After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tatars trickled back into Crimea, but their status there was always temporary. With Crimea's much-disputed status as part of Russia following the referendum, the future of the Tatars is a big question mark. VICE News' Simon Ostrovsky spent some time with Tatars in Simferopol in the week leading up to the referendum to get their side of the story. On May 18, 1944, Joseph Stalin deported 218,000 Crimean Tatars to Central Asia. Using personal testimonies, this film tells the story of the Tatars' expulsion from their homeland and their long struggle to return. It was only in 1989, with the opening up of the Soviet Union, that they were able to come back in large numbers. Most, finding Russians living in their former homes, built shacks in which to live. Today, 300,000 Tatars live in Crimea - 5,000 of them still in shacks. Even those with houses suffer because they only have minority status. Despite this, 150,000 more are still hoping to return home.

Haytarma tells the story of the May 18, 1944, deportation through the life of Amet Khan Sultan, a fighter pilot twice named Hero of the Soviet Union. He was stationed in Crimea at the time of the deportation, and had been granted leave to visit his family in Alupka at the time the deportation started. For the first time in the history of Crimean Tatar nation, a full length feature film was released depicting the story of Tatar people in Crimea, inclusive of the deportation and resettlement imposed on them by the Soviet Union in 1944. "Haytarma"(Return), the title of this film, was directed by Akhtem Seytabla in Crimea, Ukraine . It is meant to be an accurate representation of the depth of the tragedy and gives insight to the severity of the impact it had on Tatar people through the life story of Amet-Han Sultan, a real life legendary Crimean Tatar fighter recognized as a hero of the Soviet Union and a frightening enemy of the Nazi air force. Understandably, "Haytarma" was quite difficult to shoot emotionally as it is still a haunting memory to millions of Crimean Tatars who endured the unspeakable horrors of the deportation and forced resettlement. The director encouraged actual Crimean Tatar natives to participate as extras in crowd scenes, but shooting this film was so grueling that 17 of the extras were overwhelmed and immediately delivered to a hospital. ATR TV, the first Crimean Tatar independent channel is a key supporter of this process and has helped sponsor the production of this motion picture. The purpose of creating "Haytarma" is to allow everyone to understand the anguish, fear, oppression, terror, and torment that Crimean Tatar people have faced. The film has aroused deep emotions and been at the center of controversy since its release. Many Crimean Tatars reported being deeply moved by the film, which put parents' and grandparents' stories into visual format. Russian generals who had been trained by Amet Khan Sultan were also invited to the premier. SOUNDBITE 3 (Russian): "The Muslims only fear one thing, God. Everything that happens on Earth is in accordance with him. Therefore if this referendum takes place, it's God's will." Crimean Tatars gathered Friday for prayers on Islam's holy day, with many voicing fears for the future ahead of a referendum Sunday expected to lead to closer ties with Moscow. At the main mosque in Bakhchysaray, the biggest Tatar settlement in Crimea, the Muslim ethnic group was urged to resist "provocations" ahead of a planned anti-referendum protest later on the outskirts of town. A similar demonstration was planned on Friday in Simferopol, the capital of Crimea, under the slogan "No to the illegal referendum!" -- following a decision by the Medzhlis, the Tatar parliament. A handful of trucks containing Russian forces were stationed on Bakhchysaray's main road out of the town on Friday morning. The Tatars, who are set to boycott Sunday's vote, are native to Crimea and were once the main ethnic on the peninsula but were deported en masse by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin during World War II. They only started returning after the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s and currently make up some 12 percent of Crimea's mostly Russian-speaking population of two million people. Speaking outside the 16th century Big Khan mosque, Haji Rasim Islam Settar Ogoli said he was praying for stability. "Only Allah knows what will happen -- we just want there to be peace," the 79-year-old said. "Ukrainians, Tatars, Russians are brothers here. We already saw a lot of things because we are old and we want to live in peace." Rasim, 83, said he felt unsafe due to the presence of Russian forces around the town. "How can you feel with armed people around? You don't expect something good," he added. "We're surrounded by the army so what can we do about it?" The mosque's imam declined to speak to reporters, citing safety fears, but people speaking after prayers said he had urged them to remain peaceful. "He said to look out for provocations and take care of our families," said Hasan, 26. "We were told not to follow provocations because this referendum is illegal." Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev urged NATO to intervene in Crimea to avert a "massacre" and called on the Tatars to boycott the upcoming referendum in an interview on Thursday. "If other measures do not work, then NATO should intervene like in Kosovo," Dzhemilev said in a phone interview from Brussels, where he was due to meet NATO's deputy secretary general Alexander Vershbow later on Friday. NATO intervention "usually only happens when there is a massacre, we want it to happen before there is a massacre," said Dzhemilev, currently a lawmaker in Kiev who spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call earlier this week. "I told him that we would not wage war against Russia but that we would struggle for the territorial integrity of our country," he said. Dzhemilev also criticised inaction in the West, saying: "We haven't seen any serious steps from the West". In Bakhchysaray, the old Tatar capital of Crimea, a van blasting out a pro-Russian song and emblazoned with a slogan urging people to vote for "peace and prosperity" in the referendum drove past the mosque shortly before prayers began.

The protest in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea's capital was organised by the social-political organisation 'The Majilis of the Crimean Tatar People' in response to Andreev's comments that a film about the deportation of Crimean Tatars during World War II is historically inaccurate. During an interview on Crimean TVl, the Consul-General said that in his opinion the newly released film 'Haytarama' distorts historical facts. The Crimean region commemorated Deportation Memorial Day on May 18, the official remembrance date of the 1944 forced mass deportation of Crimean Tartars. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin expelled the Crimean Tartar population to areas in the Urals, Siberia and Central Asia, accusing them of being collaborators with Nazi-Germany during World War II. Between 20 and 46 % of the Crimean Tatar population is estimated to have died after the deportation programme began. Crimea was granted status as an autonomous republic within Ukrainian borders on February 12, 1991, less than one year after the assertion of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic's state sovereignty in July 1990. As of 2009, the Ukrainian government estimated that some 265,000 Crimean Tatars have resettled in Ukraine following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Resettlement of Crimean Tatars has seen tensions arise following large influxes of people returning to land since occupied by other ethnic groups. In response to the protests outside the consulate, Andreev said in an interview: "Obviously I do not intended to communicate with these people in this tone and manner. A propaganda battle is also being played out, with Ukrainian news channels reportedly taken off air or replaced by Russian programming. But residents who want Crimea to remain part of Ukraine have tried to make their voices heard in spite of the Kremlin's scare tactics. Taras Onoprienko, pro-Ukraine demonstrator: "Actually I work in both Crimea and Ukraine. I work in all the regions of Ukraine. I'll try to find the ways to sort out this issue. Why would I need all the bureaucracy and the documentation that might arise and, vice versa. It would be better if all this were simple. Independence, who needs it?" Anxiety is also high amongst Tatars, who say they will not take up arms but worry about what might happen if Russia annexes Crimea. Mussa Emir-Ussiinuvda, local Muslim Tatar: "People understand that either they go to the referendum or not. Everything is decided. If it is taking place down the barrel of a gun, everything is decided. Either we express our opinion or not, there will be no difference. The opinion that is considered to be the majority should be without threat and aggression." Russia has promised safety to all of the region's ethnic minorities. But memories are still fresh of 1944, when Soviet dictator Josef Stalin deported the entire Crimean Tatar population to Central Asia.
