Economic inequality, also known as income inequality and wealth inequality, is the difference found in various measures of economic well-being among individuals in a group, among groups in a population, or among countries. Economists generally focus on economic disparity in three metrics: wealth, income, and consumption. The issue of economic inequality can be relevant to notions of equity, equality of outcome, and equality of opportunity. Some studies point to inequality as a growing social problem. Too much inequality can be destructive, because income inequality and wealth concentration can hinder long term growth.
Too much equality can also be destructive by decreasing the incentive for productivity and the desire to take risks and create wealth. There is ultimately a trade-off between equality and productivity. A central question in discussions about economic inequality is what constitutes an "optimal" level of economic inequality.
Economic inequality varies between societies, historical periods, economic structures and systems. The term can refer to cross sectional distribution of income or wealth at any particular period, or to the lifetime income and wealth over longer periods of time. There are various numerical indices for measuring economic inequality. A widely used one is the Gini coefficient, but there are also many other methods.
Wealth is the abundance of valuable resources or valuable material possessions. This includes the core meaning as held in the originating old English word weal, which is from an Indo-European word stem. An individual, community, region or country that possesses an abundance of such possessions or resources to the benefit of the common good is known as wealthy.
The modern concept of wealth is of significance in all areas of economics, and clearly so for growth economics and development economics yet the meaning of wealth is context-dependent. At the most general level, economists may define wealth as "anything of value" that captures both the subjective nature of the idea and the idea that it is not a fixed or static concept. Various definitions and concepts of wealth have been asserted by various individuals and in different contexts. Defining wealth can be a normative process with various ethical implications, since often wealth maximization is seen as a goal or is thought to be a normative principle of its own.
Crash Course (also known as Driving Academy) is a 1988 made for television teen film directed by Oz Scott.
Crash Course centers on a group of high schoolers in a driver’s education class; many for the second or third time. The recently divorced teacher, super-passive Larry Pearl, is on thin ice with the football fanatic principal, Principal Paulson, who is being pressured by the district superintendent to raise driver’s education completion rates or lose his coveted football program. With this in mind, Principal Paulson and his assistant, with a secret desire for his job, Abner Frasier, hire an outside driver’s education instructor with a very tough reputation, Edna Savage, aka E.W. Savage, who quickly takes control of the class.
The plot focuses mostly on the students and their interactions with their teachers and each other. In the beginning, Rico is the loner with just a few friends, Chadley is the bookish nerd with few friends who longs to be cool and also longs to be a part of Vanessa’s life who is the young, friendly and attractive girl who had to fake her mother’s signature on her driver’s education permission slip. Kichi is the hip-hop Asian kid who often raps what he has to say and constantly flirts with Maria, the rich foreign girl who thinks that the right-of-way on the roadways always goes to (insert awesomely fake foreign Latino accent) “my father’s limo”. Finally you have stereotypical football meathead J.J., who needs to pass his English exam to keep his eligibility and constantly asks out and gets rejected by Alice, the tomboy whose father owns “Santini & Son” Concrete Company. Alice is portrayed as being the “son” her father wanted.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, often abridged as Last Week Tonight, is an American late-night talk and news satire television program airing on Sundays on HBO in the United States and HBO Canada, and on Mondays (originally Tuesdays) on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom. The half-hour long show premiered on Sunday, April 27, 2014, and is hosted by comedian John Oliver. Last Week Tonight shares some similarities with Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where Oliver was previously featured as a correspondent and fill-in host, as it takes a satirical look at news, politics and current events on a weekly basis.
Oliver has said that he has full creative freedom, including free rein to criticize corporations. His initial contract with HBO was for two years with an option for extension. In February 2015, it was announced that the show has been renewed for two additional seasons of 35 episodes each. Oliver and HBO programming president Michael Lombardo have discussed extending the show from half an hour to a full hour and airing more than once a week after Oliver "gets his feet under him".

Inequality is a big, big subject. There's racial inequality, gender inequality, and lots and lots of other kinds of inequality. This is Econ, so we're going to talk about wealth inequality and income inequality. There's no question that economic inequality is real. But there is disagreement as to whether income inequality is a problem, and what can or should be done about it. *** Crash Course is on Patreon! Can We Fix The Wealth Gap ? 0.7% of the world's population own half of the world's wealth. Is this fair? Most economists and ordinary people think it is not. This video is NOT suggesting that we punish those who have worked hard to achieve success. It is trying to point out a major flaw in the system. If an entire student body fails a class, then something must be wrong. The teacher isn't doing their job. Ideally, you would have a few exceptional students with A's, the majority with B's and C's, and few at the bottom with D's and F's. The vast majority should not be suffering or failing. Wealth inequality: One of the biggest issues we face today and no one is talking about it. The top 1% of the population owns 40% of the country’s wealth. The bottom half only controls 2.5%! A CEO earns 400x what the average employee earns, which means that it takes an employee 50 days to earn what the CEO earns in 1 hour! Is there no alternative? Or can the...

This 80-minute documentary focuses on the growing "wealth gap" in America, as seen through the eyes of filmmaker Jamie Johnson, a 27-year-old heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune. Johnson, who cut his film teeth at NYU and made the Emmy®-nominated 2003 HBO documentary Born Rich, here sets his sights on exploring the political, moral and emotional rationale that enables a tiny percentage of Americans - the one percent - to control nearly half the wealth of the entire United States. The film Includes interviews with Nicole Buffett, Bill Gates Sr., Adnan Khashoggi, Milton Friedman, Robert Reich, Ralph Nader and other luminaries. http://www.theonepercentdocumentary.com/

In this hard-hitting, but humorous documentary Jamie Johnson exploring the riches. He began documenting Born Rich-a little further. A percentage refers to the tiny percentage of Americans, which is almost half the wealth of the USA. This wealth in the hands of so few people is to control a threat to our way of life. Johnson grabbed her story through personal interviews with Robert Reich, Adnan Khashoggi, Bill Gates Sr. and Steve Forbes. And he is not afraid to head with Milton Friedman, the economist who coined the term crush "domino effect". It also shows how the other half lives, with real-world examples of the wealth gap: it takes a visit from a rundown housing project in Chicago, walks around with a cab driver, and sees the human toll of the economy of unfair Florida sugar industr...

The gap between the poor and the super-rich is growing. The world's eight richest people have the same wealth as the poorest half of the entire world. That's according to a new report by Oxfam which describes this trend as obscene, unfair and grotesque. The eight men are mostly American, including Microsoft's Bill Gates, investor Warren Buffett, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. Oxfam says this economic inequality threatens to pull societies apart and undermine democracy. Its report says people have lost trust in their governments and are no longer willing to accept the status quo. The anti-poverty organisation suggests that may help explain Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election. And the UK's vote to leave the EU. So what needs to be done to reduce wealth inequality? ...

“When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, the black community owned less than one percent of the United States’ total wealth. More than 150 years later, that number has barely budged.” As Mehrsa Baradaran argues in her new book, The Color of Money, this absence of wealth isn’t just a failure to atone for oppression and exclusion imposed by slavery and Jim Crow, but the product of contemporary acts to maintain their legacy. Today, the racial wealth gap is animated by policies that build the wealth of those who already have it and sowing debt among those who don’t, such as fees and fines levied by municipal governments and the criminal justice system, which fall disproportionately on communities of color. This experience of exclusion is reinforced at the community level wher...

While income inequality is often talked about as the great divide, there is an even greater economic divide in this country – wealth inequality, also known as the “wealth gap.” The wealth of white households was 13 times the median wealth of black households in 2013, compared with eight times the wealth in 2010, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances. What will these disparities mean for minority communities in the United States? Beyond the gap in minority communities, the divide between working class whites and white intellectual elites is also widening. Some suggest that there are ways to close the wealth gap, including reforming policies in the 21st century workplace and promoting savings initiatives, similar to the Co...
