The incident reflected the growing complexity of the situation in the Central African Republic, a former French colony plunged into chaos last year after a coalition of mostly Muslim rebels ousted President Francois Bozize. They have since been forced out of power, but Christian and Muslim militias continue to battle for control. Human rights investigators said the March 29 incident began when Chadian national army soldiers entered Bangui in a convoy of several military pick-up trucks. They entered a crowded market where shoppers included women and children, and opened fire, a U.N. report said Friday. "As panic-stricken people fled in all directions, the soldiers allegedly continued firing indiscriminately," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N.'s office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. "Several sources told the investigating team that they believed the Chadian force had entered Bangui to extract remaining Chadians and other Muslim inhabitants in order to save them from further attacks by (Christian militias)," Colville said. The U.N. said the soldiers who were responsible for the Bangui attack were Chadian soldiers but not among those who are part of the African-led International Support Mission peacekeeping mission that's trying to stabilize the Central African Republic. "It seems they have gone straight back to Chad without being apprehended," Colville said of the attackers. About 850 Chadian soldiers are part of the 6,000-strong peacekeeping presence, but on Thursday, Chad's foreign ministry issued a statement saying the country planned to withdraw its troops from the force, according to CNN French affiliate BFMTV. "Despite the sacrifices we have made, Chad and Chadians have been targeted in a gratuitous and malicious campaign that blamed them for all the suffering in (Central African Republic)," said a statement from Chad's foreign ministry. According to protesters, one person was killed but that has not been confirmed. The medical charity Medecins sans Frontières said about 40 people were treated for injuries, most of whom had been slightly hurt in a stampede as people panicked. The clashes are complicating international efforts to calm inter-religious violence in large landlocked state, where France has deployed 1,600 troops to protect civilians. Despite French pleas for the crowd to disperse, many among the capital's majority Christian population accuse the troops from neighbouring Chad of siding with Muslim rebels. One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force. The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Chadian peacekeepers were accused of standing aside. In the latest clash witnesses said they reacted to stones being thrown by firing into the air - and the crowd. In other developments, the European Union has banned the export of arms to the Central African Republic and mercenaries from being sent to the country. Chadian peacekeepers shot dead three civilians in a Christian neighborhood of the capital of Central African Republic on Monday, residents said. Bangui's Christian population accuse the Muslim Chadians of backing Muslim Seleka rebels - some of whom came from Chad - since they seized power in the mostly Christian Central African Republic and embarked on months of looting and killing. The conflict in Central African Republic receives far less media attention than Darfur, but the effects are much the same. In all, more than 50,000 refugees are sheltering in southern Chad. Thousands Flee Gun Battle As Chad Withdraw From Central African Republic
Thousands fled a gun battle between Chadian troops escorting a convoy of Muslim civilians and local militia in the Central African Republic Tuesday, as Chad completed a withdrawal of soldiers from its violence-ravaged neighbor. The Chadian troops were escorting the last 540 Muslim residents of the northwestern town of Bossangoa to Gore in Chad when militia attacked the convoy at night on April 11th as it passed through Boguila, around 310 miles north of the capital Bangui. The Chadian soldiers fought back, and three wounded were later admitted to MSF facilities in Boguila and Paoua. The Central African Republic has descended into chaos since the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition seized power a year ago. Its abuses on the majority Christian population triggered waves of revenge attacks, leading to thousands of deaths and displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians, including the majority of the country's Muslims. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/glYfFHSemRY/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com- published: 16 Apr 2014

Chad Closes Border With Central African Republic
Chad's President Idriss Deby said its border with Central African Republic had been closed pending an end to intercommunal violence there that has killed thousands and forced nearly one million people to flee their homes. Thousands of French and African troops have failed to stop the waves of killings that erupted after the predominantly Muslim Seleka rebel movement seized power in the majority-Christian former French colony in March 2013. Deby said the 1,000-km frontier would remain open to Chadian citizens wishing to return home. Chad, previously at the heart of African efforts to stabilize the neighboring country, withdrew its forces from Central African Republic last month. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/YxbdgtPR2u0/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com- published: 12 May 2014

Central African Republic Government Summoned To Chad
Central African Republic Government Summoned To Chad
The entire transitional assembly of the Central African Republic (CAR) has flown to Chad to attend a summit aimed at restoring peace in the country. Regional leaders said the 135 members had been summoned because only they could decide the fate of their country. Interim CAR President Michel Djotodia, also in Chad, is under pressure over his failure to contain fighting between Christian and Muslim militias. However, his spokesman has insisted he will not resign. Leaders from the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) suspended their talks on Thursday as they awaited the arrival of the lawmakers in the Chadian capital N'Djamena. ECCAS Secretary-General Ahmat Allami said members of the National Transitional Council (CNT) had been flown in at short notice to decide the leadership of their nation. "No-one can speak on behalf of the Central Africans," Mr Allami was quoted by Reuters as saying. "That's why we have asked the CNT and representatives of political parties to come to N'Djamena to decide on the future of the transitional institutions." Mr Allami said earlier that "regime change" was not the goal of the meeting. The lawmakers met regional leaders while Mr Djotodia held separate talks with allies from his former Seleka rebel alliance, AFP news agency reported. Under a deal brokered by regional powers last year, the CNT is charged with choosing a transitional leader to take CAR to elections due at the end of 2014. It formally elected Mr Djotodia to his position as interim president last April. Chadian President Idriss Deby opened the meeting with a call for "concrete and decisive action" to stop the violence that has killed more than 1,000 people in the past month. The talks are expected to continue on Friday, Chadian sources said. Seleka rebels in CAR staged a coup last March, installing Mr Djotodia as the country's first Muslim leader. The then-President Francois Bozize, from CAR's majority Christian population, was forced into exile and the country has since descended into chaos. The UN has warned of an impending humanitarian disaster. Although Mr Djotodia has officially disbanded the Seleka rebels, he has proved unable to keep them in check. Their actions have prompted Christians to form vigilante groups, sparking a deadly cycle of revenge attacks. Nearly a million people have been displaced by the fighting. The AU has some 4,000 peacekeepers in the country and France has deployed 1,600 troops to try to end the violence.- published: 10 Jan 2014
