U.S. airstrike in Somalia targets suspected militant leader For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to http://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS The U.S. military conducted an airstrike in southern Somalia on Sunday against a suspected militant leader, a U.S. military official told CNN. The target was described by the official as a "senior leader" affiliated with al Qaeda and Al-Shabaab, al Qaeda's affiliate in Somalia. The United States has not yet been able to determine whether the target was killed, the official said. Last October, the elite U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six aborted a pre-dawn raid in southern Somalia to capture Al-Shabaab leader Ikrima after an intense firefight prevented them from reliably taking him alive, a senior U.S. official told CNN at the time. In a second raid that same weekend, members of the U.S. Army Delta Force captured Abu Anas al Libi, an al Qaeda operative wanted for his alleged role in the deadly 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa, during an operation in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The U.S. military official said Sunday's strike involved missiles. No U.S. troops were on the ground. Al-Shabaab, designated a terrorist organization by the United States, has a relationship with al Qaeda that goes back several years. In 2012, the two groups effectively merged, said CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen. Al-Shabaab hopes to turn Somalia into a fundamentalist Islamic state but has launched attacks in other countries as well. In 2010, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for two suicide bombings in Kampala, Uganda, amid crowds of soccer fans watching televised screenings of the World Cup final. The bombings left 74 people dead. The group said at the time the attacks were retaliation for Ugandan participation in the African Union Mission in Somalia, known as AMISOM. One AMISOM goal is to support Somali government forces in cracking down on Al-Shabaab. Al-Shabaab has also mounted many smaller attacks against targets in Kenya, hurling hand grenades into nightclubs, restaurants and schools. The group has also kidnapped tourists and aid workers. The group claimed responsibility for the September siege of the Westgate mall in Nairobi on September 21 that killed at least 67 people. Al-Shabaab said the attack was retaliation for Kenya's involvement in the African Union effort against the group. In recent months, Al-Shabaab's haven in south-central Somalia has been increasingly squeezed as Kenyan forces fight the group from the south and African Union forces come down from Mogadishu, the Somali capital. In an interview with US broadcaster Voice of America, Abdilahi Yusuf Abdi said "Allah had saved" his son. The 16-year-old survived lack of oxygen and freezing temperatures on a five-hour flight from California to Hawaii. Mr Abdi said his son, Yahya Abdi, would return to California after he finished health checks in Hawaii. The teenager jumped over a fence at San Jose airport to get to the plane. He reportedly told investigators he had been in an argument at home and then went to the airport, choosing the aircraft nearest to the fence, according to local media. Dr Neil Spratt, senior lecturer in neurology at the University of Newcastle, Australia, told the BBC the young man would have likely not survived the lack of oxygen if he had not been exposed to such cold temperatures. "We know that cold can protect the brain and other organs and it is used for that in various medical situations," Dr Spratt said. A spokesman for Hawaiian Airlines said airline staff noticed the disorientated boy on the tarmac after the plane landed in Maui on Sunday morning. He was questioned by the FBI and given a medical screening and was said to be in a stable condition. A spokeswoman for Hawaiian Airlines said the boy was "exceptionally lucky to have survived". Somalia diverting arms to al-Shabab, UN report claims For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS A UN report has warned that "systematic abuses" by Somalia's government have allowed weapons to be diverted to warlords and al Shabab militants. The report for the UN's sanctions committee calls for the restoration of an arms embargo on Somalia that was relaxed last year. It said a key advisor to Somalia's president has been involved in planning weapons deliveries to militants. Somalia's mission to the UN has questioned the report's validity. The confidential 14-page report was compiled by the UN's Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group, a panel of independent experts supervising compliance with the sanctions regime. It said the group had "identified a number of issues and concerns over current management of weapons and ammunition stockpiles" by Somalia's government. These, it said, "point to high-level and systematic abuses in weapons and ammunition management and distribution". The Security Council imposed the embargo on Somalia in 1992 as the country descended into two decades of unrest. Information gaps As stability returned to Somalia in 2012, it was hoped that last year's easing of sanctions on light weapons such as assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades would enable an internationally-backed government to better arm its security forces against al-Shabab. Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack on Thursday near the international airport in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. At least six people were killed. The new report outlines the difficulties faced by the monitors in gaining access to weapons stockpiles in Somalia and obtaining information about its growing arsenal. It said shipments of weapons from Uganda and Djibouti could not be accounted for. Many weapons were being diverted away from security forces and into the hands of militias loyal to powerful clans or for sale in private arms markets in Mogadishu, it added. Within these clans, one key adviser to the president has been involved in planning weapons deliveries to al-Shabab, the report said. "Given the gaps in information... it is impossible to quantify what the scale of diversion of weapons stocks has been," it said. "However, the Monitoring Group has obtained other pieces of qualitative evidence that point towards systematic abuses by the (Somali army)." It recommend the restoration of the full arms embargo, or at least stricter rules. The Somali mission to the UN said the report contained "very serious allegations" which will "cause damage to the legitimacy of the government." Most of them were government soldiers. At least 10 other people were injured in the blast after a minivan packed with explosives crashed into a restaurant and blew up, sending flames and black smoke into the air. Al-Shabaab rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, which spokesman Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu Musab said killed 15 security force members. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, Aden said. The restaurant is popular with Somali security forces. Last week, militants carried out a deadly attack on Somalia's presidential palace, exploding a bomb and then opening fire. At least 12 died, including two government officials and seven Al-Shabaab attackers, but President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was unharmed. Bombings have rattled Mogadishu in regular intervals this year, and Al-Shabaab has regularly taken responsibility for them. The group, which the United States has designated as a terrorist organization, hopes to turn Somalia into a fundamentalist Islamic state by force. It also has launched attacks in other countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, that have killed dozens. Somalia unrest: Deadly blast in Mogadishu
At least six people have been killed in a bomb explosion in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Islamist militant group al-Shabab said it carried out the attack, targeting the vehicle of a prominent former government official, who was killed. The number of attacks in Mogadishu has increased in recent months. Many have been blamed on al-Shabab, which has lost ground to government forces in recent years but still controls many southern rural areas. The blast took place near the city centre's "Kilometre 4" district, close to the Turkish embassy. It was unclear whether the explosives had been attached to the vehicle or placed on the roadside and detonated by remote control. The official who died was named as Abdikafi Hilowle, a former secretary for the city's administration. Al-Shabab's military spokesman, Abdiaziz Abu Musab, told news agencies that the al-Qaeda-linked group had carried out the attack. Policemen and civilians were among the dead, officials said. Somalia has been ravaged by constant warfare since 1991, when Siad Barre was ousted. In recent years, al-Shabab has been driven from most of the major city centres by government forces backed by an African Union mission. Somalia - Nomad Girl
Fatima grows up somewhere in the vast steppe of Somalia. The drought in 2011 and Al Shabab's attacks and pressure caused many nomads to flee their homes and walk for days and weeks through the empty land to arrive at a refugee camp in Mogadishu, Kenya or Ethiopia. Fatima loses almost everything. With only her mother she arrives in Mogadishu in a capital that is destroyed by ongoing civil war. Traumatized as she is she stopped singing when she arrived but things changed...

This is a film we produced for Kindernothilfe (KNH) a German based humanitarian aid and relief organization focusing on the need of children.
www.kindernothilfe.de
While this was a promotional video we tried to focus on one local person that has benefited from the help and assistance KNH provided in Somalia.
Production time was three days in Mogadishu which was extremely short. Though the Islamist leading power Al-Shabab had just left the city a few weeks earlier and foreign aid organizations then got access Mogadishu was in a state of anarchy. Different militia and foreign troops like the African Union tried to control the city. We were one of the first western journalists having access to areas like the Bakara Market that was once linchpin for raw materials like gold and diamonds between Africa and the Arab World. Working closely with a local Somali partner of KNH helped us a lot getting access to different areas. Still for security reasons we could mostly just spend a short amount of time at one place before leaving to another. All the time being surrounded by two pick-up vans loaded with armed security guys made it difficult to get a much wanted natural and authentic atmosphere.
Post Production was done in Africa and Germany. Out of several hours of interview with Fatima (name changed due to security) that we transcripted during the curfew in the early mornings and evenings we built a narrative that was later voiced-over. Initially we wanted to keep the original voice and subtitle the whole story but as it was made for a German audience and because of distraction from the pictures we ended up letting a German production company do the voice-over.

Vestel - Somalia | Making-of
Two packed shooting days in Istanbul on an empty container ship, in a commercial container lot, a helicopter-shoot of a fully loaded container vessel and a shoot with boats out on the sea of Marmara were necessary to cover all the shots we had in mind for our "Somalia" spot. Back home in Stuttgart - and even on set - we used our inhouse motion capture system XSens MVN for the whole movements of our digital pirate doubles and our heroes: the Vestrons.
