The Merindad de Uribe or Uribealdea is a historical subdivision of Biscay, Basque Country, Spain. Today, the "Uribe" is usually defined by subdivisions caused by the urban development of the Greater Bilbao conurbation. These are:
Additionally, Barakaldo is now considered to be part of Left Bank and a few rural municipalities of the southernmost tip of historical Uribe are grouped with other areas in Arratia-Nerbioi.
Uribe is also a Basque surname. Etyologically seems to read under the city/town but its meaning is not clear. Álvaro Uribe, the former president of Colombia, bears this surname. In Latin America, there are other branches of the family in Ecuador and Mexico.

Luis Uribe Orrego (August 13, 1847 - July 17, 1914) was a Vice-Admiral of the Chilean Navy and a hero of the War of the Pacific.
Luis Uribe was born in Copiapó, the son of Juan José Uribe and of Rosario Orrego. He joined the navy on August 20, 1858, at the age of 9 years old, and graduated from the naval academy on July 16, 1861 as an midshipman. His first post was on the "Esmeralda", where he travelled to the extreme south of Chile, to the Juan Fernández Islands and to Peru. Uribe was promoted to ensign (equivalent of army's Second Lieutenant) on 1869, and the next year participated on a scientific expedition to Easter Island, where they prepared a topographic study.
On 1872, he was sent as part of a naval mission to England, under command of Admiral José Anacleto Goñi, who was in charge of contracting the construction of 3 new ships. While there he met a Mrs. Newlove, a widow, of whom he fell in love. Admiral Goñi denied him permission to marry her, but he ignored the command and still went ahead with the wedding in 1874. As a result he was relieved of his duties and court-martialled. He was finally clear of all charges after being defended by his classmate and lawyer Arturo Prat. In 1875 he was in charge of a hydrographic expedition to the coasts of Aconcagua, work for which he received a prize at the International Exposition of Santiago of 1875. He also wrote a Treatise on Hydrography that became the study text for the naval academy.

La Isla de Gorea (en francés, Île de Gorée) es una isla ubicada en África, con una superficie de 17 hectáreas, se ubica frente a la costa del país a que pertenece, Senegal, se encuentra a tres kilómetros frente a Dakar, la capital. En 1978 fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.
Durante más de tres siglos fue el más importante mercado de esclavos destinado para aprovisionar de ellos a Estados Unidos de América, al Caribe y a Brasil, principalmente. Fue descubierta por portugueses en 1444, bajo cuya bandera en 1536 se construyó la primera Casa de esclavos. Al menos desde entonces y hasta 1848, año en que Francia abolió la esclavitud, en esta isla se estableció la base más activa del comercio de esclavos, siendo la casa que construyó un holandés en 1776, la que aún se conserva, por la Unesco, como museo.
Es imposible precisar actualmente los enormes costos que para las naciones africanas significó este comercio, se calcula que al menos veinte millones de hombres, mujeres y niños fueron secuestrados en sus aldeas, trasladados y vendidos a tratantes que se establecieron abiertamente en la isla de Gorea, aquí eran aprisionados en calabozos, eran encadenados como animales y colocados espalda con espalda, como sardinas enlatadas, para esperar a que fueran vendidos, antes de que decayeran físicamente y fueran sacados de ese lugar.
El diseño de la Casa de esclavos, como la que existe convertida en museo, incluía una sala para hombres, una para recuperar peso, una para mujeres, otra para mujeres jóvenes, una para niños; se tenía especial cuidado en que los llantos de los niños no pudieran ser escuchados por sus madres, para evitar que estas sufrieran y perjudicaran su estado de salud.
Para los efectos del mercado, las mujeres tenían un valor mayor que los hombres, siendo el factor determinante la salud, el busto y la dentadura, los niños eran evaluados por su dentadura y las condiciones en que se encontraban al momento de la transacción; carecían los niños de nombre individual y se les llamaba por las características de la dentición, los hombres deberían pesar cuando menos 60 kilos. Todos los esclavos eran exhibidos en las escalinatas exteriores de la Casa de los Esclavos, donde eran manipulados como animales para analizar y discutir el precio, en lo alto de las escalinatas se encuentra un balcón desde donde los mercaderes y tratantes ajustaban el precio.
Finalmente, eran llevados los esclavos de los calabozos al punto en que serían embarcados, el pasillo que los conducía era conocido como El lugar de donde no se regresa, no era muy ancho para facilitar el manejo de las personas y en la oscuridad del túnel, al final, se apreciaba la luz del sol y el mar, en este lugar era el último en que la familia podía verse, pues en lo sucesivo cada uno sería trasladado a diferentes lugares de América. Eran embarcados en botes para subirlos después a los barcos y los esclavistas frecuentemente utilizaban este momento para hacer limpieza y eliminar a los esclavos que estaban enfermos o no eran fácilmente comercializables, entonces los lanzaban al mar infestado de tiburones.

Firstly, the canal. Though considered to be the star attraction (thousands flock here to watch container ships passing through the locks) the wild landscapes it scythes through are an altogether more exciting prospect. Here you can hike volcanoes, zip-wire over forest canopies, raft down rapids and meet one of the country’s largest indigenous groups, the Kunas, who eke out simple, traditional lives on the sumptuous San Blas Islands.
The Caribbean coastline features another facet of Panamanian culture. Jamaicans and Barbadians, drafted in to build the canal, ended up settling here and an Afro-Caribbean vibe endures to this day. The nearby Bocas del Toro islands, meanwhile, are the definition of Caribbean island ideal with their palm-fringed beaches, limpid lagoons and sleepy eco-lodges.
The wildlife is also spectacular. Whale watching in the Golfo de Chiriquí is a must and you never forget scuba diving or snorkeling alongside turtles in the Coiba National Marine Park. Its birdlife surpasses neighbouring Costa Rica and the most treasured sightings are the iconic harpy eagle, Panama’s national bird, and the endangered great green macaw.
With so much natural beauty to imbibe, it is easy to overlook the bustling capital, Panama City. But don’t. A metropolis divided starkly between the past and present, it is a city where crumbling colonial buildings stand in the shadows of high-rise steel and glass towers. It feels a little bit like Miami and the locals certainly give their US counterparts a run for their money in the hedonism stakes. Come join the party.
