Plant ID: Claret Ash (Fraxinus 'Raywood')
Plant ID: Claret Ash (Fraxinus 'Raywood') Genus: Fraxinus Species: angustifolia 'Raywood' Family: OLEACEAE Common name: Claret Ash Plant type: Deciduous Origin: Adelaide Australia as a seeded variant. Habit/Form: The Claret Ash is a cultivar of the Caucasian Ash (Fraxinus oxycarpa). The Caucasian Ash is usually classified as a subspecies of the Narrow-leafed Ash (Fraxinus angustifolia). The Caucasian Ash is usually listed as: Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa. The Narrow-leafed Ash is a medium-sized deciduous tree, 20-30m. The cultivar variation was originally discovered in South Australia; the first specimen was planted in Adelaide. The Claret Ash is an upright, stretching/ascending, branched tree, single trunked, 15-20m, branches can be brittle or breaks easy, with a narrow dome, light, wispy, body and habit when young, aging into a full body of branches and medium dome, 10-12m wide dome. Can be a bit twisty or "V" shaped, but some branches can also extend at 60degree angles from the trunk. With a full body some foliage (branchlets and leaflets) will hang, creates a nice canopy. The branchlets have olive-green bark with characteristic large, dark brown/brown-black buds that look like felt-fabric. As the tree ages the bark becomes textured/rough grey, light-grey, can be knobby, a bit cracked or scarred. A notable pretty and balanced classy leaf shape that can turn rich/deep purple and claret red. Enjoys the sun but temperate/cool climate for best autumn foliage ...

American Fringe Tree - Chionanthus virginicus
Chionanthus virginicus or American Fringe Tree is a member of the Olive family, Oleaceae, one of over a hundred species in the genus. The genus name comes from the Greek, chion for 'snow' and anthos for flower. Fringe Trees are native to the eastern half of North America, from New Jersey south to Florida and west to Texas. They are found in the wild along stream banks and on the borders of swamps. They are extremely adaptable as regards site and conditions, but prefer a well-drained but moist acid high-humus soil. Light shade or full sun is just fine, although I have seen one or two growing under Oaks and Tulip Poplars, and they flowered reliably. They are reputed to be pollution tolerant, but on that point I will not stake my reputation. There is pollution and there is POLLUTION, in my opinion, and where the line that divides tolerant and intolerant depends on whether you live in Chester, PA or Chester, CT. The main display for the American Fringe tree happens in early June here in Connecticut, lasting for about three weeks, if the weather permits. Too hot or too much rain, and the flowers will either wilt or get knocked off the tree. The white frilly flowers shimmer in the slightest breeze, and quake with the commerce of bees, who seem to like the nectar. The medium green leaf with a lighter underside change to a nice bright yellow in autumn, so there is a second season of interest for this plant. Fringe Tree is a small flowering tree, topping out at about twenty feet ...
