The cab, crew compartment or driver's compartment of a locomotive, or a self-propelled rail vehicle, is the part housing the train driver or engineer, the fireman or driver's assistant (secondman) (if any), and the controls necessary for the locomotive's, or self-propelled rail vehicle's, operation.
On steam locomotives, the cab is normally located to the rear of the firebox, although steam locomotives have sometimes been constructed in a cab forward configuration.
The cab, or crew or driver's compartment of a diesel or electric locomotive will usually be found either inside a cabin attached to a hood unit or cowl unit locomotive, or forming one of the structural elements of a cab unit locomotive.
The former arrangement is now the norm in North America for all types of diesel or electric locomotives. In Europe, most modern locomotives are cab units with two cabs, one at each end. However, the locomotives powering some high speed European trains are normally cab units with one cab, and European shunting locomotives are usually hood units.
A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine, first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines.
A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks. In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars.

Indian Railways (reporting mark IR) is an Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the world's largest railway networks comprising 115,000 km (71,000 mi) of track over a route of 65,808 km (40,891 mi) and 7,112 stations. In 2014-15, IR carried 8.397 billion passengers annually or more than 23 million passengers a day (roughly half of whom were suburban passengers) and 1058.81 million tons of freight in the year. In 2014–2015 Indian Railways had revenues of ₹1634.50 billion (US$24 billion) which consists of ₹1069.27 billion (US$16 billion) from freight and ₹402.80 billion (US$5.9 billion) from passengers tickets.
Railways were first introduced to India in the year 1853 from Mumbai to Thane. In 1951 the systems were nationalised as one unit, the Indian Railways, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, metre and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities at several places in India and are assigned codes identifying their gauge, kind of power and type of operation. Its operations cover twenty nine states and seven union territories and also provides limited international services to Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Have you ever wondered what a modern locomotive looks like from the cab? This video shows a modern Canadian Pacific GE ES44AC (GEVO) locomotive from the hoggers perspective. I really enjoyed being up in a large cab. It was very fun. Please enjoy the video and don't forget to Comment, rate and Subscribe to my channel and this video. LocalRailfan Video Productions 2009.

Locomotive cab video of a dump truck that I hit.
Thanks to a good friend, I got the opportunity to hop inside a Union Pacific locomotive type, C45ACCTE. The train went north along side the I-15 for the most part and continued north for 50 miles. The locomotive I was in was released in service in August 2011, it is a much newer one and apparently according to the crew inside, a much quieter one also. For anyone who has problems with me posting this due to violations of whatever blah blah blah, know that I was invited on board and asked to film from the inside. They told me it was ok just as long as I don't film the controls. Now, that being said, stop asking me to take it down, and telling me Im violating code who gives a crap. Thank you. The Class EF81 is multi-voltage AC/DC electric locomotive for the freight trains and passenger trains by Japan Freight Railway. They were built between 1968 and 1992, and used by JNR(Japanese national railways). EF81 pulls many famous limited express sleeping car trains "Hokutosei", "Cassiopeia", "Twilight Express", "Nihonkai", so on. I observed this locomotive at 2014 open engine depot of Higashi-Niigata. The description can be read as follows; 1) Today between Thakurli and Kalyan stations of Central Railway, my emu overtakes dead brand new WDG-4D# 70324, dead ASN WAG-5HA# 23647 and a leading ASN WAG-5HA# 23348 2) After 2kms, my emu gets a red signal and gets overtaken by Leading ASN WAG-5HA# 23348 pulling a dead ASN WAG-5HA# 23647 and dead brand new WDG-4D# 70324. Railfan Prathamesh Yeram can be seen in action too. WDG-4D is the first ever Dual Cab Freight Locomotive on Indian Railways manufactured by DLW Varanasi (Diesel Locomotive Works). The locomotive has been designed on a 21.7 metre platform to accommodate two cabs and this is about two meters longer than the single cab version. The cabs have full width front view. Besides the obvious visibility advantages, the locomotive also h...
