Belgium Strike Namur 2012 News
Tourism in the southern Belgian city of Namur took a beating when Belgian railway workers staged a one-day strike on Tuesday. The 24-hour strike which began at about 1000 local time 2000 GMT on Tuesday was called by the trade unions in protest against a government proposal to consolidate the current three railway companies into two. Namur a popular travel destination in Belgium was hosting the week-long International French-Language Film Festival FIFF when rail workers went on strike. Among the most affected local taxi drivers said they had hoped to make more money during the film festival. Our business was good yesterday. Many people came here to watch movies. Business was a lot better yesterday. Today it is not good said a local taxi driver. Journalists covering the film festival were also affected. Many were stranded in the city as the strike had paralyzed the rail network across the country. The festival organizer had to arrange shuttle buses to send reporters back to Brussels for coaches or air flights still in service. You can go with the Namur official car so they can give you a free ride to Brussels because there is a strike here said Viau Alexandra a journalist covering the film festival. The festival s organizers said that it was not the worst compared with the strikes staged by Belgian trade unions in January in protest against the government s austerity programs which paralyzed the rail road and low-cost airline networks across the country. At Wen s meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo on Thursday both sides agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation. Since China and Belgium established foreign relations four decades ago the two sides have seen their mutual understanding and trust steadily increasing said Wen. Faced with the international financial crisis he said that the two sides should turn the crisis into an opportunity to further deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and inject fresh vigor into the development of bilateral relations. China attaches great importance to Belgium s influence within the EU and on international affairs said Wen adding that Beijing is ready to work with Brussels to enhance dialogues and coordination on hot-button and global issues. In view of the current unfavorable global economic conditions he said China and Belgium should remain committed to keeping their markets open and jointly resist all forms of protectionism. China welcomes more investment from Belgian enterprises and hopes that Belgium will continue facilitating Chinese businesses exploration in the Belgian market Wen said. The two countries need to step up financial cooperation so as to provide better financial services for their companies. China is willing to learn from Belgium s advanced experiences and ideas Wen said The Chinese premier urged the two sides to promote cooperation and exchanges in high technology energy conservation environmental protection education and culture. Di Rupo said China is a key partner for Belgium and his country admires China s achievements and values China s international status and influence. Belgium he said is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with China and foster a favorable environment for Chinese investors. He also agreed that the two countries should expand cooperation in high technology energy conservation and environmental protection and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges. In afternoon Wen addressed the 8th China-EU Business Summit which was attended by President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso. The China-EU relationship is among the most important ones in the world and is also a strategic priority of China s foreign policy said the Chinese premier. He said as the most fruitful part of the China-EU relationship two-way trade reached 567.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2011 representing an average annual increase of 20.8 percent since 2003. The EU has been China s top trading partner for eight consecutive years while China- published: 31 Oct 2013

Belgian PM hands in cabinet resignation after poll defeat
Belgium's Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo handed his government's resignation to King Philip on Monday following general elections at the weekend that saw his Socialist party suffer a narrow defeat to the Flemish separatist party N-VA. "The king accepted the resignation and asked the government to continue in a caretaker capacity," a statement from Di Rupo's office said. N-VA won 32 percent of Sunday's ballot, making it the largest party both in its Flanders heartland and the country as a whole. The Socialists garnered 30 percent of the vote. King Philip will now begin consultations with political leaders to see who can form a new government, of necessity a coalition, in a country sharply divided into the Flemish-speaking north and the French south. In 2010, N-VA leader Bart De Wever balked at cooperating with the Socialists, contributing to a stalemate which handed Belgium the world record for the number of days -- 541 -- it took to form a new government. The political bickering over constitutional changes to give Flanders more autonomy unsettled European financial markets. Please subscribe to our channel.. Flemish Separatists Set for Victory in Key Belgium Election
Flemish Separatists Set for Victory in Key Belgium Election
Brussels: Belgium's controversial Flemish separatists looked set to take the lead in a general election yesterday marred by an attack against the Jewish Museum in Brussels, the first such incident in 30 years. First estimates gave 33 per cent of the vote in Flanders to the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) headed by tough-talking Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever. With Flanders in the north accounting for 60 percent of Belgium's population of 11 million, the result, if confirmed, would see the NV-A become the biggest party in the language-divided nation. "Vicit vim virtus", De Wever told supporters in Latin -- meaning "Courage overcame violence". The French-speaking Socialists from southern Wallonia, headed by incumbent premier Elio Di Rupo, scored just over 30 per cent. However, De Wever's lead may prove to be too small to enable him to form a regional government in northern Flanders, while at the federal level he may find it difficult to find allies to join a coalition. Belgium has no national political parties, with the current federal coalition government made up of groups from both sides of its invisible but very real linguistic border. According to tradition, it will be up to King Philip to ask the leader of today's winning party to form a government. It will his first election as king, having come to the throne only last year. A debate on changing the law to allow euthanasia for minors has deeply divided the country. Doctor van Berlaer is a pediatric oncologist, one of 16 pediatricians who has written an open letter to the Belgian parliament asking to legalise euthanasia for patients under the age of 18. Only Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg allow euthanasia, or choosing the right to die because of unbearable suffering. But opponents question whether children are capable of deciding to end their own lives. Gerlant van Berlaer a paediatric oncologist, at Ziekenhuis University believes otherwise: "Most of the time they're afraid that we'll just go walking through the hospitals and killing children. Of course this is nonsense. We as doctors and parents will always want to do the maximum we can to care and to cure a child. But in some very rare situations there is really nothing we can do anymore and this might mean that a child will have to suffer until death will come along and there's no legal way of helping these patients in an ultimate act of humanity." The extended euthanasia law currently being debated does not specify a minimum age. But doctors who witness the daily suffering of their young patients argue these children are mature beyond their years. A suffering that affects the whole family and one which has made it difficult to get either parents or patients to talk about euthanasia openly. Ella-Louise Van Rooy was six months old when she was diagnosed with an uncurable genetic disease. She died four months later. Her mother, Linda says watching her daughter suffer in the last days of her life was unbearable. She knows that extending the euthanasia bill for minors does not include situations such as Ella Louise's. But she hopes that one day this will be possible. For her, there is no minimum age when it comes to suffering: "The last four or five days of Ella Louise, that's what we felt, there was no quality, there was no dignity to her, not to her life. The only thing that happened to her was she was getting skinnier because she was like eating all her body reserves. She was getting very skinny, she was in pain again. It made me angry. " However, René Stockman, a senior member of the religious order Brothers of Charity which runs hospices, says that while suffering can be unbearable, for him it's more about finding a sense in life rather than ending it: "We see people coming in with that clear request 'stop my life, I cannot survive anymore in this situation'. They choose nevertheless for palliative care and after a few days we see that the question to die is not posed anymore because they receive again a sense in their life. It's all about sense in their life." For supporters of euthanasia, the purpose is to be able to decide to end one's life in a dignified and humanitarian way. But also in a legal and safe way. Yet while the current debate is about extending this right to minors, it has also ignited an older debate - how does the medical profession decide when the suffering is too much?
