Sat, Apr 05 2014 CDT by Reinnier Kaze Yaoundé (AFP) Suspected Boko Haram gunmen seized two Italian priests and a Canadian nun in northern Cameroon overnight Saturday, in the latest kidnapping of Westerners in the remote, insurgency-wracked corner of west Africa. The attack occurred overnight in the small parish of Tchere, which lies about 40 miles (60 kilometres) from the corner of northern Nigeria that serves as a base for the Islamist Boko Haram group. A group of armed men pulled up at the parish shortly before midnight, according to Henri Djonyang, the region's head vicar, information that was confirmed by police. The gunmen ransacked the parish before seizing the priests and nun, according to news reports. The priests were identified as Giampaolo Marta and Gianantonio Allegri and the nun as Gilberte Bussier. One of the two priests taken on Friday night had been in Cameroon for more than six years while the second had arrived around a year ago, the Ansa media agency reported. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Djonyang pointed the finger of blame at Boko Haram, who have carried out several kidnappings in the region over the past year. "They are the ones who did it," he said. - Latest Westerners seized - Kidnappings of Westerners have become common in the remote and sparsely populated region, where borders between countries are porous. In November 2013, French Catholic priest Georges Vandenbeusch was seized by heavily armed men who burst into his parish at night and reportedly took him to neighbouring Nigeria in an attack claimed by Boko Haram. He was released seven weeks later, touching down in Paris on January 1. Vandenbeusch was abducted from his home near the town of Koza in northern Cameroon, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Nigerian border. He was seized by about 15 people who had first gone to the nuns' house, apparently to look for money, giving him time to warn the embassy. In February 2013, a Frenchman employed by gas group Suez was kidnapped in the same area together with his wife, their four children and his brother, while visiting a national park. They were taken to neighbouring Nigeria and also held by Boko Haram, before being released in April. France and other European countries have often been accused of paying ransoms for hostages, claims the governments have repeatedly denied. The insurgency by Boko Haram, a group aiming to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria, has killed thousands since 2009. Abuja in February sealed a portion of its border with Cameroon to block the movement of insurgents and other criminal groups. BREAKING NEWS: New attacks as France hosts summit on Boko Haram threat
West African leaders are meeting in Paris to discuss the threat posed by Nigeria's Boko Haram militants. French President Francois Hollande, who is hosting the summit, said the group threatened the whole region and had ''proven links'' with al-Qaeda. Thousands of people have been killed by Boko Haram in recent years. Last month it abducted 223 schoolgirls in north-eastern Nigeria, where it is based. As Saturday's summit began, news of fresh violence emerged. In the far north of Cameroon, near the Nigerian border, attackers targeted a camp run by a Chinese engineering company. Ten Chinese workers are missing and one person was injured. There are reports that one person was killed. In Nigeria itself, 11 people were reported killed in a separate attack in village a few hours' drive from the Cameroonian border. A relative of one of the victims said a woman and a child were among the dead. As the Paris meeting opened, Mr Hollande called Boko Haram a ''major threat to West and Central Africa'', and said it had links with al-Qaeda's North-African arm and ''other terrorist organisations''. The summit is also being attended by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and his counterparts from neighbouring Benin, Cameroon, Niger and Chad. Representatives from the UK, US and EU are also taking part. Borno state senator Ahmed Zannah said the killings took place in at least three separate attacks in the state. The attackers are suspected to be from the Islamist Boko Haram movement. At least 1,500 people, half of them civilian, have been killed in the restive north-eastern region this year, according to Amnesty International. The organisation blamed both "an increase in attacks by Boko Haram and uncontrolled reprisals by Nigeria's security forces" for the high death toll. Women 'abducted' Senator Zannah said the attackers first target was a teacher training college in the town of Dikwa. They killed five people there and abducted several women, he said. The attackers burned down the college library before escaping, Mr Zannah said. The militants then attacked two villages near the border with Cameroon killing a further 130 people, the senator said. The attacks took place on Wednesday and Thursday, with initial reports claiming around 70 people had been killed. The Nigerian military has not yet commented on the attacks. A state of emergency has been in place since last year in the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in north-east Nigeria. Human rights groups have criticised both Boko Haram and Nigeria's military for failing to protect civilians. Amnesty International said last month that Nigeria's army killed around 600 people after a Boko Haram attack. Some 250,000 people have been forced to leave their homes because of the fighting, the Nigerian government's relief agency said. Boko Haram has waged an insurgency since 2009 to create a strict Islamic state in northern Nigeria. Boko Haram militants stormed an all-girl secondary school in the village of Chibok, in Borno state, on April 14 and packed the teenagers, who had been taking exams, onto trucks and disappeared into a remote area along the border with Cameroon. The attack shocked Nigerians, who have been growing accustomed to hearing about atrocities in an increasingly bloody five-year-old Islamist insurgency in the north. "I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah," Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau says in a video, chuckling as he stands in front of an armoured personnel carrier with two masked militants wielding AK-47s on either side of him. "Allah has instructed me to sell them. They are his property and I will carry out his instructions," he says. Boko Haram, seen as the main security threat to Nigeria, Africa's leading energy producer, is growing bolder and extending its reach. The kidnapping occurred on the day a bomb blast, also blamed on Boko Haram, killed 75 people on the edge of Abuja, the first attack on the capital in two years. The group's name means "Western education is sinful" and Shekau in the video makes reference to the fact that the girls were undergoing Western education. The militants, who say they are fighting to reinstate a medieval Islamic caliphate in northern Nigeria, carried out a second bomb attack more than two weeks later in the same area, killing 19 people and wounding 34 in the suburb of Nyanya. The girls' abduction has been hugely embarrassing for the government and threatens to overshadow its first hosting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) for Africa on May 7-9. Nigerian officials had hoped the event would highlight their country's potential as an investment destination since it became Africa's biggest economy after a GDP recalculation in March. He said the US team, working with the Nigerian government, would do everything possible to free the girls. Earlier, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said he hoped "a turning point" had been reached in the fight against Islamist insurgents Boko Haram. Nigeria has been criticised for its slow response to the kidnappings. The schoolgirls were seized from their boarding school on the night of 14 April in the town of Chibok in north-eastern Borno state. It is believed they are being held somewhere in the vast forested areas that stretch from near Chibok into neighbouring Cameroon. "Our inter-agency team is hitting the ground in Nigeria now and they are going to be working in concert with President Goodluck Jonathan's government to do everything that we possibly can to return these girls to their families and their communities," Mr Kerry said. "We are also going to do everything possible to counter the menace of Boko Haram." On Wednesday, President Barack Obama said the team comprised personnel from military, law enforcement and other agencies.
