The revolt had been a long time brewing. The rising voices of discontent. The anti-austerity protests. The steady rise of Eurosceptic parties.

Even so, the shock could not be disguised when a stridently anti-EU party topped the poll in France. Only a short while ago the far right National Front (FN) was placed on the extremist fringe of French politics.

The French Prime Minister Manuel Valls did not try and explain away the result. He said it was \

A US special operations mission intended to capture a terror suspect in Somalia ended when al Shabaab fighters began using children as human shields, according to a report by NBC News.

A team of Navy SEALs from Seal Team 6 landed on a beach near the southern Somali town of Barawe.

They took positions inside a compound where an al Shabaab warlord named Ikrima was located.

The Kenyan-born Ikrima, whose real name is Abdikadar Mohamed Abdikadar, was named by a Kenyan government intelligence document as coordinating various planned attacks against the East African nation.

The SEALs were spotted by a lone al Shabaab fighter and came under fire.

The al Shabaab fighters allegedly moved children out of the fortified compound to use them as human shields.

Unable to extract their target, the SEALs opted to withdraw.

A new video released by Islamist militants Boko Haram claims to show around 130 girls kidnapped from a school in Nigeria last month.

The group\'s leader, Abubakar Shekau, said they would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.

He said the girls had converted to Islam. The video, released on Monday, claims to show them praying.

Boko Haram abducted more than 200 girls in northern Nigeria on 14 April and threatened to sell them.

The BBC\'s John Simpson in the northern city of Maiduguri says Boko Haram\'s comments show signs that the group is willing to negotiate.

Three of the girls - wearing full-length cloaks - are shown speaking in the 17-minute video, obtained by French news agency AFP. Two girls say they were Christian and have converted to Islam, while the other says she is Muslim.

Thai Coup Leader Gen Prayuth Set For Royal Endorsement

Thailand\'s military leader is to receive royal endorsement at a ceremony in the capital, Bangkok, after taking power in a coup last week.

Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, who now leads a junta known as the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), is also expected to address the nation.

A new temporary constitution is set to be introduced.

The 86-year-old monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, is not expected to attend the ceremony.

The monarchy is highly respected and royal endorsement is seen as key to legitimising the takeover.

The military seized power in the South East Asian nation last week, saying it planned to return stability to Thailand.

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain\'s hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.

UKRAINE CRISIS - BILLIONAIRE Tycoon Petro Poroshenko WINS the UKRAINE ELECTIONS

Three months after former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych fled from the capital, Kiev, in the middle of an insurrection, 36 million Ukrainians were called to cast their vote for a new president on May 25. After a ballot that proved to be less violent than most expected, the results are indisputable: The majority of Ukrainians rallied behind one man, Petro Poroshenko, who won a clear victory with 54 percent of the votes, and now faces the arduous task of restoring security and economic stability in his country.

However, not everything has been perfect. Participation was extremely low in some of the eastern Ukrainian regions. In Donetsk and Luhansk, pro-separatist militias disrupted the ballot Had all eastern Ukrainians been able and willing to vote, Poroshenko\'s margin of victory

Yet the turnout of 55.3 percent was relatively respectable -- western European countries during their European Parliament elections on the same day. The fact that Poroshenko garnered votes than his closest rival, Yulia Tymoshenko, endows the newly elected president with a measure of legitimacy. of far-right movements in Ukraine, the rejection of corruption, and an indication that the electorate may have finally understood that economic and political stability can only be made by engaging both Russia and Europe. Indeed, the election results provide a scathing denial of Russian claims that Kiev has been overtaken by fascist forces. Moscow\'s narrative was aimed at unifying Russian-speaking populations who reject European far-right movements and hold on to such \

He said it was "more than just a news alert... it is a shock, an earthquake." It is all the more surprising when one remembers that France - along with Germany - is one of the principal architects of the European project. Now the FN's Marine Le Pen is claiming "a first step in a long march to liberty" away from the EU. Impact of jobs crisis So what has happened? The vote is, of course, in part a protest. The Socialist government is widely despised and unemployment remains stubbornly high. The French economy is stagnating. Marine Le Pen has cleverly tapped into the frustration with globalisation and job insecurity. She understands the fear of immigration, when nearly 26 million people are out of work in the EU. (It should also be pointed out that abstentions helped inflate the size of the FN victory.) Navy SEALs Somalia raid: Al Shabaab uses children as human shields
  • Order:
  • Duration: 0:50
  • Updated: 11 Nov 2013
Originally Published on October 10, 2013 A US special operations mission intended to capture a terror suspect in Somalia ended when al Shabaab fighters began using children as human shields, according to a report by NBC News. "While the operation did not result in Ikrima's capture," read a statement by Pentagon press secretary George Little, "U.S. military personnel conducted the operation with unparalleled precision and demonstrated that the United States can put direct pressure on al Shabaab leadership at any time of our choosing." The SEALs were members of the unit that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011. "After the past few years and the bin Laden raid, everyone thinks these operations are easy -- they're not," said a senior military official familiar with the operation, cited by NBC. "The area doesn't have the same support network for us as Afghanistan and Iraq."

The BBC's John Simpson in the northern city of Maiduguri says Boko Haram's comments show signs that the group is willing to negotiate. Three of the girls - wearing full-length cloaks - are shown speaking in the 17-minute video, obtained by French news agency AFP. Two girls say they were Christian and have converted to Islam, while the other says she is Muslim. "These girls, these girls you occupy yourselves with... we have indeed liberated them. These girls have become Muslims," Abubakar Shekau says in the video. It is thought the majority of the abducted girls are Christians, although there are a number of Muslims among them. Correspondents said the girls appeared calm and one said that they had not been harmed. There is no indication of when or where the video was taken, although the location appears to be rural. It is estimated to show about 130 girls - just under half of the 276 pupils abducted from their school in the northern state of Borno. Our correspondent says this could mean those abducted had been split into smaller groups to help avoid detection. Boko Haram had previously admitted to kidnapping the girls. The group, whose name means "Western education is forbidden," said they should not have been at school and should get married instead. Boko Haram has been engaged in a violent campaign against the Nigerian government since 2009. Earlier, the governor of Nigeria's Borno state said he had information on the whereabouts of the schoolgirls. Governor Kashim Shettima said he had passed reports of the sightings of the girls to the military for verification. He added that he did not think the girls had been taken across the border to Chad or Cameroon. The Nigerian government has faced heavy criticism of its response to the mass abduction but President Goodluck Jonathan said on Sunday that assistance from abroad had made him optimistic of finding the girls. The UK and US already have teams helping on the ground in Nigeria and an Israeli counter-terrorism team is also on its way to the country. Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande has offered to host a summit in Paris next Saturday with Nigeria and its neighbours focused on Boko Haram and the country's security challenges. US President Barack Obama has assured ally Japan that it is committed to the country's defence including the Senkaku Islands or the Diaoyu Islands as they are known in China, which are at the centre of a row with Beijing. They fall under a security treaty that commits the United States to act if Japan comes under attack. His comments came at the start of his eight day four-nation Asia trip. Thai Coup Leader Gen Prayuth Set For Royal Endorsement Thailand's military leader is to receive royal endorsement at a ceremony in the capital, Bangkok, after taking power in a coup last week. Confectionery tycoon Petro Poroshenko has claimed victory in Ukraine's presidential election. According to exit polls the man known as the "chocolate king" won more than 55% of the vote, giving him an absolute majority with no need for a second round runoff. Former boxer Vitaliy Klitschko also claimed to have been elected mayor of Kyiv in a separate poll. In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. UKRAINE CRISIS - BILLIONAIRE Tycoon Petro Poroshenko WINS the UKRAINE ELECTIONS Three months after former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych fled from the capital, Kiev, in the middle of an insurrection, 36 million Ukrainians were called to cast their vote for a new president on May 25. In Donetsk and Luhansk, pro-separatist militias disrupted the ballot Had all eastern Ukrainians been able and willing to vote, Poroshenko's margin of victory Yet the turnout of 55.3 percent was relatively respectable -- western European countries during their European Parliament elections on the same day. Moscow's narrative was aimed at unifying Russian-speaking populations who reject European far-right movements and hold on to such "foundational historical events" such as the battle of Stalingrad, western Ukrainians fought on their side back then. This strategy proved extremely effective in encouraging support from local populations for separatist movements in Crimea and the eastern Republics. analysis of the uprisings in the Maidan, originally initiated by left-wing pro-democracy activists, or the history of far-right minorities in Ukraine Those results prove how inaccurate Russian coverage of the events in Kiev has been over the last few months. It also shows how inappropriate Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech on March 18 in Kiev against "nationalists, neo-Nazis, Russophobes and anti-Semites" "pogroms and terror after an armed coup" was. The second lesson from the elections is the rejection of the old establishment and ruling parties corruption charges. Yulia Tymoshenko received only 13 percent of the votes, which represents a strong disavowal of her years in office. Even if the accusations against her for abuse of office when she signed a gas deal with Russia in 2009 were clearly politically motivated, she remains a significant political figure and a "shrewd businesswoman", who made a sudden fortune in shady energy contracts back in the 1990s. ukraine crisis poll election chocolate king president "prime minister" party media news report entertainment vote results "we the people" billionaire business man tycoon 2014 europe leader future politics focus group cyber "cyber attack" virus count "cyber security" security computer "computer virus" nwo "new world order" truth european russia russian war "war games" "world war 3" u.s. Now that the fear of fascism Putin said Russia would back results of vote, but cautioned Obama on continued mishandling of the crisis Ahead of contentious nationwide elections in Ukraine this weekend designed to pave the way for a new government in the politically fractured country, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday had strong words for western nations, including the United States, who he says backed the coup d'etat that has put the nation on the edge of all out civil war. Ukraine now is chaos, the country is sliding into chaos. Yanukovych agreed to do anything, whatever, had it all been done legally, we'd continue subsidising them, we'd keep gas prices low, we'd allocate the 15 billion we'd promised. Let us be frank, we're all grownups in the room, we're all smart and educated people. The West supported anti-constitutional coup d'état, not just by giving away cookies, but by giving political support, support in the media, using all sorts of tools. And are you blaming us? What we suggested was dialogue. We were denied. When I last came to Brussels we agreed that dialogue would continue but that was before the coup d'état.
