The Prime Minister of Pakistan has demanded to know why police apparently stood and watched a pregnant woman be beaten and stoned to death by her family for marrying the man she loved without intervening in the brutal attack.

Farzana Parveen, 25, died on Tuesday after members of her family attacked her and her husband with sticks and bricks in broad daylight in front of Lahore\'s High Court.

Nawaz Sharif has since asked to know why police did nothing, despite the killing taking place outside of one of the country\'s top courts, according to his spokesman.

Taliban is meeting out summary executions in areas under their influence. This, according to a new exclusive footage shown on Dubai-based pan-Arab satellite channel Al Aan TV.
A grainy, three and a half minutes clip shows the stoning to death of a woman by a group of Taliban.
The clip appeared in one of Alaan\'s weekly programs (AKTHAR MIN ENWAN) which discussed the implementation of religion for political ends by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
It is the first time ever that a stoning by TTP is captured on tape in Pakistan.
The video was shot recently in Upper Orakzai in Northwest Pakistan by the Taliban itself. It is a rare visual proof of ruthless methods used by Taliban in Pakistan as well as Afghanistan.
The show hosted as well Pakistani cleric Sahibzada Fazl Karim, a member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP). \

According to a new global analysis, almost a third of the world is now fat, and no country has been able to curb obesity rates in the last three decades.
Researchers found more than 2 billion people worldwide are now overweight or obese. The highest rates were in the Middle East and North Africa, where nearly 60 percent of men and 65 percent of women are heavy. The U.S. has about 13 percent of the world\'s fat population, a greater percentage than any other country. China and India combined have about 15 percent.

The Ukrainian elections are Sunday, and there\'s still uncertainty that they will actually take place in eastern Ukraine. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels around the eastern part of the country to gauge the vibe before election day.

He interviews Ukraine\'s Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov about plans to make sure everything goes smoothly in Donetsk and Luhansk — areas which have a heavy presence of pro-Russia forces. He then visits a polling station in Donetsk where nearby a Ukrainian checkpoint was attacked a few hours earlier resulting in at least 11 deaths, and meets up with the Donbas Battalion, who are working to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the elections. Despite the measures that are being taken by Ukrainian troops and officials, it\'s still unclear what tomorrow will bring.

Details of the "gist" of talks ahead of the Iraq war between Tony Blair and George Bush are to be published, the UK's Chilcot inquiry says. Britain's top civil servant Sir Jeremy Heywood has agreed the principles of handing over extracts and quotes. However the full documents or transcripts of talks will not be released. The report is thought to have been delayed by protracted wrangling over what could be published. In a letter, inquiry chairman Sir John Chilcot said "detailed consideration" of what to release was taking place. He says it has reached agreement on the "principles that will underpin disclosure" of communications between former US President George Bush and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. The documents include 25 notes from Mr Blair to Mr Bush and more than 130 records of conversations between the former prime minister and then US president in the run up to war.

Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan sign 'epoch' Eurasian Economic Union
Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan sign 'epoch' Eurasian Economic Union
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:31
  • Updated: 30 May 2014
Back in POWER! | Putin's New 'Soviet Union' | May 29, 2014 RT. Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan signed the historic Eurasian Economic Union which will come into effect in January 2015. Cutting down trade barriers and comprising over 170 million people it will be the largest common market in the ex-Soviet sphere. "The just-signed treaty is of epoch-making, historic importance," Russian President Vladimir Putin said. The troika of countries will cooperate in energy, industry, agriculture, and transport. "In fact, we are shaping the largest common market in the CIS, with huge production, scientific and technological potential and enormous natural resources," the President added. Citizens of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan will have the right to work freely throughout the member states without having to be issued any special work permits, Putin said. Over the last three years, trade within the Customs Union has increased by $23 billion, or nearly 50 percent. At the end of 2013, it stood at $66.2 billion. Belarus and Kazakhstan are in third place in foreign trade with the Russian Federation, after the EU and China, Putin said. The Russian leader said that the document brings Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus to a new level of integration yes lets each individual state fully retain its sovereignty. "We ensure a close and coherent economic collaboration and cooperation. Today we have created a powerful and attractive center of economic development, a large regional market that brings together more than 170 people. Our union has huge reserves of natural resources, including energy, which accounts for one fifth of the world's gas reserves and 15 percent of oil reserves," Putin said. "A new geopolitical reality of the 21st century is born," Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said shortly after the final treaty was signed by the three leaders. "We see this as an open space and a new bridge between the growing economies of Europe and Asia," Nazarbayev added. David Gray, head of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Russia, said he hoped improving trade will help boost investment, as in the EU. "If you look at the EU, for example, the reduction of trade barriers within the EU had a significant impact in terms of doing business, which does encourage investment. And I'm looking forward to similar results in terms of the Eurasia deal," Gray said while speaking to RT at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum on May 24. However, Kazakh President Nazarbayev warned members to try and avoid repeating the mistakes of the European Union, which is still facing grave economic consequences from the continent-wide recession. "The point is that none of the participating countries were subject to de-industrialization, and traditional industries did not suffer. Lessons from the European recession are in this," Nazarbayev said. Belarusian President Lukashenko hailed the signing, but said there was still major work to be done in areas of bilateral trade. "We believe the Economic Union will be the foundation for the future of political, military, and humanitarian unity," he said. The Customs Union is a project to gather ex-Soviet states into a free trade zone to rival the European Union. The three member states of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan only comprise 2.5 percent to the Earth's population, but account for 15 percent of the total land. "The geographical position permits us to create transport, logistic routes of not only regional, but also global importance that permits attracting massive trade flows in Europe and Asia," Putin said ahead of the signing ceremony in Astana, Kazakhstan on Thursday. All member states will retain full state sovereignty. Russia is financing the lion's share of the administration, but each state will have a one-third voting status. "The Eurasian Economic Union will operate on universal transparent principles understood by all, including standards and principles of the WTO," Putin said. The idea of creating a regional trading bloc was first suggested by President Nursultan Nazabayev of Kazakhstan back in 1994, when he gave a speech at Moscow State University. The Customs Union began on January 1, 2010, and started operating under a comprehensive customs code in July 2011. Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) like Armenia, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan may be brought into the free trade zone later. Kyrgyzstan plans to join the Customs Union by the end of 2014, President Almazbek Atambayev said at the meeting. A decision on Armenia's membership will have to be made by July 2014, Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazabayev said.

Today in Islam: Pregnant Farzana Parveen stoned to death by her own family in Pakistan

The Prime Minister of Pakistan has demanded to know why police apparently stood and watched a pregnant woman be beaten and stoned to death by her family for marrying the man she loved without intervening in the brutal attack. Farzana Parveen, 25, died on Tuesday after members of her family attacked her and her husband with sticks and bricks in broad daylight in front of Lahore's High Court. Nawaz Sharif has since asked to know why police did nothing, despite the killing taking place outside of one of the country's top courts, according to his spokesman. Mr Sharif had taken notice of the "brutal killing" in the presence of police, his press office said in a statement, adding that a "totally unacceptable" crime had to be dealt with promptly by law. "I am directing the chief minister to take immediate action and a report must be submitted by this evening to my office," it quoted Mr Sharif as saying. Her husband Mohammad Iqbal told the BBC: "We were shouting for help [but] nobody listened. "One of my relatives took off his clothes to capture police attention but they didn't intervene. They watched Farzana being killed and did nothing." He said the couple "loved each other" and had married against her families wishes on 7 January. "We were going to the court with our lawyer Mustafa Kharal, and we were near the court when three dozen people suddenly attacked us," he explained. "I saw a young woman from my wife's family slapping her. Some people were also beating me... I tried to save my wife's life, but I failed," he said. Muhammad Aurangzeb, a son of her previous husband claimed Ms Parveen was actually five month pregnant, following reports she was three months into her pregnancy. "Her baby died in her womb," he told Reuters. Ms Parveen had been engaged to her cousin but married Me Iqbal instead, police said. Her family had registered a kidnapping case against him but she had come to court to argue that she had married of her own free will.

Taliban is meeting out summary executions in areas under their influence. This, according to a new exclusive footage shown on Dubai-based pan-Arab satellite channel Al Aan TV. A grainy, three and a half minutes clip shows the stoning to death of a woman by a group of Taliban. The clip appeared in one of Alaan's weekly programs (AKTHAR MIN ENWAN) which discussed the implementation of religion for political ends by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). "We do not agree with Taliban, or any other groups or individuals who issue such religious judgments," Mr. Karim added, "This can only be decided by qualified people after the suspect undergoes legal religious trials with legal witnesses." Speaking about the complexity of applying stoning to a suspect, Mr. Karim explains that any doubt will lead to the immediate termination of such punishment. Pakistani women and men are frequently targeted by groups of Taliban who roam around parts of tribal area. Proper courts are non-existing; lawyers are unheard of while especially women seem to be randomly charged by violent, ultra conservative local commanders. Al Aan showed too a clip in which an unarmed woman is shot from the back by Taliban. This also happened in Upper Orakzai. In most cases women are charged by the Taliban with crimes against morality. Often these charges are issued by Taliban clerics who were appointed by TTP's commanders. Alaan TV spoke to ordinary Pakistani civilians in the streets of Islamabad who in general reject such practices. "Killing a human being is not permissible under any reason or religion," said one Pakistani. Other Pakistani citizens speaking to Al Aan expressed concern that what Taliban is doing is not only harming the international image of the country but it is also giving Muslims a wholly undeserved bad name across the world. About Al Aan TV Al Aan is a pan-Arab satellite broadcaster based in Dubai Media City, available free-to-air on Arabsat or Nilesat. As a broadcaster AL Aan offers original programming presented in an innovative infotainment format. The channel's aim is to educate as well as entertain while addressing the needs and aspirations of a young, dynamic and modern Arab woman, to whom the Channel is a friend and a guide that broads her horizon and helps her plan her life and her choices and get the best for her family. Mursi himself was then overthrown by the army in July 2013. Euronews visited the Imbaba neighbourhood in Cairo and found residents hoping that their lives would improve after the vote. "We only want a dignified life, to feel secure," one man said. Another told euronews: "We ask any incoming president to ... The U.S. has about 13 percent of the world's fat population, a greater percentage than any other country. China and India combined have about 15 percent. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305/Article_2014-05-28-EU-MED-Fat-World/id-5e94f0f0788e422590c94fbfdc298b9b http://www.wochit.com

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Ukrainian elections are Sunday, and there's still uncertainty that they will actually take place in eastern Ukraine. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels around the eastern part of the country to gauge the vibe before election day. He interviews Ukraine's Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov about plans to make sure everything goes smoothly in Donetsk and Luhansk — areas which have a heavy presence of pro-Russia forces. He then visits a polling station in Donetsk where nearby a Ukrainian checkpoint was attacked a few hours earlier resulting in at least 11 deaths, and meets up with the Donbas Battalion, who are working to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the elections. Despite the measures that are being taken by Ukrainian troops and officials, it's still unclear what tomorrow will bring.
