Buster Keaton - Sherlock Jr. 1924
Sherlock, Jr. (1924) is an American silent comedy film directed by and starring Buster Keaton and written by Clyde Bruckman, Jean Havez and Joseph A. Mitchell. It features Kathryn McGuire, Joe Keaton and Ward Crane. In 1991, Sherlock, Jr. was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," and on June 14, 2000 the American Film Institute, as part of its AFI 100 Years... series, ranked the film as #62 in the list of the funniest films of all time (AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs). Keaton spent more time shooting this film than most of his others, due to the elaborate stunts and effects. Due to poor reception at previews, Keaton cut the film down a couple times. Thus, Sherlock, Jr. is shorter than his other features. Keaton was injured while filming the stunt in which he hangs from a water tower tube used for replenishing the steam locomotive's water supply. The water poured out and knocked him onto the track, severely fracturing his neck. It was not until the 1930s that a doctor discovered the healed break during a routine examination. At that point, Buster recalled having agonizing headaches for a few days following the accident. Keaton's Projectionist appears to walk into the movie screen, an early example of a film within a film. The scene shifted back and forth several times from the projectionist's booth to the movie. For the last shift, instead of the movie being projected onto the screen, there was a stage with live actors, designed to replicate the look of the movie. Therefore, Buster actually entered the stage, but created the illusion of joining the movie. Afterward, the scenery around him changes abruptly several times. In the 1940s, Keaton revealed that he and his cameraman had used surveyor's instruments to position him and the camera at exactly the right distances and positions to provide the illusion of continuity. The encounter with the traffic cop was filmed on Larchmont Blvd. near Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles. Directed by Buster Keaton Uncredited: Fatty Arbuckle Produced by Joseph M. Mt. Everest - Into the Silence (1924)
A look back into the past, before it was even known if a man could possibly even hope to be able to stand on the 'Roof of the World". See it how the 1924 British Everest Expedition saw it. It would be after this very expedition that the world would learn of the disappearance of esteemed climber George Leigh Mallory and his apprentice, young Andrew "Sandy" Irvine . Like the tragic fate that beset the British military explorer Robert Falcon Scott and his men in Antarctica, the loss and apparent deaths of Mallory and Irvine would lend itself to the end of the Age of Optimism, in what was the Golden Age of Exploration.- published: 13 Mar 2014

Isn't Life Wonderful 1924 D.W. Griffith Cult Classic , Full Film
Isn't Life Wonderful? (1924) is a silent film directed by D. W. Griffith for his company D. W. Griffith Productions, and distributed by United Artists. It was based on the novel by Geoffrey Moss and it went under the alternative title Dawn. Most of the scenes were filmed in Germany and Austria. Only one was filmed in New York at the studio. The film stars Carol Dempster and Neil Hamilton. The film was a failure at the box office, and led to Griffith leaving United Artists shortly after its run in theaters.[1] The film did receive some positive critical notices at the time, but its stock has risen considerably since; it has for some decades been considered one of Griffith's greatest films Directed by D.W. Erich von Stroheim: Greed (1924)
Breve Storia del Cinema - Gli anni '20 ad Hollywood: http://www.brevestoriadelcinema.org/13-1.html Greed is a 1924 American silent film written and directed by Erich von Stroheim and based on the 1899 novel McTeague by naturalist writer Frank Norris. It stars Gibson Gowland as Dr. John McTeague, ZaSu Pitts as his wife Trina Sieppe and Jean Hersholt as McTeague's friend and eventual enemy Marcus Schouler. The film tells the story of McTeague, a San Francisco dentist, who marries his best friend Marcus' girlfriend Trina. Shortly after their engagement, Trina wins a lottery prize of $5,000. Marcus jealously informs authorities that McTeague had been practicing dentistry without a license and McTeague and Trina become impoverished. While living in squalor, McTeague becomes a violent alcoholic and Trina becomes greedily obsessed with her winnings, refusing to spend any of it despite how poor she and her husband become. Eventually McTeague murders Trina for the money and flees to Death Valley. Marcus catches up to him there for the film's final sequence. Von Stroheim shot over 85 hours of footage and obsessed over accuracy during the filming. Two months were spent shooting in Death Valley for the film's final sequence and many of the cast and crew became ill. Greed was one of the few films of its time to be shot entirely on location. Von Stroheim used sophisticated filming techniques such as deep focus cinematography and montage editing. Von Stroheim considered the film a Greek tragedy in which environment and heredity controlled the characters' fates and reduced them to primitive "bête humaines" ("human beasts"). During the making of Greed, the production company went through several mergers and eventually became Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, putting Irving Thalberg in charge of the production. Thalberg had fired von Stroheim a few years earlier at Universal Pictures. Originally almost eight hours long, Greed was edited against von Stroheim's wishes to about two-and-a-half hours. The full-length version is lost. Only twelve people saw the full 42-reel version, some of whom called it the greatest film ever made. Von Stroheim called Greed his most fully realized work and was hurt both professionally and personally by the film's re-editing. The uncut version has been called the "holy grail" of film archivists, amid repeated false claims of the discovery of the missing footage. In 1999 Turner Entertainment created a four-hour version of Greed that used existing stills of cut scenes to reconstruct the director's version. Greed was a critical and financial failure upon its initial release, but as early as the 1950s it began to be regarded as one of the greatest films ever made; filmmakers and scholars praised it for its influence on subsequent films. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greed_%28film%29- published: 28 Dec 2013

1924 Winter Olympics - Figure Skating Sonja Henie and Gillis Grafstrom
....and more!!! A very RARE glimpse at the early days of Figure Skating. This is actually the official Figure skating film of the 1924 Winter Olympic Games from Chamonix, France. It was made by Jean de Rovera and is thought to be the first commercially available film of the Olympic Games. There's some speed skating to start and this is followed by Sonja Henie, Herma Plank-Szabo, Gillis Grafstrom, Willy Bockl, Helene Engelmann and Alfred Berger and Charles Sabouret who finished 9th in pairs at this event with Simone Sabouret. I'm not sure if they were married or siblings - probably the latter. It's brief I know and apart from the footage of Henie, which has been featured in various documentaries, the rest has been unseen for many years. I hope you enjoy this precious glimpse into the past.- published: 24 Nov 2009
