Finally at Hogmanay, revellers cram into the centre to bring in the New Year with big-name bands, a rocking ceildih, gigantic street party and spectacular fireworks. Edinburgh has given birth to a multitude of great fictional works from such luminaries as Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott to current bestselling novelists Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall Smith. Such a rich literary culture led to Edinburgh becoming the world's first ever UNESCO City of Literature in 2004.
