Os militares alegavam que era necessário que eles tomassem o poder para evitar que o "perigo comunista" acabasse com o atual sistema democrático capitalista. O golpe aplicado pelos militares recebeu apoio amplo das elites e das camadas mais conservadoras da sociedade que eram contrarias ao modelo de governo de centro-esquerda aplicado por João Goulart. Os militares afirmavam que assim que o "perigo comunista" fosse totalmente dizimado o poder seria devolvido aos civis por meio de eleições democráticas. Até a posse do novo presidente o Brasil foi governado por uma Junta militar. A Junta Militar decretou o Ato Institucional nº 1 (AI-1) O General Humberto Alencar de Castelo Branco, um dos lideres do golpe militar de 1964, foi eleito presidente pelo Congresso Nacional. Foi eleito seu vice José Maria Alckmin (apoiado pela UDN e de setores do PSD. Ambos tomaram posse no sai 15 de Abril de 1964. A UNIVESP TV reuniu três pessoas que participaram do governo João Goulart (1961-1964), deposto por um golpe civil-militar que levou o Brasil a uma ditadura de 21 anos. Waldir Pires (então Consultor-geral da República), Almino Affonso (então deputado-federal e ex-ministro de Goulart) e Eduardo Chuahy (então assessor da Casa Militar) rememoraram os fatos que antecederam da deposição até o exílio do presidente, no Uruguai. Em pauta, a necessidade das reformas de base, a confiança de Goulart no apoio dos militares, o clima tenso no Legislativo e a consequente declaração de vacância da presidência da República pelo presidente do Congresso Nacional. O debate foi realizado no dia 7/2/2014, no Centro Cultural São Paulo.
