According to a new global analysis, almost a third of the world is now fat, and no country has been able to curb obesity rates in the last three decades.
Researchers found more than 2 billion people worldwide are now overweight or obese. The highest rates were in the Middle East and North Africa, where nearly 60 percent of men and 65 percent of women are heavy. The U.S. has about 13 percent of the world\'s fat population, a greater percentage than any other country. China and India combined have about 15 percent.

The Ukrainian elections are Sunday, and there\'s still uncertainty that they will actually take place in eastern Ukraine. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels around the eastern part of the country to gauge the vibe before election day.

He interviews Ukraine\'s Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov about plans to make sure everything goes smoothly in Donetsk and Luhansk — areas which have a heavy presence of pro-Russia forces. He then visits a polling station in Donetsk where nearby a Ukrainian checkpoint was attacked a few hours earlier resulting in at least 11 deaths, and meets up with the Donbas Battalion, who are working to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the elections. Despite the measures that are being taken by Ukrainian troops and officials, it\'s still unclear what tomorrow will bring.

The USS Bataan, with about 1,000 Marines aboard, has sailed into the Mediterranean Sea to assist in evacuating Americans if deadly fighting in Libya worsens, U.S. military officials said Tuesday.

Officials said the Navy amphibious assault ship sailed from the Arabian Sea and was already scheduled to go to the Mediterranean to participate in a multi-county military exercise in the region. However, they made clear the ship has received no formal orders to conduct new missions.

President Obama announced Tuesday that the U.S. plans to remove all troops from Afghanistan by 2016, starting with reducing the troop presence in the country to just 9,800 and an end to the U.S. combat mission at the close of 2014.
May 27, 2014 3:30

The move will mark the first time in Mr. Obama\'s presidency that the U.S. has not had an active combat mission in a foreign country.
We have now been in Afghanistan longer than many Americans expected but make no mistake: thanks to the skill and sacrifice of our troops, diplomats and intelligence professionals we have struck significant blows against al Qaeda\'s leadership, we have eliminated Osama bin Laden and we\'ve prevented Afghanistan from being used to launch attacks against our homeland,\

A US special operations mission intended to capture a terror suspect in Somalia ended when al Shabaab fighters began using children as human shields, according to a report by NBC News.

A team of Navy SEALs from Seal Team 6 landed on a beach near the southern Somali town of Barawe.

They took positions inside a compound where an al Shabaab warlord named Ikrima was located.

The Kenyan-born Ikrima, whose real name is Abdikadar Mohamed Abdikadar, was named by a Kenyan government intelligence document as coordinating various planned attacks against the East African nation.

The SEALs were spotted by a lone al Shabaab fighter and came under fire.

The al Shabaab fighters allegedly moved children out of the fortified compound to use them as human shields.

Unable to extract their target, the SEALs opted to withdraw.

Provisional results show that former military chief Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is heading for a huge victory in Egypt\'s presidential election.Supporters of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi celebrate victory at Egypt\'s presidential election before the polls close. Preliminary results show Sisi with a huge lead. Celebrations lasted through the night in Tahrir Square, the heart of a popular uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in 2011. President Mohammed Morsi, who replaced Mubarak, was democratically elected and one of the few leaders who was not from the military. But two years later and fireworks are set off in homage to Sisi, a general. Many Egyptians see him as as strong figure who can end the country\'s turmoil. He interviews Ukraine's Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov about plans to make sure everything goes smoothly in Donetsk and Luhansk — areas which have a heavy presence of pro-Russia forces. He then visits a polling station in Donetsk where nearby a Ukrainian checkpoint was attacked a few hours earlier resulting in at least 11 deaths, and meets up with the Donbas Battalion, who are working to ensure that everyone will be able to participate in the elections. Despite the measures that are being taken by Ukrainian troops and officials, it's still unclear what tomorrow will bring. However, they made clear the ship has received no formal orders to conduct new missions. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/05/27/navy-ship-with-1000-marines-arrives-off-libya-ready-to-help-americans-if-unrest/?cmpid=cmty_twitter_fn http://rt.com/news/161832-marines-warship-libya-coast/

"Edward Snowden, in an exclusive interview with "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, is fighting back against critics who dismissed him as a low-level hacker — saying he was "trained as a spy" and offered technical expertise to high levels of government. "I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word, in that I lived and worked undercover overseas — pretending to work in a job that I'm not — and even being assigned a name that was not mine," Snowden said in the interview." President Obama U.S. will have 9,800 troops in Afghanistan after 2014
President Obama U.S. will have 9,800 troops in Afghanistan after 2014

President Obama announced Tuesday that the U.S. plans to remove all troops from Afghanistan by 2016, starting with reducing the troop presence in the country to just 9,800 and an end to the U.S. combat mission at the close of 2014. May 27, 2014 3:30 The move will mark the first time in Mr. Obama's presidency that the U.S. has not had an active combat mission in a foreign country. We have now been in Afghanistan longer than many Americans expected but make no mistake: thanks to the skill and sacrifice of our troops, diplomats and intelligence professionals we have struck significant blows against al Qaeda's leadership, we have eliminated Osama bin Laden and we've prevented Afghanistan from being used to launch attacks against our homeland," the president said. The U.S. will leave 9,800 troops in the country in 2015 with two narrow missions, according to the White House: continue supporting Afghan forces, who took the lead ins securing the country last year, and continuing to support counter terrorism operations against the remnants of al Qaeda. The number of forces will be reduced by about half by the end of 2015, the administration says, and by the end of 2016 will eventually consist of a normal embassy presence with a security assistance office in Kabul, as is the case in Iraq. At the peak of the war, there were 100,000 troops in Afghanistan. Today, there are about 32,000. Mr. Obama noted in his remarks that when he took office, there were 180,000 trooped deployed abroad. The future of U.S. troop presence has been uncertain for months as Afghan President Hamid Karzai has refused to sign a security agreement allowing U.S. troops to stay after the combat mission is concluded at the end of this year. The candidates running to replace Karzai have indicated they will sign an agreement, but the uncertainty has delayed the U.S. military's ability to plan for the future. "We believe that the long-term solution for Afghan security is not U.S. forces, it's Afghan forces, and that we've trained and equipped an Afghan National Security Force that needs to be responsible for securing their country," a senior administration official said ahead of the president's announcement. "This has never been a situation where the United States was signing on to provide security in Afghanistan indefinitely." The president reiterated the necessity of signing the security agreement, but said he was hopeful it could be done.

The revolt had been a long time brewing. The rising voices of discontent. The anti-austerity protests. The steady rise of Eurosceptic parties. Even so, the shock could not be disguised when a stridently anti-EU party topped the poll in France. Only a short while ago the far right National Front (FN) was placed on the extremist fringe of French politics. The French Prime Minister Manuel Valls did not try and explain away the result. He said it was "more than just a news alert... it is a shock, an earthquake." It is all the more surprising when one remembers that France - along with Germany - is one of the principal architects of the European project. Now the FN's Marine Le Pen is claiming "a first step in a long march to liberty" away from the EU. Impact of jobs crisis So what has happened? The vote is, of course, in part a protest. The Socialist government is widely despised and unemployment remains stubbornly high. The French economy is stagnating. Marine Le Pen has cleverly tapped into the frustration with globalisation and job insecurity. She understands the fear of immigration, when nearly 26 million people are out of work in the EU. (It should also be pointed out that abstentions helped inflate the size of the FN victory.) Navy SEALs Somalia raid: Al Shabaab uses children as human shields

Originally Published on October 10, 2013 A US special operations mission intended to capture a terror suspect in Somalia ended when al Shabaab fighters began using children as human shields, according to a report by NBC News. "While the operation did not result in Ikrima's capture," read a statement by Pentagon press secretary George Little, "U.S. military personnel conducted the operation with unparalleled precision and demonstrated that the United States can put direct pressure on al Shabaab leadership at any time of our choosing." The SEALs were members of the unit that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011. "After the past few years and the bin Laden raid, everyone thinks these operations are easy -- they're not," said a senior military official familiar with the operation, cited by NBC. "The area doesn't have the same support network for us as Afghanistan and Iraq."

Provisional results show that former military chief Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is heading for a huge victory in Egypt's presidential election.Supporters of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi celebrate victory at Egypt's presidential election before the polls close. Many Egyptians see him as as strong figure who can end the country's turmoil. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) EGYPTIAN WOMAN, NAGAH AHMED, SAYING: "I am thrilled, we won't eat or drink if we need to to support him, and we are going to stand by him, because we love Egypt. And also because I am a daughter of the place he is from. But he is the President for all Egyptians, and he is a man who has something to say and who has a personality and we have needed a man for a long time." But for his opponents there's not much to dance about. As counting comes to a close, the judiciary said Sisi had captured more than 93 percent of the vote. But it's also apparent turnout was low, raising questions about Sisi's credibility. Many Islamic groups boycotted the election. Sisi overthrew President Morsi last July after mass protests. He also oversaw a bloody purge of Morsi's Islamic Brotherhood in which more than 1,400 people were killed and thousands detained. As the last votes are being counted, many Egyptians still feel his policies are vague on how he'll tackle the country's challenges of corruption and high unemployment.
