Legend gives him the date 3102 B.C. (i.e., the beginning of the kali yuga). He was born in the asterism Visakham, in what is now Alwar Thirunagari, Tamil Nadu. His name means "our own Azhwar (azhwar means "one immersed in God"). He was also known as Maran and Sadagopan.
His contribution of four works (numbering 1296 hymns) to the four thousand of the Divya Prabhandham includes the entire fourth thousand and part of the third thousand. these works are
Thiruvaimozhi (1102 verses),
Tiruviruttam (100 verses),
TiruvAsiriam (7 verses) and
Periya Tiruvanthadi (87 verses).
Tiruvaymozhi describes Ranganatha as a metaphor to discussing the philosophical details in
The nature of the paramatma (divine soul)
The nature of the jeevatma (living soul)
The means for the jeevatma (living soul) to attain the goal of Paramatma (divine soul)
The blocks and hurdles on the way and
The goal moksha (divinity).
In the Srivaishnava canon, these four represent (in Tamil language) the four Sanskrit vedas, respectively, the Sama Veda, Rig Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. According to tradition "He poured the cream of these vedas" into his songs and poetry that were the result of deep mystic experience. Though Nammalvar did not visit any of the 108 divyadesam temples talked about in the Vaishnava religion it appears from his works he must have had the vision of all the archa forms in the temples he had glorified in his hymns.

Thirumangai Alwar, the last of twelve Alwars sang one of his divine Pasurams (Thiru-Nedun-Thaandakam) to Lord Ranganatha. The Lord (Emperuman) was pleased by the meaning of the pasuram and granted two boons to Thirumangai Alwar. The Alwar took this propitious moment and asked Lord Ranganatha the following two boons:
1. The Lord with his divine consorts should listen to the divine Pasurams, Thiruvaimozhi
2. The sacred verses of Alwars i.e. 4000 Divya Prabhandams should be given the equal status in terms of authority and supremacy to that of Vedas. Lord Ranganatha agreed to the above request and singing of 4000 verses (Divya Prabhandham) has become the Sri Vaishnava tradition of worship. This is celebrated as the Adhyayana Utsavam in Sri Vaishnava temple such as Srirangam and Tirumala.
The Adhyayana Utsavam is celebrated Ten days before Vaikunta Ekadasi in the morning hours (called "Pagal Pathu", also known as "Thirumozhi Thirunal); and Ten days after Vaikunta Ekadasi in the evening hours (called "Irapathu", also known as "Thirivaimozhi Thirunal").

Thiruppavai - Margazhi Thingal - K. Veeramani & Radha
The Tiruppavai is a collection of thirty stanzas (paasuram) in Tamil written by Andal, in praise of the Lord Perumal, (= Vishnu; Tamil). It is part of Divya Prabandha, a work of the twelve Alvars, and is important in Tamil literature.
Tiruppavai belongs to the Pavai genre of songs, a unique Tamil tradition sung in the context of the Pavai vow observed throughout the month of Margazhi, originally by unmarried girls praying to the Pavai goddess (related to Parvati) for a blissful married life. Sri Vaishnavas sing these stanzas every day of the year in the temple as well as in their homes. This practice assumes special significance during Margazhi: each day of this month gets its name from one of the thirty verses. There are references to this vow in the late-sangam era Tamil musical anthology Paripadal.
Andal's thirty songs contain the cardinal principles of Vaishnava dharma during the month of Marghazhi. Vaishnavas sing these songs to bring peace, prosperity and Divine Grace. Andal assumes the guise of a cowherd in these 30 verses. Andal appears intent upon performing a particular religious vow to marry the Lord, thereby obtain His everlasting company, and inviting all her girl-friends to join her. Towards the end we learn that she did not actually perform a religious rite; but is simply praying to be granted the service of the Lord for eternity. She yearns for everlasting happiness and service of the Lord.
Song Name-Raga-Thala : Margazhi Thingal Nattai - Adi
Verse
மார்கழித் திங்கள் மதிநிறைந்த நன்னாளால்;
Explanation to this Verse:
In this month of Marghazhi,
On this day filled with the light of moon,
Come for bathing,
Oh ladies who are richly dressed,
And Oh ladies in rich homes of cowherds,
For he with the sharp spear,
He who kills his enemies without mercy,
He who is the son of Nanda gopa,
He who is the darling son of Yasodha,
Who wore scented flower garlands,
He who is a lion cub,
He who is pretty in black colour,
He who has small red eyes,
He who has a face like the well-lit moon,
And He, who is our Lord Narayana,
Is going to give us big drums,
So that we bathe and worship Our Goddess Pavai,
In a way that the whole world sings about.

Verse
Meaning:
If we sing the praise of Him,
Who grew big and measured the world,
And worship our Goddess Pavai,
Then would there be at least three rains a month,
And the red paddy plants would grow big,
And in their fields would the fish swim and play,
And the spotted bees after sipping honey,
To their hearts content,
Would sleep in the flower themselves
After having their fill,
And the cows with big udder
Would fill milk pots to the brim,
And healthy cows and never diminishing wealth,
Would fill the country,
And all this I assure by worship of our Goddess Pavai.

Songs for waking up the Lord was not a common tradition in Hinduism. The famous exhortation of Sage Viswamithra to Lord Rama in Bala Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana viz
"Kousalya Supraja Rama, Poorva Sandhya pravarthathe,
Uthishta Nara Sardula , Karthavyam daivamahnikam"
Which requested him to wake up and do his ritualistic duties to God, is perhaps the only such waking up poem of the Puranas. This is strange since the system of sending Lord to sleep and waking up is prevalent in most of the famous temples of Tamil Nadu. This great Suprabatham (called Thiru palli ezhuchi) to wake up Lord Ranganatha which belongs to the Vaishavite literature or the one by Manikkavasagar to wake up lord Thiruperum thurai near trichinopoly which belongs to the Shaivite literaturehttp://www.hindupedia.com/en/Thirupalliyezhuchi(Tamil)) must be one of the first Suprabathams ever written. Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham which is used to wake up Lord Venkateswara of Thirupathi which was written about a hundred years back must be the most popular one.
The Nalayira Divya Prabandham (Tamil: நாலாயிர திவ்ய பிரபந்தம்) is a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses (Naalayira in Tamil means 'four thousand') composed before 8th century AD, by the 12 Azhwars, and was compiled in its present form by Nathamuni during the 9th -- 10th centuries. The work is the beginning of the canonization of the 12 Vaishnava poet saints, and these hymns are still sung extensively even today. The works were lost before they were collected and organized in the form of an anthology by Nathamuni.
The Prabandha sings the praise of Narayana (or Vishnu) and his many forms. The Azhwars sung these songs at various sacred shrines. These shrines are known as the Divya Desams (Holy Abodes of Vishnu)

Tiruppavai is a collection of thirty stanzas (paasuram) in Tamil written by Andal, in praise of the Lord Perumal, (= Vishnu; Tamil). It is part of Divya Prabandha, a work of the twelve Alvars, and is important in Tamil literature.
The Thiruppavai also includes 3 thaniyans (literally, 'singletons' or stand alone verses) composed by later authors to introduce older texts. The first tanniyan, 'Nila tungastana...' in Sanskrit was composed by Parasara Pattar, and the next two tanniyans, 'Anna vayal pudhuvai...' and "Choodi kodutha..." (translated below) were composed by Sri Uyyakondar.

ROCKFORT TEMPLE - TRICHY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR1YLwV7taU
The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple or Tiruvarangam is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ranganatha, a reclining form of Hindu deity, Vishnu located in Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India . Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, this temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil literature canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th--9th centuries CE and is counted as the first and foremost among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu.
It is one of the most illustrious Vaishnava temples in South India rich in legend and history. Its location, on an island in Cauvery river, has rendered it vulnerable to natural disasters as well as the rampaging of invading armies -- Muslim and European -- which repeatedly commandeered the site for military encampment. The main entrance, known as the Rajagopuram (the royal temple tower), rises from the base area of around 13 cents (around 5720 sq ft) and goes up to 237 feet (72 m), moving up in eleven progressively smaller tiers. The annual 21 day festival conducted during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December--January) attracts 1 million visitors. Srirangam temple is often listed as the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world, the still larger Angkor Wat being the largest existing temple. The temple occupies an area of 156 acres (631,000 m²) with a perimeter of 4,116m (10,710 feet) making it the largest temple in India and one of the largest religious complexes in the world.
