Nomina Sacra: Holy Abbreviations | First Fragments (pt 11)
Some of the earliest Christian manuscripts have a very peculiar feature: they abbreviate the various names of God. We’re not sure why they did it, but their scribal practice has influenced Christian art down to our own times.
The First Fragments exhibition runs in the Chester Beatty, Dublin, until 3 September 2023, and entrance is free. Further details: chesterbeatty.ie/exhibitions/first-fragments/
Acknowledgments: we are grateful to the Chester Beatty for granting us permission to film on location, and especially grateful to Dr Jill Unkel (Curator of Western Collections) for facilitating our visit.

Theories on the Nomina Sacra
started looking at the nomina sacra and early papyus manuscripts. Afraid this one will be a little harder to listen to than most—much easier to watch than to listen, but still hopefully useful and interesting for those who like to dig a little deeper. v

First, I want to give a special thank you to a beloved brother in Yahuwah Yahuwshuwa, Yahuwchanan Robertson, for his efforts and work in making these notes that we went through. He was aware of this great treasure and made it known a few years before I had learned of it, and all credit to him and praise to our Alohim for this gift.
Today we went over what is known as Nomina Sacra (Sacred Names in Latin), and a little history for how, why and by whom the second woe came to be in the world today. Please feel free to ask any questions or share your thoughts on the topic. Shabbat Shalom, and have a wonderful week ahead.

Papyrus 137: A Newly-Published Greek Fragment of The Gospel of Mark (Updated)
An opinion of Doctor Galen Currah, November 2018
wordwatchers.currah.us
New Testament Greek Papyrus 137, published in 2018, apparently comes from a single-column codex having about 25 lines per column, an average of 28 letters per line, and a written area estimated at 9.4 × 12 cm on a size has been estimated at 12.4 × 16.6 cm.
Although the fragment contains only a few words of Mark 1:7-9 and 1:16-17, it helps scholars to confirm several points of interest:
● Copies of the Greek Gospel of Mark were already circulating internationally in the second and third centuries CE.
● In spite of minor transcriptional variations, the text substantiates that presented in better-preserved, fourth-century documents, such as C...

Sacred Names and Their Effect on Bible Translations
Have you ever wondered why you find the name of Jesus or God in your Bible and there's a footnote attached that says, "Other translations say 'he'."? After all, there's no similarity between "God" and "he" is there?
The reason for that difference is an ancient scribal practice known as the Nomina Sacra, or "Sacred Name." In the video, I do my best to give a brief explanation of what these sacred names looked like and how they affect your modern English Bibles.

Papyrus 137: A Newly-Published Greek Fragment of The Gospel of Mark (Updated)

New Testament Greek Papyrus 137, published in 2018, apparently comes from a single-column codex having about 25 lines per column, an average of 28 letters per line, and a written area estimated at 9.4 × 12 cm on a size has been estimated at 12.4 × 16.6 cm.
Although the fragment contains only a few words of Mark 1:7-9 and 1:16-17, it helps scholars to confirm several points of interest:
● Copies of the Greek Gospel of Mark were already circulating internationally in the second and third centuries CE.
● In spite of minor transcriptional variations, the text substantiates that presented in better-preserved, fourth-century documents, such as Codex Sinaiticus.
● By the third century CE, New Testament scribes had begun employing abbreviations for sacred names (nomena sacra).
● The Holy Spirit was already considered a divine Person whose title is abbreviated as a nomen sacrum.
Just as all authentic biblical manuscripts have proven subject to copyists’ errors, so, too, this tiny scrap of Scripture contains some textual variants that help scholars to reconstruct the original wording of Mark’s Gospel. To wit:
● The title Holy Spirit at verse 8 is shortened from πνευματι to π̣̅ν̣̅ι as a nomen sacrum (divine name).
● The preposition εν ('in') is found neither before “water” nor before “Holy Spirit,” which terms occur in the dative case having the same function as εν.
● The name Jesus is omitted, although the verbs occur in their third person singular form, referring to Jesus in the preceding verses.
