AL JOLSON in "A PLANTATION ACT" 1926
A copy of A Plantation Act was found in the National Archives, mislabeled as a preview for The Jazz Singer, universally known as 'the first talkie' produced by Warner Brothers. The accompanying vitaphone soundtrack disc was also found inside a film storage garage in the Midwest . However, the disc was broken up into 5 pieces. Audio technicians under the auspices of the UCLA film preservation society, chemically bonded the fragments together and re-recorded the soundtrack, digitally removing the pops and clicks created by the disc damage. What emerged here is the short film from 1926 that was the per-cursor to "The Jazz Singer". "A Plantation Act" is in fact, the first all talking film (short) that Jolson starred in. It was filmed 'live' at the then New York City Opera House and subsequently opened in October of 1926 at the Colony Theater in New York. As fans will know, the restored copy is also now available on the Jazz Singer special DVD set by Warner Brothers. Most enthusiasts believe (and rightly so), that this 10 minute short is probably the closest we can come today to seeing Al Jolson live, as he would have performed on stage. It is, indeed, a remarkable piece of entertainment history!- published: 30 Sep 2013

Miss Universe Winner 1926-2013
The International Pageant of Pulchritude, also known as the International Beauty Contest or the Miss Universe Contest, was a beauty contest that began in 1926, featuring contestants from multiple nations. The last pageant event in the U.S. was held in 1931 although additional Miss Universe events were held until 1935. The pageant was the first international contest and served as a model for modern contests. The contest originated in Galveston, Texas, United States. The last Miss Universe event of this pre-World War II era was held in Brussels, Belgium. Though this contest served as a model and inspiration for the modern Miss Universe contests, the modern organization has no direct affiliation with these older contests. Miss Universe is an annual international beauty contest that is run by the Miss Universe Organization. Along with the Miss Earth and Miss World contests, Miss Universe is one of the three largest beauty pageants in the world in terms of the number of national-level competitions to participate in the world finals.[1][2][3] The contest was founded in 1952 by the California clothing company Pacific Mills. The pageant became part of Kayser-Roth, and then Gulf+Western Industries, before being acquired by Donald Trump in 1996.[4][5] The pageant is broadcast in the United States on NBC-TV, simulcast in Spanish on Telemundo, and webcast on Xbox Live. In 1998, Miss Universe changed its name from Miss Universe, Inc., to the Miss Universe Organization, and the headquarters moved from Los Angeles, California, to New York City that year. Donald Trump brought in a new team of professionals to the contest headed by its new CEO, Molly Miles, and president Maureen Reidy.[6] The contest would use the slogan "Redefined for Today" for promotion of the pageants.[7] In 1998, the logo of Miss Universe -- "the woman with stars" -- was born, representing the beauty and responsibility of women around the Universe. The current Miss Universe is Gabriela Isler of Venezuela who was crowned on November 9, 2013 in Moscow, Russia. Miss Universe is part of the Big Four international beauty pageants.- published: 30 Jan 2014

It's the Old Army Game (1926) - Louise Brooks, W. C. Fields
Director: A. Edward Sutherland Writers: J.P. McEvoy (play), W.C. Fields (play) Stars: W.C. Fields, Louise Brooks and Blanche Ring Short Summary by Les Adams: Elmer Pettywillie is the owner of a small drug store in Florida, and Mildred Marshall is his clerk. Business is slow until George Delevan leases space in the store to sell New York real estate. Business is good, especially for George, but the sheriff comes looking for him and he departs the premises for places unknown. Elmer feels that he has been an unknowing accomplice in a con-game, and he heads for New York in his old Ford. But he heads in the wrong direction, gets lost a few times, gives up and starts back to his drugstore. Many townsmen are rushing toward him as he drives up the street, but they are running to congratulate him as George as returned bearing profits for all the local investors. All is well, other than Elmer ending up as a very reluctant fourth-party in a double-wedding ceremony.- published: 18 Nov 2012
