Previously it was thought that energy is a continuous phenomenon. Its quantization was a conceptual revolution that can be compared to a sort of "Copernican revolution". Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck nacque a Kiel, Germania, il 23 aprile 1858. Suo padre era professore di Diritto Costituzionale presso l'Università di Kiel e poi a Göttingen. Planck studiò presso le Università di Monaco di Baviera e Berlino, dove ebbe come insegnanti Kirchhoff e Helmholtz, e consegui il dottorato di filosofia a Monaco di Baviera nel 1879. Fu Professore Associato di Fisica Teorica a Kiel fino al 1889, anno in cui Kirchhoff riuscì ad ottenergli l'incarico di professore all'Università di Berlino, dove rimase fino al suo pensionamento nel 1926. In seguito divenne Presidente della Kaiser Wilhelm Society per la promozione della Scienza, incarico che ricoprì fino al 1937. Fu nominato membro dell'Accademia Prussiana delle Scienze nel 1894 e segretario permanente nel 1912. All'inizio della sua carriera si interessò ai processi radiativi in termodinamica e mostrò che questi processi erano da considerarsi di natura elettromagnetica. Da questi studi giunse a risolvere il problema della radiazione emessa dal corpo nero, una superficie ideale che assorbe tutta l'energia incidente. Le osservazioni sperimentali sulla distribuzione dell'energia emessa da un corpo nero in funzione della temperatura erano in contrasto con le previsioni della fisica classica. Planck fu invece in grado di dedurre il rapporto tra l'energia e la frequenza della radiazione. In un articolo pubblicato nel 1900, annunciò come aveva derivato questo rapporto: sulla base dell'idea rivoluzionaria che l'energia venisse irraggiata non come ipotizzato dalla fisica classica, ossia sotto forma di onda continua, ma in quantità discrete, in "pacchetti", che il fisico battezzò "quanti".

Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Planck Planck was born in Kiel, Holstein, to Johann Julius Wilhelm Planck and his second wife, Emma Patzig. He was baptised with the name of Karl Ernst Ludwig Marx Planck; of his given names, Marx (a now obsolete variant of Markus or maybe simply an error for Max, which is actually short for Maximilian) was indicated as the primary name. However, by the age of ten he signed with the name Max and used this for the rest of his life. He was the 6th child in the family, though two of his siblings were from his father's first marriage. Among his earliest memories was the marching of Prussian and Austrian troops into Kiel during the Second Schleswig War in 1864. In 1867 the family moved to Munich, and Planck enrolled in the Maximilians gymnasium school, where he came under the tutelage of Hermann Müller, a mathematician who took an interest in the youth, and taught him astronomy and mechanics as well as mathematics. It was from Müller that Planck first learned the principle of conservation of energy. Planck graduated early, at age 17. This is how Planck first came in contact with the field of physics. Planck was gifted when it came to music. He took singing lessons and played piano, organ and cello, and composed songs and operas. However, instead of music he chose to study physics.
