SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 Nothing builds confidence and gets a season back on track more than a win on the road, in front of a sell-out crowd and against star-studded opposition. That is precisely what the Warriors did, defeating the Storm 16-10 in front of a sold out AAMI Park crowd. The win was extra sweet for Warriors fullback Sam Tomkins, as it was the Englishman's first ever win over the Storm stars Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk after being forced to endure constant defeats to the Kangaroos trio at international level. Tomkins ran for 148 meters and went forward on countless occasions as the creative fullback continued to show signs of why the Warriors spent big on their new No.1. Leading 12-6, the visitors came back out after half-time into a purple onslaught as Storm flooded them with possession and looked almost certain to take the lead. However the Kiwi side held firm in the second half of a win Tomkins believes was a statement to the rest of the competition. "I think a lot of sides in the NRL see us as a side that will fall away and if they get us in an arm wrestle we will crack and fall away," said Tomkins. "That is a perception we want to change. "For us it is a massive win. We know we can get in a tough arm wrestle with one of the best teams in the competition and outdo them. I think some lads really stood up. "That is character, that is what wins you games and that's what wins you competitions." It has been a trying month for the Warriors with Friday night's win snapping a three-game losing streak. NRL 2014 Round 8 Highlights: Broncos Vs Rabbitohs
SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 South Sydney has snatched a 28-26 victory over the Broncos in controversial circumstances in a pulsating Anzac Day encounter in front of over 44,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium. With the scores locked-up at 26-all with two minutes remaining, a strip by Ben Hunt on Sam Burgess 35 metres out from the line handed Adam Reynolds a chance to snatch the lead and he did so in cool fashion despite a chorus of boos ringing around the ground in response to the harsh call against the home side. Regardless of the result, the match was thrilling right to the end and featured a spectacular 15th-minute try to Greg Inglis, beating multiple attempted tackles in a 90-metre solo effort that is sure to be a contender for try of the year. Souths were the first to cross the chalk after seven minutes when Apisai Koroisau ran onto a Greg Inglis offload after the Rabbitohs' fullback steamrolled his way through Brisbane's defensive line, enabling the young hooker to back-up Inglis's impressive work and dash the remaining 15 metres to slam the ball down next to the posts. Three minutes later a Lachlan Maranta mistake close to his line invited the Bunnies to attack Brisbane's line again. From the next set, an Adam Reynolds pin-point 'mini' bomb aimed towards the corner managed to pick out rookie winger Alex Johnston who planted the ball down despite attention from opposite number Daniel Vidot. Reynolds missed the sideline conversion to keep the score at 10-0. The Rabbitohs weren't done with their lightning start and soon stretched their lead out to 14-0 after a brilliant individual try from Greg Inglis. After gathering a Ben Barba chip kick from 10 metres out, Inglis initially beat four defenders in centre field, and then weaved his way towards the opposite touchline in a marauding run. From that point he found himself with 40 metres left to run and skipped past a desperate tackle from Dale Copley, pinned the ears back, and set course for the corner post, beating a final attempted tackle by Maranta. NRL 2014 Round 8 Highlights: Eels Vs Cowboys
SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 An enigmatic North Queensland Cowboys put on an attacking masterclass to bury the hapless Parramatta Eels 42-14 on Saturday night. The ANZAC tribute round has already treated rugby league fans to four of the most compelling games of the season, and the fifth was no exception -- just for a different reason. In perfect conditions for a high-scoring contest, the Cowboys got the ball rolling just five minutes in with one of the weirdest one-two plays you will see. Stuck flatfooted and out of options on the fifth tackle, Johnathan Thurston decided to switch the play with a pass to Michael Morgan, who put the ball to the boot back in the direction of his five-eighth, who beat a sluggish Tim Mannah to the loose ball to open the scoring for the hosts. In an opening 10 minutes owned by the home side, the Eels broke again under relentless goal-line pressure. Brent Tate took matters into his own hands, darting left from dummy-half and creating a hole that was filled by hardened Test prop Matt Scott. When over 100kg of big man hit the line just metres out the result was a formality, and the Cowboys were in again. Star Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne had a woeful opening half, typified by a comical fumble after the ball fell his way following a charge-down from Scott. A rout looked on the cards when the Cowboys capitalised on a dominant opening period with their third try in 11 minutes. In more goal-line brilliance -- this time off a scrum -- they emptied the right side, setting up a second-man play for Thurston to link up with Brent Tate, who sent Curtis Rona sprinting to the corner for the easiest of four pointers. Just as they looked to be coming up empty again on the goal-line, Parramatta threw caution to the wind and ran on the fifth tackle. A quick cut-out ball from Corey Norman found an overlap, with centre Will Hopoate squeezing a ball out to Ken Sio for the try. The pendulum of momentum had swung when Michael Morgan roosted his restart kick way over the deadball line and minutes later, a try saver from Semi Radradra denied an early double to young Rona. SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 Dodgy pacemakers and full-time deadlines be damned: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Clearly the Bulldogs are a fan of the old adage, much to the chagrin of any fans with questionable tickers and copywriters with match reports due on the siren, pulling home for yet another thrilling win as they downed an inspired Knights outfit 16-12 at ANZ Stadium. Despite a disjointed attacking performance and an opposition inspired by the presence of injured forward Alex McKinnon, the Bulldogs again kept their fans and coach Des Hasler on edge by pulling a fourth consecutive match from the fire, though this time the match-winning play came with the fat lady warming up the pipes rather than hitting her final notes. While a 72nd-minute try from Bulldogs prop Aiden Tolman ultimately proved the match winner, as in the previous four weeks the final seconds of the win were not without suspense nor controversy as the Knights rallied for one last assault on the competition leaders' line. Newcastle's final fling came off the back of a penalty awarded after centre Joey Leilua was ruled to have been forced into touch by a second effort and a melee erupted, but the Dogs held out to exact revenge over the side that knocked them out of the premiership race last September. Earlier Moses Mbye, a late call-up for centre Tim Lafai (concussion) almost kicked off his long-anticipated top-grade debut with a try in just his sixth minute of first-grade as he was held up over the line by desperate Knights defence. The visitors' relief at keeping the youngster out proved to be short lived, as winger Mitch Brown crossed just a minute later after a spectacular flying leap by Josh Reynolds. The plucky five-eighth claimed a bomb from halves partner Trent Hodkinson, before tapping the ball down to Josh Jackson, who showed good hands to send an unmarked Brown over in the right corner. It was the Dogs who controlled the tempo during opening quarter of the match through the in-form kicking games of their halves and a series of probing dummy half runs from rejuvenated skipper Michael Ennis. Yet it was the Knights who were next to get themselves across the line with 23 minutes gone, with a play deserving of more than just the regulation four points. Running the ball on the last from 30 metres, out the Knights caught the home side's defence napping through Jarrod Mullen, who found space behind the ruck before a series of quick hands and no-look passes from the next play gave winger James McManus a half chance in the right corner. Goosebumps across the flesh. Pride. Respect. Longing. Loss. But while most of us will shuffle away after the last note sounds to send the two-up pennies high, be with family and friends or find a quiet place to gather the thoughts, spare a thought for Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargeaves. In the few minutes before the traditional Roosters-Dragons Anzac Day clash, one of the toughest in the game is pulling himself together to play the toughest game of all. For Waerea-Hargeaves, the 60 seconds when the crowd of more than 38,000 falls into a deafening silence of respect and remembrance brings forth a flood of emotions that the bruising Kiwi prop struggles to contain. "I'm looking back and remembering all those moments, all the footage that I've watched over the past and all the stories that my dad and my family have spoken to me about when they go to war," says Waerea-Hargreaves when asked what is going through his head during those spine tingling pre-game moments. "It's tough to keep it in check, but I played that game for my dad and all the Diggers from the past -- it's very special for me." Waerea-Hargreaves comes from a proud military family, with father Wayne and cousin Jared Purcell having served with the New Zealand and Australian armies respectively. From Kosovo to Cambodia, Iraq to Somalia, if it's on the DEFAT Do-Not-Travel list Wayne Hargreaves has probably been there over the course of 20 years as a water engineer working with the New Zealand and US military as well as the UN. And it's the old man the Roosters bookend has at the forefront of his mind when he'd normally be focused on belting the opposite pack into submission. "I just have my dad in my head when the Last Post is playing. SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 Halfback Peter Wallace might be the co-captain at Penrith, but he's still unsure which of his new teammates are morning people. Considering they've played five of their seven games under the nose of that illuminating panther this year, we'll give him a pass. But with the Panthers due to embark on the longest road trip of any NRL team this season, Wallace expects to know a lot more about this improving squad on and off the field by the time they return. Penrith travel to Cronulla this week, visit Newcastle and Canberra over the following fortnight, and then end the month with a Round 11 bye. They host Parramatta in their Round 12 return to Sportingbet Stadium. "When you play away, it is good because you're all in the one place at the one time which you don't get very much when you're at home," Wallace said. "You're at training, but then everyone goes home or whatever. We're a new team, so it'd be good to spend a couple of weeks away with the boys. A bit of bonding [will] be good." Second-rower Elijah Taylor said he's looking forward to some quality time with his teammates, although nothing could compare to the chaotic away trips in his time with the Warriors. "Credit to our management, our coaching staff, we had a big off-season, we got away a couple of weekends together and as a team we got to know one another," he said. "But the away trips, I'm looking forward to them. We've only had one this year really. I'm used to flying everywhere every second weekend. When we play Parramatta, it's just down the road. It doesn't really feel like an away trip for me. "Back at the Warriors, an away trip was four days away from home. So we're pretty lucky here, Sydney-based club, games are just down the road." Wallace said the extra time as a squad would benefit an attack ranked second last in total points so far this season. They're also yet to record back-to-back victories in 2014. NRL 2014 Round 7 Highlights: Raiders Vs Storm
SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy says he's sick of NRL games being decided by controversial calls, as the rugby league gods delivered his side a dose of karma with a last-gasp 24-22 loss to Canberra. Raiders forward Paul Vaughan crossed in the 79th minute to level the scores and man-of-the-match Jarrod Croker kicked the conversion for the dramatic home side victory at Canberra Stadium. Up 22-18 in the 71st minute of the Sunday match, the Storm looked to have things wrapped up when winger Sisa Waqa appeared to cross for his second try. However, the on-field referee, with assistance from the touch judge, ruled that he bounced short of the line after a brilliant tackle from Croker - and there wasn't enough evidence for the video referee to overturn the decision. "I thought it was (on the line). It's just confusing," Bellamy said. The loss comes just six days after an officiating blunder gifted the Storm a miraculous win over St George Illawarra with a try the NRL later conceded shouldn't have been awarded as the final play-the-ball came after the fulltime siren. "Everyone is sick of games being decided on controversial calls," Bellamy said. "It's frustrating, frustrating for everyone." Bellamy said there was too much pressure on referees and touch judges to make on-field decisions. "Sometimes they can't see any better than us, and they've got to make a ruling," he said. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart opted not to give his take on the ruling, only saying his side had experienced their fair share of bad decisions recently. He instead praised their character to fight back from 10 points down midway through the second half to snap a six game losing streak at home. "It's good to get that monkey off our back and put our season back on track," captain Terry Campese added. Raiders fullback Anthony Milford was sensational, as was his opposite Billy Slater, who would've busted the game wide open if it wasn't for some desperate defence by Croker - who made three try-saving tackles. Storm forward Ryan Hinchliffe opened the scoring in the ninth minute after pouncing on a Cameron Smith grubber that had rebounded off the post. The Raiders struck back through centre Matt Allwood in the 15th minute but the Storm skipped away again with tries to Waqa and Mahe Fonua. In a bizarre late incident, Panthers second-rower Sika Manu accused Greg Bird of "grabbing my nuts", with replays backing the Penrith player's angry reaction without proving intent from the Titans co-captain, who was making a tackle around the waist. Bird also had a running battle with Panthers halfback Peter Wallace for most of the night. But in front of a healthy crowd of 9555 it was the home side who had the last laugh, reclaiming their spot in the top eight, with a penalty goal from five-eighth Jamie Soward in the 50th minute the only difference. The Panthers were in control from the outset, drawing first blood on a simple left to right shift in the seventh minute that ended with centre Dean Whare whizzing past opposite centre Maurice Blair. Jamie Soward added the extras from the sideline and the home side had the early 6-0 lead. Former Titan Jamal Idris clearly came out with a point to prove against his old team, making a number of incisive runs on drop passes on the left edge, while Wallace got some extra attention from Bird as he came up with a number of half-breaks on the right. The Panthers co-captain duly came up with a big blow in the 30th, having a major hand in his side's second try. In one of the more bizarre four-pointers you'd see this season, Wallace split the Gold Coast defence and offloaded to halves partner Jamie Soward, whose intended grubber for Jeremy Latimore was spilt -- first by Titans No.1 David Mead and then hooker Paul Carter -- before falling into the path of Matt Moylan to score. Soward again converted, and the Panthers had all the momentum at 12-0. But Carter -- who redeemed himself with a try-saving tackle on Kevin Kingston four minutes later - came up with the perfect inside ball for prop Ryan James to crash over the line for their first try in the 37th minute. Aidan Sezer's conversion halved the deficit to 12-6 and that's the way it stayed at the main break. SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 A crucial 8-0 period with Titans skipper Nate Myles in the sin bin has inspired Gold Coast to a 22-6 road win over the Wests Tigers on Sunday afternoon. But the courageous victory might have come at a price, with halfback Albert Kelly sent to hospital during the game for a possible leg fracture. With Kelly already on the sideline, the visitors were thrown in further disarray when Myles was binned for a professional foul on Martin Taupau in the 24th minute. The Tigers were controversially denied a try to centre Tim Simona in the ensuing set -- again by an obstruction call -- but the Titans held on and eventually outscored their opposition 8-0 despite being a man down. On another miserable afternoon at Leichhardt Oval, points were always going to be hard to come by in the wet conditions. So when Bodene Thompson was penalised for a shoulder charge on Aidan Sezer in the third minute, Gold Coast opted for a penalty shot, but missed. It took just four minutes for their next opportunity however, with Sezer taking full advantage of a jinking Kelly run to embarrass some arm-grabbing efforts in the middle of the park and charge through under the posts. The playmaker converted his own try and the Titans enjoyed the early 6-0 lead. Gold Coast tried to turn the screws over the next few sets as makeshift centre Dave Taylor threw a brave offload for a flying Anthony Don in the 13th, before Kelly intercepted and ran 50m in the 16th. But the turning point came when Kelly limped from the field after a heavy tackle from Adam Blair in the 23rd minute. In the following set, a Luke Brooks dummy opened the defence and should've ended in a supporting Martin Taupau going over the tryline, but the prop was held back by Myles. The home side almost cashed in on the extra man immediately after Myles went to the bin, going right and crossing through Simona. But referee Gerard Sutton ruled that decoy Thompson had impeded Sezer and video referee Steve Clark agreed. SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 The Raiders simply had no answers to a white-hot Manly side that exploded out of the blocks at Brookvale Oval on Sunday, notching seven converted tries in just over half an hour of play to blow Canberra off the park before closing the match out 54-18. The 8817 fans who braved the damp conditions were treated to an attacking masterclass from Sea Eagles halfback and Kangaroos utility incumbent Daly Cherry-Evans, who was devastating in his return from a week off with injury, having a hand in almost all his side's nine tries. Debutant playmaker Jack Littlejohn looked right at home with a clinical 40/20 and some high quality touches and winger Peta Hiku notched a first half hat-trick on his way to four for the afternoon. The first of those came in the second minute after a Jamie Lyon grubber down a short right-side troubled Raiders fullback Anthony Milford, who had to play and was bundled into touch to put Manly on the attack. Cherry-Evans floated a pinpoint cut-out pass over decoy runner Glenn Stewart and Lyon put Hiku into space. Lyon slotted the first of several sideline conversions. He scored himself when Glenn Stewart produced a pass most five-eighths would be happy with to put Cherry-Evans into space and with an array of support runners to choose from he drew Milford and put Lyon over under the posts. When new Rabbitohs signing Stewart went off early with an ankle injury, Jamie Buhrer ran straight through a gap off a Cherry-Evans short ball and drew the fullback to put support runner Brenton Lawrence over. Manly continued to cut the Raiders apart through the middle and out wide, with a Steve Matai line break in the 11th minute almost leading to points, but their next score followed a precision Littlejohn 40/20, which he then backed up with a great inside ball near the posts to send Anthony Watmough crashing over for a 24-0 lead after 15 minutes. Hiku got his second in the 24th minute when the defence rushed up on Cherry-Evans, who did well to get a quick ball to Lyon, whose classy bat-on to Hiku allowed the winger to steamroll Milford one-on-one to score in the corner. In-form fullback and Brookvale specialist Brett Stewart finally added a 2014 try to his 10 try assists just before the half-hour mark, when he backed up Cherry-Evans who himself did well to follow up some quality work from Justin Horo and Littlejohn. A series of short passes close to the line proved too tough for the Raiders to shut down. SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 The Bulldogs broke with the no-meat tradition on Good Friday, dining out on a brave but ultimately braised Rabbitohs outfit with a thrilling 15-14 win at ANZ Stadium. With 43,255 fans on the edge of their seats, Trent Hodkinson again proved himself the man for the occasion with a 78th-minute field goal after the Rabbits had threatened to turn on an Easter miracle of their own, leading for all but two minutes despite a dressing shed looking like a scene from M*A*S*H for much of the encounter. It was déjà vu for the Dogs, after Hodkinson booted a penalty goal and field goal to deliver them victory over the Warriors last week. Souths led the Bulldogs 8-0 at half-time and then 14-6 with 15 minutes remaining, but in the end succumbed to the fact they had to play more than half the match with just 16 barely fit men. Forwards Kyle Turner (concussion), Dave Tyrrell (head knock) and Joe Picker (ribs) all made brave comebacks despite being significantly worse for wear, while hooker Apisai Koroisau never returned from a shoulder injury sustained midway through the first half. It was the boot of Hodkinson that proved the difference with three from three off the tee, including two sideline conversions, as well as the 20-metre field goal that sealed the deal, as the Bulldogs overran the Rabbitohs with two second-half tries to wingers Mitch Brown and Corey Thompson. In a scrappy first half where both sides attack burnt like damp wood - plenty of smoke but little fire - errors and penalties flowed freely, with nine of each being recorded by the half-hour mark. Souths finally broke the monotony of attacking opportunites being squandered when they bit the bullet in the 31st minute and halfback Adam Reynolds knocked over a penalty from bang in front for yet another Bulldogs ruck infringement. Just minutes later Bulldogs second-rower Dale Finucane was placed on report for a lifting tackle that was deemed dangerous as the referees followed the NRL's mid-week edict to crack down on such tackles. From the following set Souths forward leader Sam Burgess proved too strong for Hodkinson and Sam Perrett from close to the line three minutes out from the break, barging over and sending the Rabbitohs into the break up 8-0. NRL 2014 Round 7 Highlights: Sharks Vs Roosters
SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 The Roosters have broken their three-game losing streak with a desperate 24-18 victory over a gallant Sharks side in front of a 12,163 people at Remondis Stadium on Saturday night. Not even the surprise return of skipper Paul Gallen was enough to stop Cronulla falling to their sixth loss in seven games, as Origin duo Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney -- plus gun winger Roger Tuivasa-Sheck -- led the Roosters to a much-needed victory. But it was the home side that drew first blood through a stunning piece of individual brilliance from centre Ricky Leutele, who will one day tell his grandkids that he once stood up the almighty Sonny Bill Williams. Receiving the ball on the halfway line, the fourth-year prop left the dual international clutching at air with a skip-and-go before stepping fullback Anthony Minichiello, wrong-footing Pearce, and then beating Aidan Guerra and Tuivasa-Sheck to the tryline. Fullback Michael Gordon added the extras for an early 6-0 lead and the home side were off to the perfect start. But it took the defending premiers just five minutes to respond through an attacking set that began with Tuivasa-Sheck at fullback. The Roosters needed just two power plays up the middle before the fullback-in-waiting isolated second-rower Boyd Cordner with Todd Carney to send the NSW back-rower over for a simple try. Maloney converted and the game was level at the quarter mark. But if Tuivasa-Sheck's first try assist was all textbook, then his second was all street play. A Todd Carney chip-and-chase that clean bowled Minichiello in the 23rd minute ended with the Kiwi prospect cleaning up 15m out from his own line, stepping past three defenders, before executing a 360 pirouette that would've earned a perfect score from an Olympic judge. From there it was all academic, offloading to a supporting Maloney who raced 50 metres untouched. NRL 2014 Round 6 Highlights: Storm Vs Dragons
SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/user/footytubenrl?sub_confirmation=1 WOW. That is how you would sum up Melbourne Storm's thrilling 28-24 come-from-behind victory over the Dragons at AAMI Park. Three tries in the final 13 minutes stole victory and ensured the Dragons 15 year drought in the southern state continued. Young Tonumaipea came up with the winning try after the final siren in incredible circumstances, as his desperate team produced a string of Hail Mary plays. Winger Sisa Waqa played a looping ball to Tohu Harris centre field at the 20-metre line, who linked with Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman before Tonumaipea dived across for the line for one of the most stunning finishes to an NRL game you could ever hope to see. Trailing 24-10 with 13 minutes left on the clock, this was a game Craig Bellamy's men had no right to win but they were ultimately the ones grinning as the drama settled, with Will Chambers scoring his second try and Cronk also crossing. The Dragons will be left to rue the one that well and truly got away and their third consecutive defeat will no doubt leave them scratching their heads the entire way home. They made much of the play throughout the first 67 minutes and came out breathing fire right from the outset. Two penalties and an error in the first five minutes for the home side had their much spoken about defence under pressure early. And within six minutes it failed that early test. It would be none other than Storm's former half Gareth Widdop to set up a clever move down the left. As Jason Nightingale looked to be heading out of play, his clever flick in-board to Dylan Farrell had the first try of the game and the visitors well on their way. It was a nervous opening 10 minutes by Melbourne that included three penalties, five missed tackles and just 34 per cent of possession.
