Hawaiian Islands & Predictions about their Future
A look at the geologic puzzle of how the isolated Hawaiian Islands chain was formed and predictions about their future. The Hawaiian Islands (Hawaiian: Mokupuni o Hawai'i) are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean, extending some 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometres) from the island of Hawaiʻi in the south to northernmost Kure Atoll. Once known as the "Sandwich Islands", the name chosen by James Cook in honour of the then First Lord of the Admiralty John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, the archipelago now takes its name from the largest island in the cluster. The U.S. state of Hawaii occupies the archipelago almost in its entirety, with the sole exception of Midway island, which is instead an unincorporated territory within the United States Minor Outlying Islands The Hawaiian Islands are the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the Earth's mantle. The islands are about 1,860 miles (3,000 km) from the nearest continent. Earthquakes The Hawaiian Islands have many earthquakes, generally caused by volcanic activity. Most of the early earthquake monitoring took place in Hilo, by missionaries Titus Coan, Sarah J. Lyman and her family. From 1833 to 1896, approximately 4 or 5 earthquakes were reported per year. Hawaii accounted for 7.3% of the United States' reported earthquakes with a magnitude 3.5 or greater from 1974 to 2003, with a total 1533 earthquakes. Hawaii ranked as the state with the third most earthquakes over this time period, after Alaska and California. On Sunday, October 15, 2006, there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 off the northwest coast of the island of Hawaii, near the Kona area of the big island. The initial earthquake was followed approximately five minutes later by a magnitude 5.7 aftershock. Minor-to-moderate damage was reported on most of the Big Island. Several major roadways became impassable from rock slides, and effects were felt as far away as Honolulu, Oahu, nearly 150 miles (240 km) from the epicenter. Power outages lasted for several hours to whole days. Several water mains ruptured. No deaths or life-threatening injuries were reported. Earthquakes are monitored by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory run by the USGS. Tsunamis The Hawaiian Islands are subject to tsunamis, great waves that strike the shore. Tsunamis are most often caused by earthquakes somewhere in the Pacific. The waves produced by the earthquakes travel at speeds of 400--500 miles per hour (600--800 km/h) and can affect coastal regions thousands of miles (kilometers) away. Tsunamis may also initiate in the Hawaiian Islands. Explosive volcanic activity can cause tsunamis. The island of Molokaʻi had a catastrophic collapse or debris avalanche over a million years ago; this underwater landslide likely caused tsunamis. The Hilina Slump on the island of Hawaiʻi is another potential place for a large landslide and resulting tsunami. The city of Hilo on the Big Island has been most affected by tsunamis, where the in-rushing water is accentuated by the shape of Hilo Bay. Coastal cities have tsunami warning sirens. A tsunami resulting from an earthquake in Chile hit the islands on February 27, 2010. It was relatively minor, but local emergency management officials utilized the latest technology and ordered evacuations in preparation for a possible major event. It was declared a "good drill" for the next major event by the Governor. A tsunami resulting from an earthquake in Japan hit the islands on March 11, 2011. It was relatively minor, but local officials ordered evacuations in preparation for a possible major event. The tsunami caused about $1 million in damages, almost all limited to the Kona coast of the Big Island. However, due to the deep underwater trenches that surround the Hawaiian islands, very few tsunamis reach them.- published: 12 Dec 2013

Amazing Hawaiian Poke Bowl at Kahuku Superette
Amazing Hawaiian Poke Bowl at Kahuku Superette
Hawaiian poke, and the poke bowl, is one of my favorite meals. Get details about Kahuku Superette here: http://migrationology.com/2012/04/hawaiian-poke-bowl-kahuku-superette/ There are lots of reasons to visit Hawaii, but the best reason in my opinion is to take advantage of the delicious food. You'll find all sorts of, especially Asian food, and a lot of local Hawaiian food as well. One of the ultimate things I love to eat in Hawaii is known as poke. Hawaiian poke is basically cubes of raw fish marinated in a variety of seasonings that usually includes soy sauce and sesame oil, among many different other ingredients depending on what you order. Normally as soon as possible, after landing in Honolulu, I go straight to the nearest restaurant to grab some fresh poke. It's like candy for me, and I could eat it every single day of my life - it really is one of my favorite foods in the world. There are all sorts of different types of poke, including spicy ahi poke, shoyu poke, salmon poke, and even poke made with different kinds of seafood. One of the most common and beloved types of Hawaiian poke is made from freshly caught ahi, which is tuna. Often times poke is bought by the pound, in small plastic containers, and then eaten along with a full Hawaiian style meal, or picnic. Poke goes great with fried chicken, SPAM musubi, fried noodles, or it actually just goes great by itself, or with only a hot fresh bowl of rice. Something that is very popular these days is called a poke bowl. You basically order as much rice as you want, and then they put the raw fish right on top of the hot rice in a bowl. You can get poke bowls all over Hawaii and Honolulu, but one of the best places on the island, is a little convenience store known as Kahuku Superette. Kahuku Superette is a very average looking shop in the small town of Kahuku, on the island of Oahu. It really doesn't look like much from the outside, and when you walk in you'll immediately see mostly beer and drinks that they are selling, and canned goods. But keep walking towards the back of the shop, and that's when you'll see the glass cabinet fridge, showcasing a beautiful display of fresh poke. There are only a few choices to choose from at Kahuku Superette, and probably the most popular is their sweet onion shoyu poke. You can order it with no rice, but I think the best way to get it is with hot white rice at the bottom, and at least a half a pound of the poke right on top. They only have takeaway, so after you order, you can either eat some right there in your car, or you can drive to the nearest beach like we did. Whatever you decide, your mouth is going to be watering as soon as you get your poke bowl. Along with poke at Kahuku Superette, they also have things like kimchi, which also goes great with rice and raw fish. So we headed to go to the nearest beach, and I was incredibly excited to start digging in. The cubes of fish were literally like butter, extremely tender and just melted in my mouth. The pieces of fish were also extremely flavorful, coated in a wonderful sauce made from lots of sesame oil, soy sauce, and those wonderful sweet onions, and also a hint of chili pepper. The poke bowl, including cold fish along with hot fresh steamed rice, is one of the world's great combinations, and it never gets old for me. Terrifying Video of Hawaiian Plane Crash From Inside the Cabin [INCREDIBLE]
Terrifying Video of Hawaiian Plane Crash From Inside the Cabin [INCREDIBLE] Dramatic video of a plane crash that killed a woman off the coast of Hawaii last month shows the moment of impact and an orderly evacuation of the fuselage by passengers, who used plane debris to stay afloat as they waited to be rescued. Passenger Ferdinand Puentes, 39, was on the 2002 Cessna Grand Caravan and captured the footage of passengers' bracing for impact moments before the plane crashed into the water Dec. 11. The plane departed from Molokai, Hawaii, bound for Honolulu with nine people on board. Hawaii's state health director, Loretta Fuddy, 65, was the only fatality. Survivor: Hawaii Plane Crash 'Like Instant Brakes' "We heard a bang," passenger Jacob Key told ABC News affiliate KITV-TV. "While the thing climbed up to make a turn. Then bang, that's it." Puentes continued to keep the camera rolling after the crash as the fuselage immediately filled with water. "Just as soon as he opened the door, water just rushed and filled our feet up to our ankles," Puentes told ABC News. In the video, the passengers can be seen making their way out calmly. "There wasn't panic or anything. It was very orderly. It wasn't like any of the movies or the TV shows," passenger C. Phillip Hollstein Jr. told The Associated Press. Out in the water, they clung to the wings and debris of the plane with the camera still rolling. "The water was rough. The pilot was trying to get everybody together but it was kind of impossible because of the waves," Rosa Key, another passenger, told KITV.- published: 10 Jan 2014
