Funchal (Portuguese pronunciation: [fũˈʃaɫ]) is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. The city has a population of 111,892 and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries.

The name Funchal, was applied by the first settlers that landed on its shores due to the abundance of wild fennel where, as tradition goes, the primitive burg was built. From the Portuguese word "funcho" (fennel) and the suffix "-al", to denote "a plantation of fennel":

"...Funchal, to whom the captain gave this name, because it was founded in a beautiful forested valley, full of fennel up to the sea..."

This settlement began around 1424, when the island was divided into two Captaincies, and the zones that would become the urbanized core of Funchal would be founded by João Gonçalves Zarco who settled there with members of his family. Owing to its geographic location, the site became an important maritime port, while its productive soils became a focus of new settlers. Its coastal position, the most productive on the island, quickly permitted Funchal to develop an urban core and surpass the populations of other settlements, which slowly gravitated around it.

Nuno Frederico Correia da Silva Lobato Markl (born 21 July 1971) is a Portuguese comedian, writer, radio host, television host and screenwriter. He was born in Lisbon. And Markl is a male name.

Nuno Markl is well known in Portugal for his radio series "O Homem que Mordeu o Cão" (The Man Who Bit The Dog). It started in 1997, when he joined Pedro Ribeiro, José Carlos Malato and Ana Lamy for the morning show at Rádio Comercial; in 2001, Malato and Lamy left, and were replaced by Maria de Vasconcelos. The radio series later spawned a TV show, and three books.

As of October 2008, Markl works for Antena 3, with his current shows being "São Coisas Que Acontecem", "Laboratolarilolela" (a showcase of lesser known Pimba artists and songs), and "Nuno & Nando" (with Fernando Alvim). Before "São Coisas Que Acontecem", he also ran "Há Vida em Markl" (based on a comic strip formerly published on Inimigo Público) and "O Livro dos Porquês" (where funny answers were given to mundane factoid questions). Now in Rádio Comercial he does a show called "Caderneta de Cromos" that talks about common stuff from the 70s and the 80s
