Life of a Swazi Student (documentary trailer)
In 2013 Swaziland's Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Swaziland) hosted two interns from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. The two interns, Phesheya Ian Kunene and Bhekilanga Wakhile Kunene, created a short documentary about university life in Swaziland. Phesheya and Bhekilanga interviewed four current students, one former student, a lecturer, and the former minister for labour and social security. With assistance from MISA-Swaziland, the interns filmed, edited and produced the final documentary. The purpose of the documentary, said Bhekilanga, is to "give a voice to students, to hear their side of the story. What is it like being a student? Are they ready for life after university? What causes students to strike and boycott classes? What are the good things happening at university?" These are some of the questions raised in the film. This trailer, which was launched at Limkokwing University in Swaziland in December 2013, runs for 15 minutes. The full documentary runs for 50 minutes and will be uploaded to YouTube shortly. Swaziland King Chooses New Virgin Bride As 15th Wife
Swaziland's King Mswati III has chosen an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant as his 15th wife, a palace spokesman said Tuesday, days before a much-criticised parliamentary vote. "I can confirm that the king has introduced to the nation a new liphovela (royal fiancee)," said Ludzidzini palace governor Timothy Mtetwa. Mswati, a 45-year-old who is sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch, introduced Sindiswa Dlamini at a Reed Dance celebration over the weekend, Mtetwa told AFP. She wore red feathers on her head — a sign of royalty. The young woman graduated from Mbabane's St. Francis High School last year and is a finalist in the Miss Cultural Heritage beauty pageant. The winner will be announced on September 28. The king has come under fire for his household's lavish lifestyle while the tiny mountain kingdom's 1.2 million people struggle to make a living. Mswati reportedly has a personal fortune of around $200 million (152 euros) and the UN estimates that 70 percent of his 1.2 million subjects live below the poverty line. He has steadfastly resisted reforms. The new engagement was announced at a festival which also counted regional delegates who will observe parliamentary elections on Friday. Critics have slammed the polls as a sham, partly because political parties are banned and candidates are hand-picked by traditional leaders. The weekend's celebrations were a smaller repeat of last month's official annual Reed Dance, where young virgins from across the kingdom gather and dance for the king. "It just happened that the international community was there to witness the event," said Mtetwa. The wedding only takes place once the fiancee falls pregnant. Dlamini will then become Mswati's 14th wife. The monarch's colourful private life is off-limits in local media, but has drawn a lot of international interest. Three wives left the household in recent years. The latest, Queen LaGija, fled the palace in 2012 claiming years of physical and emotional abuse. Another queen, LaDube, was reportedly abused after she was caught in bed with the justice minister, a close friend of the king. Mswati had kidnapped and married the queen when she was 16 in 2005.- published: 22 Sep 2013

War in the Central African Republic (Full Length Documentary)
War in the Central African Republic (Full Length Documentary)
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent. In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks. Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive. CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians. "Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement. The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled. Congrats to Vladimir Putin. Your voting tampering has succeeded. Its not so crazy that Crimea voted to join Russia. It's much easier to make the right vote when you have a Russian soldier standing above you wielding an AK-47. For some people that's scary. For Putin that's democracy in action. There are only a few more weeks to get healthcare. The Obamacare website is working and business is flowing. Obama is talking to anyone who will listen to make sure you sign up. Obama talked to Ryan Seacrest and Zach Galifianakis on his show Between Two Ferns last week. Because nothing says healthcare like the hollywood bourgeoisie! Colorado is rolling in the dough ever since they legalized marijuana. Millions of dollars have been earned, pizza parlors around the state are recording record profits and some enterprising girl scouts have raised a ton of money by selling cookies right outside dispensaries! With legalization over time looking more and more likely. I think a lot of Americans are going to come down with a mean case of "anxiety". What do you think about this week's quickie news? Bangkok Rising - Is Thailand on the Brink of Civil War?
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News For almost a decade, Thailand has been trapped in a bloody conflict between supporters and opponents of the tycoon-turned-politician, Thaksin Shinawatra. During his time as prime minister, Thaksin improved life for the poor and the working class, while his autocratic tendencies and crony capitalism led his opponents, mainly made up of royalists and the middle class, to rise up. Thaksin was ousted in a military coup in 2006 for alleged abuse of power and corruption. Since then Thaksin's opponents — widely known as the Yellow Shirts — and his avid supporters, the Red Shirts, have taken turns instigating mass protests to topple their opponents. While attempting to clear her brother's name of corruption charges in November 2013, Thaksin's sister and Thailand's current PM Yingluck Shinawatra triggered a new Yellow Shirt uprising that has so far killed a reported 23 people and injured hundreds. Yingluck Shinawatra tried to diffuse the protests by dissolving Thailand's parliament and calling for new elections. But the Yellows, determined to overthrow her, began a shutdown of Bangkok on January 13th, bringing the capital to a standstill. Since the election was annulled on March 31st, Red Shirts are mobilizing and intensifying their threats of starting a civil war. VICE News was on the ground to capture Thailand's state of emergency as the long running battle for Thailand is coming to a head. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News As the conflict in Thailand intensifies, VICE News goes deep into the lives of the rich and powerful royalists of Bangkok, who are fighting to keep the old order from crumbling. These Bangkok elite have long aligned themselves with the most potent symbol of Thai unity — King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest ruling current monarch. The royalists' fanatical devotion to the king has long assured them the unquestionable claim to represent the country. But that's changing rapidly, and the country's political climate is inspiring PDRC leaders Nat and Victor, two young, Ferrari-driving multi-millionaires, out to the streets — and into a violent and unpredictable future. Egypt Under Sisi
Egypt Under Sisi
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Three years ago, millions of Egyptians took to the streets in protest against then-president Hosni Mubarak. The people's revolution was successful in its initial aim, ousting the leader from his post after an almost 30-year rule, and paved the way for the country's first ever democratic election. However, one year after Muslim Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi came to power, tens of thousands of Egyptians once again began pouring into Cairo's Tahrir Square to demand that their first democratically elected president step down from office. After over seven months of demonstrations, the army announced the end of Morsi's presidency in what has since been labelled a coup. The military-led interim government haven't been able to bring peace to the country. Various factions have remained on the streets, fighting for their own specific causes. Some are pro-Muslim Brotherhood, while others are members of groups like the April 6 Youth Movement, who are opposed to Mubarak, Morsi and the current military leaders. Then there are the military supporters, who are calling for Head General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to run for president. Meanwhile, Egypt's interim leader, Adly Mansour along with General Sisi, has cracked down on any form of public dissent, labelling opposition groups as terrorists and restricting protests. Hundreds of activists and oppositionists have been killed in clashes with security forces, and thousands more have been arrested. As Egypt finds itself more fractured than ever and slowly falling back into an autocratic rule, VICE News spent time on the streets of Cairo in the build-up to the third anniversary of the Egyptian revolution, investigating the army and interim government's efforts to crack down on dissent.
