 75th; Anniversary
of the Minimum Wage

In Los Angeles: Thursday, October 24th at 5:30 pm
Meet by the Jack In The Box, KFC and Taco Bell
1414 W Martin Luther King Blvd

We call on everyone who believes in justice to support this call to make the 75th anniversary of the first minimum wage in the U.S., WORKERS DEMAND A RAISE DAY

$15 an Hour - Because We Can't Survive on $7.25
The first national minimum wage of 25 cents an hour went into effect on Oct. 24, 1938. Establishing a minimum wage was part of the Fair Labor Standards Act that Congress approved in the summer of that year. Unfairly paid workers who work at fast food restaurants and giant chain stores like Walmart are a big part of the 99% and they are rising up and demanding a $15 an hour living wage. All of us need to support these brave workers and we also need to join them. Whether you work at one of the fast food chain stores, a big restaurant, one of the chain box stores, or in an office building, hotel, factory, clothing store or a hospital, there is a good chance that you are being paid somewhere between $7.25 (the current national minimum wage) and $10 dollars an hour. As the fast food workers like to say "you can't survive on $7.25". Many young people, especially youth of color stand a better chance of ending up in prison before finding a job. As the 1% gets richer every day many workers, especially immigrant workers, are paid even less than the minimum wage, and are forced to live and work under the threat of constant harassment and fear. In truth, even a minimum wage of $15 dollars an hour is not enough to pay your bills. It is only a big step in the right direction. On top of being unfairly paid, many workers who need full-time jobs are being forced to work part time or on a temporary basis. Most unfairly paid workers have little or no benefits. And more and more workers can't even find any job, especially a good paying one. Help turn the 75th anniversary of the first minimum wage into an opportunity to say through rallies, marches and protests around the country that workers' needs should come before greed and profits. The idea of making the 75th anniversary of the minimum wage a day for everyone to demand a raise for unfairly paid workers was proposed and approved at a Baltimore Workers Assembly meeting on Sept 1. The proposal was inspired by the many unfairly paid workers who testified at the Baltimore Workers Assembly.

Alert -
People's Attorney Lynne Stewart DENIED Compassionate Release by Federal Bureau of Prisons

Protest at Westwood Fed. Bldng

11000 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, Tuesday, July 9th at 5 pm

Seventy-three year old people's attorney Lynne Stewart is suffering with 4th stage breast cancer and fighting for her life in prison. Thousands of signers have petitioned for her release so that she can receive proper medical attention and be with her loved ones. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has rejected it. Stewart was jailed in 2005 on a charge of providing material support for terrorism. She was accused only of distributing a press release on behalf of her jailed client, Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman. Her sentence, which was originally 28 months, increased to 10 years in 2010 at the decision of Southern District of New York Judge John G. Koeltl.
The call for compassionate release for Lynne Stewart has received support from peace and justice activists across the country and around the world, and her husband Ralph Poynter, anti-war and social justice organizations and others individuals are not giving up. Support actions will continue in order to keep up the pressure including a series of demonstrations in NYC at Foley Square and a protest at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in DC on July 12th. Go to www.iacenter.org for details on the national protests and to www.lynnestewart.org for more information on Lynne Stewart's case.

Join with International Action Center as we unite with all the other protestors in July to send a message to the Bureau of Prisons that Lynne Stewart is not alone!
RELEASE LYNNE STEWART NOW!

The Central Park Five
A documentary by Ken Burns, David McMahon & Sarah Burns
Saturday, July 13th, 7 pm
5278 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles

The Central Park Five exposes how the New York Police Department used good-cop/bad-cop tactics and coerced five Black youth into giving false confessions to a brutal rape and beating in 1989. When the actual rapist confessed in 2002, four of the Five had already served their entire sentences. They were already out of jail; their young lives already stolen. On TV detective shows, this kind of tactic is celebrated and treated as heroic. But the film exposes it as devious, bullying and integral to the racist character of mass incarceration. Come and discuss this important film in the context of deepening poverty for young people today, the massive increase in the U.S. prison population, and the national epidemic of racist police brutality. Come view the film and join the discussion afterwards with KPFK supporters and movement activists at the Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice. All are welcome! top

Anti-War Protest
Wed, July 10th at 5 pm at the corner of Western & Wilshire
Part of Nationally Coordinated Days of Action
No U.S./NATO/Israeli War Against Syria!

The White House?s June 13th announcement that it would begin directly supplying arms to the opposition in Syria is a dramatic escalation of the U.S./NATO war against that country. Thousands of U.S. troops and intelligence personnel are training opposition forces and coordinating operations in Turkey and Jordan. Israel, the recipient of more than $3 billion annually in U.S. military aid, has carried out heavy bombing raids against Syria. The Pentagon has developed plans for a ?no-fly? zone over Syria, threatening a new U.S. air war.

The pretext for this escalation is the assertion, presented without any actual evidence, that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons in the conflict that has been raging for more than two years. Like their predecessors, President Obama and other top U.S. officials pretend to be concerned about ?democracy? and ?human rights? in Syria, but their closest allies in the campaign against Syria are police-state, absolute monarchies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Just as the false claim of ?weapons of mass destruction? was used as justification for the invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003, the allegations that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian military is meant to mask the real motives of Washington and its allies. Their aim is to carry out ?regime change,? as part of the drive to create a ?new Middle East.?

The invasion of Iraq in 2003, the U.S.-backed Israeli war in Lebanon in 2006, the 2011 NATO bombing of Libya, the now-escalating war in Syria and the growing threats against Iran are part of a coordinated regional effort by the United States, Britain and France to dominate this oil-rich and strategic region.

The U.S. government cuts basic services and has eliminated hundreds of thousands of public sector workers jobs in the last three years in the name of a discredited austerity which has destroyed the economy, but has unlimited billions available for wars of aggression and NSA [National Security Agency] surveillance of almost every American.

We join together to call for National Days of Action, June 28 - July 17, 2013, to demand:
? Stop the U.S./NATO/Israeli war and forms of intervention against Syria!
? Self-determination free from outside intervention for the Syrian people!
? Fund people?s needs, not the military!
? U.S. Out of the Middle East!

Stop shutting schools and post offices and SHUT DOWN U.S. WARS INSTEAD!
