New quake shakes Nicaragua; nation on alert | BREAKING NEWS 12 APRIL 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A magnitude-6.6 earthquake shook Nicaragua on Friday afternoon, sending people running frightened into the streets less than 24 hours after a magnitude-6.1 quake rattled the Central American country. There were no immediate reports of new casualties or serious damage, but the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was felt in El Salvador and neighboring Costa Rica. The new tremor, centered 34 miles (56 kilometers) south of the capital city of Managua, surprised people at restaurants and supermarkets, where the shelves swayed strongly, throwing many products to the ground. It also disrupted the water service in many towns around the capital, where people continued to feel aftershocks as the government deployed soldiers and police officers to oversee emergency response. Firefighters paid visits to villages south of Managua and reported seeing cracking in the walls of houses and other buildings. "There are a lot of homes that will have to be demolished completely," said Rosario Murillo, government spokeswoman and Nicaragua's first lady. Earlier, the government raised the number of people injured in the Thursday evening quake from 23 to 200. It also said that a 23-year-old woman had died of an apparent heart attack after the quake. No deaths had been reported as a result of Friday's shake. Although the magnitude of Friday's earthquake was higher, it struck much deeper, making it less likely to cause damage. In the capital city of Managua, 300 homes were damaged and at least 20 were destroyed by Thursday's quake, said one of the mayor's deputies, Fidel Moreno. Authorities ordered the demolition of two old buildings that had withstood the earthquake of 1972 that killed 10,000 people. Hospitals began discharging patients with minor illnesses so they could have beds available in the event of injuries from an aftershock or new quake. President Daniel Ortega said that he raised the country's alert level to red, meaning government officials were evacuating everyone at risk of harm from aftershocks or new quake. The alert also meant schools and businesses closed in the capital and in the northwestern city of Leon. There was much less traffic in the streets. Chinese company to build a $40 billion Nicaraguan canal
Originally published on December XX, 2013 Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's animated news graphics at http://newsdirect.nma.com.tw/Reuters.aspx Nicaragua is rapidly moving ahead with a plan to allow Chinese company HKND Group to build a huge canal connecting the country's Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The $40 billion Nicaraguan canal project is expected to begin construction by the end of 2014 and could be completed by 2020. Beginning at the Pacific coast port of Brito, ships will cross Lake Nicaragua, before snaking through the jungle towards the country's Caribbean lowlands and the town of Bluefields on the eastern Coast. The 286-kilometer-long canal will be more than three times the length of the Panama Canal. It needs to earn $1 billion annually to turn a profit, meaning it would have to immediately draw half of the Panama canal's current ship traffic. The Nicaraguan canal will measure 83 meters in width, 27.6 meters in depth and is designed for 400,000-ton-class vessels whereas the Panama Canal only allows vessels with a capacity below 150,000 tons. The Nicaraguan canal will accommodate large LNG carriers and oil tankers from the US and Venezuela heading toward China. The canal is expected to generate annual revenue of at least $5.5 billion, and could capture 4.5% of global cargo shipping traffic. The HKND Group will pay Nicaragua $10 million a year for 10 years and gradually transfer ownership to Nicaragua over a century. The project is said to be able to double Nicaragua's $10 billion GDP by 2018. The deal also allows the company to build tax-free side projects including ports on Nicaragua's Pacific and Atlantic coasts, an oil pipeline bisecting the country, two free-trade zones and a cargo railway and an international airport. However, environmental experts argue that the canal project could cause profound ecological damage to the country.- published: 24 Jan 2014

Nicaragua turns to alternative energy to stop dependancy on oil imports 2009 News
Windmills designed to generate power for future generations. Nicaragua needs to turn to alternative energy. The country has successfully put an end to rolling blackouts that frequently left the country without power for hours but the government is struggling to pay energy costs. Oil prices have peaked at more than $147 during the last year. Nearly 80 percent of the oil Nicaragua consumes is provided at a discount by Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez is a close ally of the Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega. Now energy-starved Nicaragua is turning to wind as it tries to reduce its dependency on oil-based power. In 2008 the country began operating 19 windmills. It s part of Nicaragua s efforts to reduce its dependence on oil-based energy to just 3 percent by 2013. The 126-metre 410-feet high windmills installed by Suzlon Energy Ltd. of Pune India were set up on the edge of Lake Nicaragua. They sit in the shadow of the twin volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas on the lake s Ometepe Island and have become a tourist attraction of sorts. The country has also turned to geothermal power from volcanoes hydroelectric power generated by rivers and sugarcane based ethanol. Those sources provide 34 percent of Nicaragua s energy. Construction Manager Jose Angel Prati Engineer is behind the idea but expresses concerns about the long term financing of the green policies. There is a business philosophy of renewable and green energy. But of course you also have to find a financial balance. Because you cannot keep the dream save the planet if you don t have good economic support. Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli says the $90 million project contributes to 6 percent of the country s total energy needs. Even if oil prices remained at current prices and even though we are producing oil from here to about 6 7 years we will not be using oil to generate energy. Rappaccioli says the project will save about $9 million a year in fuel costs at current prices. The lead developer on the operation is Arctas Capital Group LP of Houston Texas which says it is in advanced stages of development for another 40-megawatt installation.- published: 04 Nov 2013

Massive 8.2 earthquake off Chile coast sparks tsunami | BREAKING NEWS - 2 APRIL 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS A major earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami that hit the northern part of the country, but the government said there was no serious damage and no reports of deaths. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was shallow at 12.5 miles below the seabed and struck about 100 km northwest of the mining port of Iquique near the Peruvian border. The Chilean navy said the first tsunami wave had hit the coast within 45 minutes of the quake. Authorities evacuated part of the coast and a tsunami warning was issued for all of South and Central America's Pacific coast. Chile is the world's No. 1 copper producer but key mining firms said there was no serious damage to their operations. In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that devastated several coastal towns in central-south Chile, a disaster that killed 526 people. Chile's ONEMI emergency office said late on Tuesday that landslides were partially blocking some roads and highways, and local radio stations said power went out in Iquique, but the government said it had no reports of deaths or injuries. Iquique is a key copper exporting port, close to Chile's main copper mines. State-owned miner Codelco reported no harm to its workers or mines, and said its operations in northern Chile were normal. Mining company BHP Billiton said it had not received reports of damage to mines. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the coasts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua were also at risk. "An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," it said. Authorities in Peru started evacuating communities in the southern coastal region of Ica, RPP radio reported. Every day, 20,000 girls below age 18 give birth in developing countries. Nine in 10 of these births occur within marriage or a union. Girls under 15 account for 2 million of the annual total of 7.3 million new adolescent mothers each year. If current trends continue, the number of births to girls under 15 could rise to 3 million a year in 2030. The State of World Population 2013, published by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, on October 30, 2013, highlights the main challenges of adolescent pregnancy and its serious impacts on girls' education, health and long-term employment opportunities. The report also shows what can be done to curb this trend and protect girls' human rights and well-being. www.unfpa.org/swop- published: 30 Oct 2013

The Demographics Unit had dispatched plainclothes detectives to listen to conversations and build files on places frequented by Muslims, US media say. The squad had been the subject of two federal lawsuits in the past, and drew ire from civil rights groups. It is also said to have sowed Muslim mistrust for law enforcement. "This reform is a critical step forward in easing tensions between the police and the communities they serve, so that our cops and our citizens can help one another go after the real bad guys," the office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote in a statement. 'Psychological warfare' The decision to stop the programme was reportedly made by new Police Commissioner William Bratton, and is viewed as a moving away from past intelligence gathering practices instituted after the 9/11 attacks. The unit - in operation since 2003 and later renamed the Zone Assessment Unit - logged where Muslims worked, shopped, ate and prayed. "The Demographics Unit created psychological warfare in our community," Linda Sarsour of the Arab American Association of New York told the New York Times newspaper. "Those documents, they showed where we live," she added. "They were able to see their entire lives on those maps. And it completely messed with the psyche of the community." Ms Sarsour along with several advocates reportedly met Mr Bratton and other police officials last week to discuss the shutting down of the covert unit. The squad's detectives have since been reassigned, a police department spokesman said. The head of the New York Civil Liberties Union, Donna Lieberman, told the Associated Press the surveillance had harmed community relations. "We hope this means an end to the dragnet approach to policing... and a commitment to going after criminal suspicion, rather than innocent New Yorkers,'' she told AP. The storm is expected to hit the Cape York peninsula later on Friday, bringing very destructive winds. It was expected to bring damaging waves to some low-lying areas, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said, and heavy rain could cause flooding. It is the strongest storm to hit since Cyclone Yasi, which struck in 2011. Cyclone Ita, which is expected to make landfall on Friday evening local time (10 hours ahead of GMT), "poses a serious threat to communities along the far north Queensland coast", the BOM said in its latest statement. "It is expected to move in a general south-southwest direction and make landfall between Cape Melville and Cooktown this evening or tonight as a category 5 tropical cyclone with very destructive winds to 300km/h (186 miles/h) near the core and gales extending out to 200km from the centre." Winds were expected to gather strength during Friday as the cyclone approached, it said. Coastal residents were also warned of a "dangerous storm tide" as the cyclone crossed the coast. The cyclone was expected weaken over land overnight, but if it travelled south along the coast it could potentially bring destructive winds to the tourist hubs of Port Douglas and Cairns, the BOM said. On Thursday, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman urged people to be ready for the storm. Tsunami alert after 8.2 quake strikes off Chile | BREAKING NEWS - 2 APRIL 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS An earthquake of 8.2 magnitude has struck off northern Chile, triggering a tsunami alert for Latin America's Pacific coastline, the US Geological Survey says. It said the quake was very shallow, only 10km below the seabed, striking 86km (56 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique. There are reports of 2m (6ft) waves striking some of the Chilean coastline. Chilean authorities have ordered the speedy evacuation of coastal areas. There are some reports of landslides hitting highways and Chilean TV has broadcast pictures of traffic jams as people evacuate coastal areas. The Chilean interior ministry told the BBC that one of the main roads outside Iquique was cut off because of hillside debris on the road. The ministry says that partial landslides have also taken place between the towns of Putre and General Lagos. 'A big one' A warning from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (TWC) said that the coasts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua were all at risk of a tsunami. "Everyone along our coast should be alert and ready," Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa said on Twitter. The Chilean navy said some high waves had hit the coast within 45 minutes of the quake. "We have asked citizens to evacuate the entire coast... there is no serious damage to houses... there have been no people hurt," said Chilean home office minister Mahmud Aleuy. "An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicentre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," a TWC statement said. A British expatriate near the northern Chilean city of Antofagasta told the BBC that there had been several tremors since the last quarter of last year. "But this earthquake, even with the increased distance, seemed to last a lot longer," Patrick Moore said. "I was just sitting on my bed and normally these tremors using last at the very longest about 40 seconds - this one felt like it lasted about two minutes. "I knew it was bad so I immediately went online to see what had happened and saw a tsunami warning that's been put in place which confirmed my fears that it was a big one." Kurt Hertrampf, a hostel owner in Arica, told the BBC there was a big blackout in the town after the quake and he was surprised the telephone line was still working. Chile is one of the most seismically active countries in the world.
