The Renminbi (RMB, sign: ¥; code: CNY; also CN¥, 元 and CN元) is the official currency of China (People's Republic of China). Renminbi is legal tender in mainland China, but not in Hong Kong or Macau. It is issued by the People's Bank of China, the monetary authority of China. Its name (simplified Chinese: 人民币; traditional Chinese: 人民幣; pinyin: rénmínbì) means "people's currency".

The primary unit of renminbi is the yuán (元). One yuan is subdivided into 10 jiǎo (角), which in turn is subdivided into 10 fēn (分). Renminbi banknotes are available in denominations from 1 jiao to 100 yuan (¥0.1–100) and coins have denominations from 1 fen to 1 yuan (¥0.01–1). Thus, some denominations exist in coins and banknotes, but they are usually used in coins if under ¥1. Coins under ¥0.1 are used infrequently.

Through most of its history, the value of the renminbi was pegged to the U.S. dollar. As China pursued its gradual transition from central planning to a market economy, and increased its participation in foreign trade, the renminbi was devalued to increase the competitiveness of Chinese industry. It has been claimed that the current official exchange rate is lower than the value of the renminbi by purchasing power parity, undervalued by as much as 37.5% (see below).

Barry Eichengreen (born 1952) is an American economist who holds the title of George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Professor of Economics and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1987. Eichengreen's mother is Lucille Eichengreen, a Holocaust survivor and author.

He has done research and published widely on the history and current operation of the international monetary and financial system. He received his BA from UC Santa Cruz and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1979. He was a senior policy advisor to the International Monetary Fund in 1997 and 1998, although he has since been critical of the IMF.

His best known work is the book Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1919-1939, Oxford University Press, 1992. In his own book on the Great Depression, Ben Bernanke summarized Eichengreen's thesis as follows:

The main evidence Eichengreen adduces in support of this view is the fact that countries that abandoned the gold standard earlier saw their economies recover more quickly.

Fabrizio Zilibotti (born September 7, 1964) is an Italian economist. He is currently the Head of the Chair of Macroeconomics and Political Economy of the University of Zürich's Department of Economics. Zilibotti was previously Professor of Economics at University College London and at the Institute for International Economic Studies in Stockholm. A former managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies, he is currently the chief editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Growth and of China Economic Review. He is a fellow of the Econometric Society and of the CEPR. He is the co-director of the UBS Center for Economics in Society.

His research interests include economic growth and development, political economy, macroeconomics, financial economics, and industrial organization.

He has published papers in the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Economic Journal, European Economic Review, International Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Economic Growth, and Journal of the European Economic Association.
