Tom or TOM may refer to:
Thomas Rangiwahia Ellison, also known as Tom Ellison or Tamati Erihana (c. 1867 – 2 October 1904) was a New Zealand rugby union player and lawyer. He led the first New Zealand representative rugby team organised by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU) on their 1893 tour of Australia. Ellison also played in the 1888–89 New Zealand Native football team on their epic 107-match tour, scoring 113 points, and 43 tries with the side.
Born in Otakou, Otago Heads, Ellison was educated at Te Aute College, where he was introduced to rugby. After moving to Wellington, Ellison played for the Poneke Football Club, and was selected to play for Wellington province. He was recruited into Joe Warbrick's privately organised Native football team in 1888, and continued to play for both Poneke and Wellington on his return from that tour. In 1892, he started to refine and popularise the wing-forward system of play, which was a vital element of New Zealand rugby's success until 1932. At the first NZRFU annual general meeting in 1893, he proposed that the playing colours of the New Zealand side should be predominantly black with a silver fern—a playing strip that would give the team their famous name of All Blacks. He retired from playing rugby after captaining the 1893 New Zealand side to New South Wales and Queensland, but continued in the sport as a coach and administrator. Ellison was the author of a coaching manual, The Art of Rugby Football, published in 1902.
A big band is a type of musical ensemble associated with playing jazz music and which became popular during the Swing Era from the early 1930s until the late 1940s. Big Bands evolved with the times and continue to today. A big band typically consists of approximately 12 to 25 musicians and contains saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. The terms jazz band, jazz ensemble, stage band, jazz orchestra, and dance band are also used to refer to this type of ensemble. This does not, however, mean that each one of these names is technically correct for naming a 'big band" specifically.
In contrast to smaller jazz combos, in which most of the music is improvised, or created spontaneously, music played by big bands is highly "arranged", or prepared in advance and notated on sheet music. The music is traditionally called 'charts'. Improvised solos may be played only when called for by the arranger.
There are two distinct periods in the history of popular bands. Beginning in the mid-1920s, big bands, then typically consisting of 10–25 pieces, came to dominate popular music. At that time they usually played a form of jazz that involved very little improvisation, which included a string section with violins, which was dropped after the introduction of swing in 1935. A few bands also had violas and cellos, usually one or two along with them. The dance form of jazz was characterized by a sweet and romantic melody. Orchestras tended to stick to the melody as it was written and vocals would be sung (often in a tenor voice) and in tune with the melody.
The Singing is the fourth and last novel in Alison Croggon's Pellinor series. The novel was completed in June 2007 and was published in Australia on 30 June 2008.
Direct quote from Alison Croggon:
"I'm pretty certain [the singing will] open in Innail (it's about time we went back there) and that there will be a travelling theatre troupe in there somewhere. I am planning to sit down and write the thing in the second half of next year - I haven't been contracted, but Walker is anxious to get a publication date, and would like to keep the series on track.
It has been described by a fan as:
"It is such an amazing tale of good versus evil. I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed The Lord of the Rings."
Maerad and Cadvan have returned to Innail. Maerad has realised that she has been carrying the runes of the Treesong (the magical, ancient song through which it is believed the Speech came into being) with her the whole time - on her lyre. Maerad believes it is imperative that she find her brother soon, as she senses he has a part to play in the Treesong as well. After spending time resting and catching up with old friends they attempt to leave, only to be forced back to discover themselves in a besieged Innail It is supposed to be the doing of the Landrost, a minor elidhu who is collaborating with Sharma/the Nameless One. None of the occupants are able to leave because of an unnatural snowstorm that brings extreme and fatal cold. Maerad is able to locate the Landrost's attacks, and the bards of Innail are able to hold it back. After witnessing much destruction and facing near-death, Maerad merges into her Elidhu being to destroy the Landrost She is able to strip the Landrost to almost nothing. She is saved by a combination of Arkan, the Winterking, taunting her, and Cadvan calling her her Truename, Elednor. Maerad is now also known as 'the Maid of Innail' and is bedridden for many days.

One of the great Big Band arrangements done by Don Menza for the Buddy Rich Big Band. This features one of the outstanding jazz musicians that I know of,Tom Ellison on tenor sax. Always plays with so much feeling and soul in his solo`s. This was from a concert I did at the Blue Rooster in Sarasota Florida taken on December 10,2013. This is a chart that Count Basie first played and he gave it to Buddy Rich when he got his New Swinging Big Band started back in 1966. The great Oliver Nelson composed and arranged this chart. As a band leader, I like to find these type of swinging modern charts and bring them back to life. With these excellent musicians of mine who can sight read these type of charts,I`m able to do them. This features first Tony Castellano on piano followed by Tom Parmerter on trumpet. Tom Ellison takes the wonderful tenor sax solo. The only recording of Buddy Rich doing this song is on his Swinging New Big Band cd as a bonus track recorded live at the Chez club in LA.So great to hear this chart again live after all of these years. Vivid as you are
You're taking things too far
I always thought
That you were in control
But no
Here is how it goes
I want everyone to know that
All it takes
Are one or two mistakes
That drive you mad
I have given everything I've got
I'll take it back
Looking out for no one
But yourself
It ain't that bad
The thing is I have grown
I don't need to take this
No more
Excuses that will
Only hunt you down
Here is how it goes
