IIECI Lviv Event Promo 2014
Reflections on Global Political Theory (With special reference to Caritas in Veritate). Conference Theme. The growing worldwide interest in global political theory inevitably entails a wide range of questions dealing with moral universalism, cultural relativism, universal principles of civil and political justice, global distributive justice, structures of international political systems, relations between distinct political establishments, and war. It is hardly possible anymore to reflect upon domestic political theory without considering the debates and issues dominating global theory, nor would it be wise. In the last two months of 2013, Ukraine has manifested the power of moral principles and the vitality of human dignity when confronted with the outrageous abuse of political power -- corrupt within and violent on the outside. The protest, which initially intended to protect Ukrainian integration with the European Union, has become a massive, nationwide upheaval of millions to defend freedom and dignity in Ukraine. Having faced the brutality of the special police forces battering the peaceful demonstrators in the streets of Kyiv, Ukrainians are confronted with tough questions about the relationship between moral truth and public life: will conscience, tethered to moral truth and ordered to the common good, become a guiding principle of the social and political life in Ukraine of the 21st century? What are the chances to overcome the toxic aftereffects caused by seven decades of Communism and to become victorious in the current struggle for freedom and dignity against the brute force detached from any notion of moral responsibility? The temptation for totalitarianism -- vividly and manifoldly present in the post-soviet mentality and culture -- emerges as a real challenge and a threat anywhere on the globe whenever public authority is detached from public accountability. What are the principles of global political theory that let people stand firm for human dignity and freedom, respect differences, shape and deepen their solidarity in protecting and working for the common good? In a spirit of genuine receptivity and cooperation, the International Institute for Ethics and Contemporary Issues at UCU invites philosophers, social scientists, theologians, historians, and other academics interested in these issues to participate in an international conference at UCU to reflect together on these vital and important issues.- published: 04 Mar 2014

Rabbi David Hartman on The Leon Charney Report (Jerusalem Interview)
Rabbi Hartman was one of the few Orthodox voices that attempted to articulate a Jewish theology that squared a religious particularism to the circle of moral universalism. The personal tragedy of Rabbi Hartman was that he succeeded so profoundly. In South Jerusalem he found a community that would listen, and he transformed it into the humming hub of liberal Judaism that it is today. The trouble is there's no other place like it. - Elisheva Goldberg of The Daily Beast http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/02/11/the-tragedy-and-success-of-rabbi-david-hartman.html Excerpts from the interview with Leon Charney: ...We use external symbols... the menorah, Hatikvah song, Hebrew. Oh, those are nice things, but they are not depth. They are not things that build character. They are not things that build the soul of a nation. We are looking for our soul and we need to find ways in which our people could bring us back to the Jewish tradition. Stijn Bruers: The Moral Hand at IARC 2013 Luxembourg
Using a metaphor of five moral fingers working together as the moral hand, I construct a coherent ethical system of five ethical principles based on strong moral intuitions, which I apply to animal ethics. The thumb represents the principle of universalism, which generates a golden rule and an anti-discrimination rule. The index finger symbolizes a welfare ethic, based on the coherence of impartiality and empathy. It points at the values of well-being and justice. Using famous moral dilemmas, I introduce the middle finger as the `mere means` principle of a rights ethic: sentient beings have a right not to be used as merely means to someone else`s ends. Both animal welfare and rights ethics face a highly underestimated challenge: the predation problem. I discuss a fourth principle, the ring finger of an environmental ethic, which refers to the values of biodiversity and naturalness. It adopts some elements of carnism, the opposite of veganism as ideology. This fourth principle solves the predation problem and is coherent with other moral intuitions. Finally, the little finger represents the principle of tolerated partiality which can be used in some final moral dilemmas (e.g. "your child or the dog?" type burning house dilemmas). With these five fingers of ethics, I grasp the moral problem of consuming animal products, and demonstrate that veganism is the only consistent moral choice. +++++++++++++++++ Gefällen dir die Videos? The Martinez Perspective Ep. 5: Vladimir Putin -- Moral Actor or Machiavellian Realist?
The Martinez Perspective Ep. 5: Vladimir Putin -- Moral Actor or Machiavellian Realist?
On this episode of The Martinez Perspective, host Brandon Martinez is joined by journalist and radio host Joshua Blakeney. The focus of this discussion was the dogmatism of the Left, how ideologues discard facts and truths that do not coincide with their ideology, Zionist militarism, neocon wars and the role of Vladimir Putin's Russia in world affairs. Is Vladimir Putin a "hero" as some anti-Zionists view him to be? Is he a moral actor or a Machiavellian realist motivated purely by self-interest and economic considerations? Martinez and Blakeney discuss and debate Putin's motivations and whether or not the view of Putin as "good guy" is parochial and superficial. They also discussed the merits and drawbacks of realism vs. idealism and the dichotomy of being an activist vs. an intellectual. Should we prioritize certain independence struggles over others? For example, is the Chechen struggle for self-determination from Russia fundamentally different from that of the Palestinians? Should we place some victims of imperial governments above others on a quasi-caste system of victimhood? And how is that compatible with a moral universalist outlook? All of these interesting concepts and ideas are discussed on the show. Don't miss this one! http://martinezperspective.wordpress.com- published: 22 Apr 2014

im Back and more evil then ever before.
im Back and more evil then ever before.
Evil is profound immorality.[1] In certain religious contexts evil has been described as a supernatural force.[1] Definitions of evil vary, as does the analysis of its root motives and causes.[2] However elements that are commonly associated with evil involve unbalanced behavior involving expediency, selfishness, ignorance, or neglect.[3] In cultures with Manichaean and Abrahamic religious influence, evil is usually perceived as the dualistic antagonistic opposite of good, in which good should prevail and evil should be defeated.[4] In cultures with Buddhist spiritual influence, both good and evil are perceived as part of an antagonistic duality that itself must be overcome through achieving Śūnyatā meaning emptiness in the sense of recognition of good and evil being two opposing principles but not a reality, emptying the duality of them, and achieving a oneness.[4] The philosophical question of whether morality is absolute, relative, or illusory leads to questions about the nature of evil, with views falling into one of four opposed camps: moral absolutism, amoralism, moral relativism, and moral universalism. While the term is applied to events and conditions without agency, the forms of evil addressed in this article presume an evildoer or doers.- published: 05 Oct 2013

Universalism and Not Imputing Sins
Universalism and Not Imputing Sins
In last week's lesson we found doctrines in the Bible that make Universalism a very untenable if not heretical doctrine. Yet, there are passages in the Bible that seem as if God has given universal salvation to men. One of the passages that cause people to have universalist leanings is 2 Cor 5:19 describing how God reconciled the world to himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. Learn what 2 Corinthians 5:19 is teaching and the difference between the universal provision of salvation and the less than universal possession of it.
