GANESH CHATURTHI Voice-Akanksha Singh Editer-Jitendra Kumar Jitu GANESH CHATURTHI Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is one of the important Hindu festivals celebrated throughout India with a great devotion. This day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesh is the symbol of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on Shukla Chaturthi of the Hindu month of Bhadra (generally falls between August and September). This festival is celebrated by Hindus with a great enthusiasm. People bring idols of Lord Ganesh to their homes and do worship. The duration of this festival varies from 1 day to 11 days, depending on the place and tradition. On the last day of the festival the idols are taken out in a colorful and musical procession and immersed traditionally in water. As per Hindu mythology Lord Ganesh is considered as "Vigana Harta" (one who removes obstacles) and "Buddhi Pradaayaka" (one who grants intelligence). Fried Modak - Sweet Coconut Dumpling - Indian Vegetarian Sweet Dessert Recipe. Chef Ruchi Bharani teaches you to make Modak which is offered to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Puja and also considered as Ganesh Ji's favorite. Learn how to make simple to cook homemade recipe - Modak. Ingredients: 1 & 1/2 cup Wheat Flour 2 tbsp Semolina (Rava / Sooji) Salt 1 & 1/2 tbsp Clarified Butter (Ghee) 1/2 tsp Cardamom Powder 1 tbsp Roasted Poppy Seeds (Khas Khas) 1 tbsp chopped Cashew Nuts 1 tbsp chopped Almonds 1 cup Grated Fresh Coconut 1 cup chopped Jaggery Oil Method: Take wheat flour, salt, semolina, ghee, water in a bowl and start kneading the dough very well Keep the dough to rest for about 10 -- 15 mins Meanwhile heat ghee in a pan and add grated coconut to the heated ghee Cook the grated coconut for a minute and add the jaggery Cook this till the jaggery melts Turn off the flame and add the cardamom powder, roasted poppy, almond flakes, chopped cashew nuts and mix everything well Remove the filling onto a plate and let it cool completely Take small portions from the dough and make flat round Apply ghee to the rolling board and rolling pin and start rolling the roti into soft small rounds Cut it with a ring to get a perfect shape and equal size Take the small roti and put about 1 tbsp of the filling Pinch the edges of the roti, bring the edges together, seal and close it so that while frying them no oil goes in Heat oil in a pan and put the modaks for frying in medium hot oil Fry and cook them in medium flame till its golden brown in color. Many artists, industries, and businesses survive on this mega-event. Ganesh Festival also provides a stage for budding artists to present their art to the public. In Maharashtra, not only Hindus but many other religions also participate in the celebration like Muslims, Jains, Christian and others. In Mangalore, there is a belief that the eldest son of the home should be present during pooja. In 1893, Lokmanya Tilak transformed the annual domestic festival into a large, well-organized public event. Tilak recognized the wide appeal of the deity Ganesha as "the god for everybody", and popularized Ganesh Chaturthi as a national festival in order "to bridge the gap between Brahmins and 'non-Brahmins' and find a context in which to build a new grassroots unity between them", and generate nationalistic fervour among people in Maharashtra against the British colonial rule. Through Google Glass I was able to share my experience with my friends and family who were thousands of miles away. Ganesh Visarjan or Anant Chaturdashi is the last day of the annual Ganesh Festival celebrated in India. After 10 days of celebrations and worship, the Ganesh idols (The Elephant headed God) are immersed in water. This video is an edited version of the footage and images I captured through Google Glass. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and by Hindus in the United States, Canada, Mauritius,Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Fiji, Trinidad & Toba The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon). The date usually falls between 20 August and 20 September. The festival lasts for 10 or 12 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. This festival is observed in the lunar month of bhadrapada shukla paksha chathurthi madhyahana vyapini purvabhadra. If Chaturthi prevails on both days, the first day should be observed. Even if chaturthi prevails for the complete duration of madhyahana on the second day, if it prevails on the previous day's madhyahana period even for one ghatika (24 minutes), the previous day should be observed. Two to three weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi, artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated and depict Lord Ganesh in vivid poses. The size of these statues may vary from 3/4 of an inch to over 70 feet. The tallest Ganesha Idol made which stood 117 feet tall was situated in the city of Visakhapatnam in 2012. Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of these Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures mandapas (pandals) in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. Ganesh Chaturthi 2013 is being celebrated at Mumbai with great devotion. The festival of God with elephant head, Lord Ganesha begins on 9th September this year. Ganesha Chaturthi, the great Ganesha festival, also known as 'Vinayak Chaturthi' or 'Vinayaka Chavithi' is celebrated by Hindus around the world as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is observed during the Hindu month of Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September) and the grandest and most elaborate of them, especially in the western India state of Maharashtra, lasts for 10 days, ending on the day of 'Ananta Chaturdashi'. The mythological basis of the celebration is found in the Puranas. Goddess Parvati, while taking a bath, wanted somebody to guard from outside. She got the idea of making an idol out of the sweat that came from her body. She placed the idol outside. The idol did not even let her husband enter. Shankar became furious and instantly severed the head of the idol. Parvati finished her bath and came out. She explained to her husband the reason for placing the idol before the door. The idol was her creation. In fact the idol was her son ("manas putra"), and consequently also Shankar's son. Shankar felt sorry for what he had done. His servant Gan was standing nearby. Shankar ordered him to go and bring the head of the first living being he would meet. The servant saw an elephant, and he at once cut his head and took it to Shankar. Shankar joined the elephant's head to the body of Parvati's son. "Gaj" means elephant and "anan" means head, so Parvati's son became known as "Gajanan". Shankar made him the deity of his armies and thus his name became Ganesh.
