According to protesters, one person was killed but that has not been confirmed. The medical charity Medecins sans Frontières said about 40 people were treated for injuries, most of whom had been slightly hurt in a stampede as people panicked. The clashes are complicating international efforts to calm inter-religious violence in large landlocked state, where France has deployed 1,600 troops to protect civilians. Despite French pleas for the crowd to disperse, many among the capital's majority Christian population accuse the troops from neighbouring Chad of siding with Muslim rebels. One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force. The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Chadian peacekeepers were accused of standing aside. In the latest clash witnesses said they reacted to stones being thrown by firing into the air - and the crowd. In other developments, the European Union has banned the export of arms to the Central African Republic and mercenaries from being sent to the country. The incident reflected the growing complexity of the situation in the Central African Republic, a former French colony plunged into chaos last year after a coalition of mostly Muslim rebels ousted President Francois Bozize. They have since been forced out of power, but Christian and Muslim militias continue to battle for control. Human rights investigators said the March 29 incident began when Chadian national army soldiers entered Bangui in a convoy of several military pick-up trucks. They entered a crowded market where shoppers included women and children, and opened fire, a U.N. report said Friday. "As panic-stricken people fled in all directions, the soldiers allegedly continued firing indiscriminately," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N.'s office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. "Several sources told the investigating team that they believed the Chadian force had entered Bangui to extract remaining Chadians and other Muslim inhabitants in order to save them from further attacks by (Christian militias)," Colville said. The U.N. said the soldiers who were responsible for the Bangui attack were Chadian soldiers but not among those who are part of the African-led International Support Mission peacekeeping mission that's trying to stabilize the Central African Republic. "It seems they have gone straight back to Chad without being apprehended," Colville said of the attackers. About 850 Chadian soldiers are part of the 6,000-strong peacekeeping presence, but on Thursday, Chad's foreign ministry issued a statement saying the country planned to withdraw its troops from the force, according to CNN French affiliate BFMTV. "Despite the sacrifices we have made, Chad and Chadians have been targeted in a gratuitous and malicious campaign that blamed them for all the suffering in (Central African Republic)," said a statement from Chad's foreign ministry. Chadian soldiers killed in Central African Republic clash
Eight Chadian soldiers of the peacekeeping mission in Central African Republic (MISCA) were killed in the past two days, including six slain on Christmas day, local police reported on Thursday. At least 50 civilians have been killed in the clash this week in Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic and their bodies have been found, according to Red Cross sources. The Chadian soldiers died in attacks by anti-Balakas fighters, who have been fighting with ex-rebel Seleka for months since former president Francois Bozize was replaced by Michel Djotodia in March, Col. Christian Narkoyo, head of the mobile gendarmerie, told Xinhua on telephone. The pro-Bozize Christians of anti-Balakas accused Chadians of siding with Muslim-dominated Seleka, which was officially dissolved not long ago by Djotodia in a bid to replace the loose coalition of former rebels with a national army. Ex-Seleka fighters, some linked to looting, summary execution and other forms of violence, are still reportedly involved in ongoing fighting. This is the second time foreign soldiers have been killed this Month. Two French soldiers lost their lives days after France sent troops to Central African Republic to help restore peace and order on Dec. 5. French soldiers were accused of sympathizing with Christian fighters by Djotodia's government. The UN Security Council has authorized the intervention by French troops and MISCA after hundreds of people were reportedly killed in clashes between supporters of Bozize and ex-Seleka fighters, sparking fears of a repetition of the 1994 Rwanda massacre. CAR conflict Chadian troops 'kill eight' in Bangui - 30 March 2014
Chadian troops have killed eight people in the Central African Republic capital, Bangui, says the African Union force there says. The soldiers reportedly opened fire on residents of mainly Christian neighbourhoods in northern Bangui. One local journalist told the BBC the Chadians had been attacked by a Christian militia. The country has been hit by civil conflict since Seleka rebels ousted the president in March 2013. Chadian troops have been accused of supporting the rebels, who are mostly Muslims. The contingent involved in Sunday's incident had come to repatriate Chadians from the country. Despite the deployment of some 6,000 African Union and 2,000 French troops in the country, violence has continued unabated. On Friday a grenade attack on a funeral in Bangui was reported to have killed 11 people. Horrific attacks The conflict has taken on an increasingly sectarian nature, with UN human rights chief Navi Pillay warning last week that hatred between Christians and Muslims in CAR had reached a "terrifying level". There have been horrific attacks, including acts of cannibalism and children's heads being cut off. Around a quarter of the country's 4.6 million people have fled their homes. After the Seleka deposed President Francois Bozize and installed their leader Michel Djotodia as president, they were accused of targeting Christians. In January, Mr Djotodia was in turn forced to step down amid criticism he had not done enough to stem sectarian violence. Since then, Muslims have been singled out for attack, with thousands fleeing their homes, many to neighbouring countries such as Cameroon and Chad. Earlier this month UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon proposed the UN authorise a force of 12,000 peacekeeping troops for CAR. Chadian troops 'kill eight' in Bangui - 30 March
The conflict has taken on an increasingly sectarian nature, with UN human rights chief Navi Pillay warning last week that hatred between Christians and Muslims in CAR had reached a "terrifying level". Chad: Influx from Central African Republic
The conflict in Central African Republic receives far less media attention than Darfur, but the effects are much the same. In all, more than 50,000 refugees are sheltering in southern Chad. This influx has overwhelmed villages on the border. To maintain harmony, the UN refugee agency has initiated projects which help locals and refugees alike.- published: 10 Jun 2009
