused. I think it's very sad." In an interview with Chuck Todd on MSNBC, Kerry called Snowden a "coward" and a "traitor." "There are many a patriot. You can go back to the Pentagon Papers with Dan Ellsberg and others who stood and went to court system of America and made their case." He said Snowden's leaks had concrete effects. "What he's done is expose for terrorists a lot of mechanisms which now affect operational security of those terrorists and make it harder for the United States to break up plots, harder to protect our nation," he said. Kerry was also asked about Snowden's exclusive NBC News interview while appearing on CBS. "He should man up and come back to the United States," the secretary of state said. Glenn Greenwald: No Place to Hide - Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State
Harvard Book Store welcomed political commentators Glenn Greenwald and Noam Chomsky for a discussion of Greenwald's latest book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State. In May 2013, Glenn Greenwald set out for Hong Kong to meet an anonymous source who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying and insisted on communicating only through heavily encrypted channels. That source turned out to be the 29-year-old NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and his revelations about the agency's widespread, systemic overreach proved to be some of the most explosive and consequential news in recent history, triggering a fierce debate over national security and information privacy. As the arguments rage on and the government considers various proposals for reform, it is clear that we have yet to see the full impact of Snowden's disclosures. Now for the first time, Greenwald fits all the pieces together, recounting his high-intensity eleven-day trip to Hong Kong, examining the broader implications of the surveillance detailed in his reporting for The Guardian, and revealing fresh information on the NSA's unprecedented abuse of power with never-before-seen documents entrusted to him by Snowden himself. Going beyond NSA specifics, Greenwald also takes on the establishment media, excoriating their habitual avoidance of adversarial reporting on the government and their failure to serve the interests of the people. Finally, he asks what it means both for individuals and for a nation's political health when a government pries so invasively into the private lives of its citizens—and considers what safeguards and forms of oversight are necessary to protect democracy in the digital age. Coming at a landmark moment in American history, No Place to Hide is a fearless, incisive, and essential contribution to our understanding of the U.S. surveillance state.- published: 19 May 2014

Former U.S. Spy Agency Contractor Edward Snowden Says He Was Not Just a Low Level Analyst
Fugitive former U.S. Spy agency contractor Edward Snowden sits down with NBC News' Brian Williams and says to call him a low level analyst is misleading. Full Story: NBC News landed an interview with fugitive former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden that will air Wednesday night in a one-hour special. NBC News' "Nightly News" anchor and managing editor Brian Williams flew to Moscow last week after months of preparation and negotiations for Snowden's first interview with a U.S. television network. "What I do is I put systems to work for the United States. And I've done that at all levels from -- from the bottom on the ground all the way to the top. Now, the government might deny these things, they might frame it in certain ways and say, "Oh well, you know, he's -- he's a low level analyst. But what they're trying to do is they're trying to use one position that I've had in a career here or there to distract from the totality of my experience which is that I've worked for the Central Intelligence Agency undercover overseas, I've worked for the National Security Agency undercover overseas and I've worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency as a lecturer at the Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy where I developed sources and methods for keeping our information and people secure in the most hostile and dangerous environments around the world. So when they say I'm a low level systems administrator, that I don't know what I'm talking about, I'd say it's somewhat misleading," Snowden told NBC. The network says the meeting lasted five-hours and took place at the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski just across the Moscow River from the Kremlin and Red Square. Last year, Snowden, who had been working at an NSA facility as an employee of Booz Allen Hamilton, leaked a raft of secret documents that revealed a vast U.S. government system for monitoring phone and Internet data. The leaks deeply embarrassed the Obama administration, which in January banned U.S. eavesdropping on the leaders of friendly countries and allies and began reining in the sweeping collection of Americans' phone data in a series of limited reforms triggered by Snowden's revelations. To many in government and at the NSA, Snowden is a traitor who compromised the security of the United States. But for many he is a hero who protected privacy and civil liberties. A Christmas Message From Edward Snowden
On December 25th 2013 Edward Snowden delivered an alternative Christmas message on the UK's channel 4 TV station. Before the broadcast a short version of the speech was leaked and immediatly uploaded to youtube. That upload was immediatly blocked but many re-uploads made the clip available everywhere. This is one of those places. If you want to thank Edward Snowden for giving up his relationship, familiy, job and any chance of a normal life to inform us all go here (http://freesnowden.is/donate/index.html) and donate. Or spread his message. And do something with it. Because if something is done all of Edward's sacrifices have meaning.
