"Tylopoda" is a suborder of terrestrial herbivorous even-toed ungulates belonging to the order Artiodactyla. They are found in the wild in their native ranges of South America and Asia, while Australian feral camels are introduced. The group has a long fossil history in North America and Europe. Tylopoda appeared during the Eocene around 46.2 million years ago.
Tylopoda has only one extant family, Camelidae, which includes camels, llamas, guanacos, alpacas and vicuñas. This group was much more diverse in the past, containing a number of extinct families in addition to the ancestors of living camelids .
Tylopoda are not ruminants.
Tylopoda was named by Illiger and considered monophyletic by Matthew . It was treated as an unranked clade by Matthew and as a suborder by Carroll , Ursing et al. and Whistler and Webb . It was assigned to Ruminantia by Matthew ; to Artiodactyla by Flower and Carroll ; to Neoselenodontia by Whistler and Webb ; and to Cetartiodactyla by Ursing et al. and by Agnarsson and May-Collado .
The main problem with circumscription of the Tylopoda is that the extensive fossil record of camel-like mammals has not yet been thoroughly examined from a cladistic standpoint. Tylopoda is a highly distinctive lineage among the artiodactyls, but its exact relationships are somewhat elusive due to the fact that the six living species are all closely related and can be considered "living fossils", the sole surviving lineage of a prehistorically wildly successful radiation. More recent studies suggest that tylopods are not as closely related to ruminants as traditionally believed, expressed in cladogram form as follows:

Lamoids, or llamas , consist of the vicuña , guanaco , Suri alpaca, and Huacaya alpaca , and the domestic llama . Guanacos and vicuñas live in the wild, while alpacas – as well as llamas – exist only as domesticated animals. Although early writers compared llamas to sheep, their similarity to the camel was soon recognized. They were included in the genus "Camelus" along with alpaca in the "Systema Naturae" of Linnaeus. They were, however, separated by Cuvier in 1800 under the name of "lama" along with the guanaco. Alpacas and vicuñas are in genus "Vicugna". The genera "Lama" and "Vicugna" are, with the two species of true camels, the sole existing representatives of a very distinct section of the Artiodactyla or even-toed ungulates, called Tylopoda, or "bump-footed", from the peculiar bumps on the soles of their feet. The Tylopoda consist of a single family, the Camelidae, and shares the order Artiodactyla with the Suina , the Tragulina , the Pecora , and the Whippomorpha . The Tylopoda have more or less affinity to each of the sister taxa, standing in some respects in a middle position between them, sharing some characteristics from each, but in others showing special modifications not found in any of the other taxa.
The 19th-century discoveries of a vast and previously unexpected extinct Paleogene fauna of North America, as interpreted by paleontologists Leidy, Cope, and Marsh, aided understanding of the early history of this family. Llamas were not always confined to South America; abundant llama-like remains were found in Pleistocene deposits in the Rocky Mountains and in Central America. Some of the fossil llamas were much larger than current forms. Some species remained in North America during the last ice ages. North American llamas are categorized as a single extinct genus, "Hemiauchenia". Llama-like animals would have been a common sight 25,000 years ago, in modern-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Missouri, and Florida.

""Lama"" is a genus containing two South American camelids, the wild guanaco and the domesticated llama. This genus is closely allied to the wild vicuña and domesticated alpaca of the genus "Vicugna". Before the Spanish conquest of the Americas, llamas and alpacas were the only domesticated ungulates of the continent. They were kept not only for their value as beasts of burden, but also for their flesh, hides, and wool.
Although they were often compared to sheep by early writers, their affinity to the camel was soon perceived. They were included in the genus "Camelus" in the "Systema Naturae" of Linnaeus. In 1800, Cuvier moved the llama, alpaca, and guanaco to the genus "Lama", and the vicuña to the genus "Vicugna". Later, the alpaca was transferred to "Vicugna". These camelids are, with the two species of true camels, the sole extant representatives of a distinct section of Artiodactyla called Tylopoda, or "hump-footed", from the peculiar bumps on the soles of their feet. This section consists of a single family, the Camelidae, the other sections of the same great division being the Suina or pigs, the Tragulina or chevrotains, and the Pecora or true ruminants, to each of which the Tylopoda have some affinity, standing in some respects in a central position between them, sharing some characters from each, but showing special modifications not found in any of the others.
Discovery of the extinct fauna of the American continent of the Tertiary period, starting with the 19th-century palaeontologists Leidy, Cope, and Marsh, has revealed the early history of this family. Llamas were not always confined to South America; their remains are abundant in the Pleistocene deposits of the Rocky Mountains region, and in Central America; some of these extinct forms were much larger than any now living.

The group excludes whales , although DNA sequence and anatomical data indicate they share a common ancestor, making the group paraphyletic. The phylogenetically accurate group is called Cetartiodactyla .
Of the roughly 220 artiodactyl species, many are of great dietary, economic, and cultural importance to humans.
A further distinguishing feature of the group is the shape of the astragalus , a bone in the ankle joint, which has a double-pulley structure. This gives the foot greater flexibility.
As with many extant mammal groups, even-toed ungulates first appeared during the early Eocene
. In form, they were rather like today's chevrotains: small, short-legged creatures that ate leaves and the soft parts of plants. By the late Eocene , the four modern suborders had already developed: Suina ; Tylopoda ; Ruminantia . Nevertheless, artiodactyls were far from dominant at that time; the odd-toed ungulates were much more successful and far more numerous. Even-toed ungulates survived in niche roles, usually occupying marginal habitats, and presumably at that time they developed their complex digestive systems, which allowed them to survive on lower-grade food.
