Ancient Greece was a Greek civilization belonging to a period of Greek history that lasted from the Archaic period[citation needed] of the 8th to 6th centuries BC to the end of antiquity (ca. 600 AD). Immediately following this period was the beginning of the Early Middle Ages and the Byzantine era.[1] Included in ancient Greece is the period of Classical Greece, which flourished during the 5th to 4th centuries BC. Classical Greece began with the repelling of a Persian invasion by Athenian leadership. Because of conquests by Alexander the Great, Hellenistic civilization flourished from Central Asia to the western end of the Mediterranean Sea. Classical Greek culture, especially philosophy, had a powerful influence on the Roman Empire, which carried a version of it to many parts of the Mediterranean region and Europe, for which reason Classical Greece is generally considered to be the seminal culture which provided the foundation of modern Western culture.

CC's Anastasia Bakogianni caught up with Constanze Güthenke, Associate Professor of Classics and Hellenic Studies at Princeton University (http://www.princeton.edu/classics/people/display_person.xml?netid=guthenke), during her visit to the UK. Constanze came to London to present a paper at the Encounters with Athens, Rome and Jerusalem: (Re)Visiting Sites of Textual Authority in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century conference organised by Professor Catherine Edwards at Birkbeck, University of London (1-2 July 2013). Constanze talks about her new book project Greek Lives: German Classical Scholarship and the Language of Attachment, 1790-1920. She explains that German classical scholarship became the dominant model for academic and archaeological investigations of ancient Greece and Rome during this period. She tells us how her comparative approach arose out of her own educational background which combines a thorough training in Classics, with German and Modern Greek Studies. Constance also talks about her interest in how academic disciplines are formed which is the research question that drives her current project. Secondary literature has become her primary source in her investigation of the German model. Her interest in the reception of the classical past in Modern Greece is reflected in her first monograph Placing Modern Greece. The Dynamics of Romantic Hellenism, 1770-1840 (Oxford University Press, 2008: http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199231850.do#.Ul-R1fBwbIU) that interrogated the formation of the modern state and its dialogue with classical literature. At the conference Constanze examined the German encounter with Modern Greece in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. German travellers and scholars came to the modern state seeking a connection to the classical past. The immediacy they sought was, however, complicated by the process of modernisation that they encountered. Their ambivalent response towards this modern reality found expression in their scholarly writings.

"Only once before in our history was there the promise of a brilliant scientific civilization. Beneficiary of the Ionian Awakening, it had its citadel at the Library of Alexandria, where 2,000 years ago the best minds of antiquity established the foundations for the systematic study of mathematics, physics, biology, astronomy, literature, geography and medicine. We build on those foundations still. The Library was constructed and supported by the Ptolemys, the Greek kings who inherited the Egyptian portion of the empire of Alexander the Great. From the time of its creation in the third century B.C. until its destruction seven centuries later, it was the brain and heart of the ancient world. The glory of the Alexandrian Library is a dim memory. Its last remnants were destroyed soon after Hypatia's death. It was as if the entire civilization had undergone some self-inflicted brain surgery, and most of its memories, discoveries, ideas and passions were extinguished irrevocably. The loss was incalculable. In some cases, we know only the tantalizing titles of the works that were destroyed. In most cases, we know neither the titles nor the authors. We do know that of the 123 plays of Sophocles in the Library, only seven survived. One of those seven is Oedipus Rex. Similar numbers apply to the works of Aeschylus and Euripides. It is a little as if the only surviving works of a man named William Shakespeare were Coriolanus and A Winter's Tale, but we had heard that he had written certain other plays, unknown to us but apparently prized in his time, works entitled Hamlet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet." -Carl Sagan My Homeric Cries: In Basel, I stood undaunted Yet solitary there — God have pity, And I cried out: Homer! The Ancients are Back! with Jon Solomon

Professor Jon Solomon of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (http://www.slcl.illinois.edu/people/josolomo) joins CC'S Anastasia Bakogianni to talk about the reception of ancient Greece and Rome in cinema. Jon explains his fascination with films about classical antiquity which led to the publication of his book The Ancient World in the Cinema (1977, rev. 2001) (http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=9780300083378). He tells us how attitudes towards classical reception have gradually changed in academia and how films about classical antiquity have come to play such an important role in scholarly debates. The most recent renaissance of films about 'the ancients' began twenty years earlier in the mid-1990s. Their popularity has continued unabated ever since with more films and TV series that ever about antiquity. Jon argues that as classicists and teachers we should engage with these popular receptions of our subject. They not only provide us with material for our classes, but they also allow us to think about our ancient sources from different angles. Jon is currently working on a new project to edit and translate Boccaccio's Genealogy of the Pagan Gods for Harvard University Press. The first volume was published in 2011 (http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674057104) and he is currently working on the next two. Jon's English translation of the Renaissance author's fifteen-book Latin treatise is the first of its kind. Boccaccio provides us with a different lens through which to re-examine our relationship with classical mythology, as well as offering us a spirited defence of the value of reading classical poetry that originated in the Christian world of the fourteenth century.
