Scotland's Defence Keith Brown trounces Ming Campbell on Daily Politics
Keith Brown, A Falklands veteran, trounces Ming Campbell in debate on Scotland's armed Forces after Philip Hammond's hit and run attack on Scotland's capacity to defend itself. As far as I know, Ming never served in the armed forces, but his connection to them and the British Establishment opposed to Scotland's independence could lie in his marriage to Elspeth, Lady Grant-Suttie, daughter of Major General Roy Urquhart. His arguments, such as they were, seemed to rely on defence -as-job-creation scheme and his blind belief that young Scots wouldn't want to serve in a Scottish Regiment defending Scotland. He was also gratuitously offensive to Scots in suggesting that a Scottish defence force would be no more than a militia. Tell that to the marines, Ming. In fact, you just did- to a real soldier and a marine - Keith Brown.- published: 08 Oct 2013

Scotland doesn't appear to exist for these five people - or for Daily Politics - or for the BBC!
Scotland doesn't appear to exist for these five people - or for Daily Politics - or for the BBC!
There is only one Daily Politics programme on BBC, and it purports to address the whole of the UK. There is a Sunday Politics and a Sunday Politics Scotland, from the same Andrew Neil stable, and there is a Newsnight and a Newsnight Scotland, to the all-too evident frustration of Jeremy Paxman. Under normal circumstance, one would therefore expect the Daily Politics to reflect Scottish affairs regularly, in proportion to population at least, and to pick up on Scottish stories of special interest to Scotland and the UK as a whole. After all, the first B in BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation! But we are most certainly not in normal circumstance -- we are living in perhaps a uniquely challenging period of history for the integrity of Britain - i.e. UK - as a political entity. Scotland is 348 days away from a referendum that will determine, not only the future of Scotland but of the United Kingdom, and which will have major implications for the EU, for Scandinavia and for US/UK NATO strategy. A YES vote will effectively end UK, the British Empire and quite possibly spell the end of the UK nuclear deterrent. THE DAILY POLITICS 4th October 2013 Today's Daily Politics addressed the impact of tuition fees on UK universities and students. I repeat - on UK universities and students. This was evidenced by the presence of Dr. Wendy Piatt of The Russell Group ("Our universities are to be found in all four nations and in every major city of the UK"), Nicola Dandridge of Universities UK ("Universities UK has offices in Edinburgh (Universities Scotland") and Toni Pearce of the National Union of Students ("We are a confederation of 600 students' unions, amounting to more than 95% of all higher and further education unions in the UK") One of the great policy divides, reflecting widely different social values and priorities of two nations growing increasingly further apart -- Scotland and England -- is tuition fees and education policy. 1. There are no tuition fees in Scotland. 2. There will be no tuition fees in a devolved Scotland while the SNP is in government. 3. It is almost a negligible possibility that there could ever be tuition fees in an independent Scotland, regardless of which party or coalition governed. (The likelihood of a Tory Government regaining power in independent Scotland with a policy of tuition fees is zero.) 4. Free education in Scotland poses major problems for the UK Government and impacts on the EU and the world -- the world comes to Scotland to be educated. Despite this, the Daily Politics managed an entire 14 minutes discussion, (preceded by a report) chaired by Jo Coburn, without once mentioning Scotland (except for a fleeting mention of "their English members" at 1m30s mark) despite the presence of three representatives whose organisations and roles purport to have a UK-wide remit, and who have Scottish universities and students as members. There are only two credible explanations for this extraordinary omission - The BBC, the Daily Politics - and the participants and organisations they represent - regard Scotland as a marginal region somewhere north of the Watford gap which merits no real attention whatsoever. or To discuss the reality of the situation would have pointed up one important aspect of the widening gulf between Scotland and England and would have assisted the cause of a YES vote. If this is the contempt in which Scotland is held before the 2014 referendum, one can imagine all to clearly the utter contempt in which it would be held after a No vote. Douglas Alexander on Sunday Politics Scotland - young voters and 'more powers after No'
The evasiveness of Alexander on the 'more powers after No vote' issue underlines the stark truth. Scotland will get nothing after a No vote - it will be lucky to hold what it has. Devo Zero or Devo Minus. The Scottish Parliament exists only by the grace and favour of the sovereign UK Parliament under the Scotland Act, and its limited powers are in the gift of Westminster. They can be amended, curtailed or withdrawn at any time by the Westminster UK government. Scottish MPs can vote against this but have not got the power to block it, given the massive disparity in their numbers versus rUK MPs. The Scottish Government was open to a second question in the 2014 referendum, offering not just a binary choice between full independence and status quo, but a question on more powers within the UK. Civic Scotland was highly vocal in support of a second question. The second question was effectively vetoed by David Cameron and the Better Together Parties, and their negotiator, Michal Moore, was mandated to treat this as a deal breaker in the Edinburgh Agreement negotiations. The reason was that if a second question was offered and proved decisively to be the preferred option, the UK Government would be under major pressure to deliver more powers -- and they had -- and have - no intention of doing so. Scottish Labour, Scottish Tories and Scottish LibDems can have their little think tanks, commissions, etc. under various exciting and pompous titles, they can pass resolutions at Scottish party conferences, they can make recommendations to their London party masters, they might even conceivably reach a core consensus -- but they cannot deliver such powers. Only the Westminster parties can decide whether or not to include all or any of these recommendations in their 2015 general election manifestos -- and they won't, because to do so would be electoral suicide, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and God's gift to UKIP.- published: 26 Jan 2014

Road to Damascus a short film by Roxana Vilk
This film is one of three shorts I made during a week in Beirut in May 2011. The films were commissioned by Reel Festivals and Creative Scotland and the remit was make a series of short films "inspired by" the festival of poets. It was an amazing week, it's not every day that you get to meet poets from Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Scotland.
We were also meant to go to Damascus but as the political situation worsened that leg of the festival was cancelled. However, I still wanted to reflect the current situation in one of the films, so I interviewed one of the Syrian poets about his dreams. That was the starting point for this film.
All three films were shot in the space of six days. I filmed it on a Canon EOS 7D, with a Rhode SVM Mic attached to it and also recorded seperate sound on a Zoom H2 mic.
I then came back home to sunny Scotland and collaborated with my usual suspects, the gorgeous Maryam Ghorbankarimi on editing and of course music and sound design by the talented Pete the Beat you can check more of his superb music & sound design here http://web.mac.com/petevilk/petevilk/Home.html
I'd like to get more funding to go back to Lebanon
(and hopefully Syria) and continue filming with the poets, I feel there are many more stories to tell, and also continue my collaboration with the wonderful Reel Festivals. check them out here, they are pretty amazing folk http://www.reelfestivals.org/
There will also be some shorts I'll make of the fantastic Scottish poets too, coming soon..
Produced, Directed and Filmed by Roxana Vilk
Executive Produced by GOL Productions & Reel Festivals
Edited by Maryam Ghorbankarimi
Sound Design and Music by Peter Vilk
Production Assistant Stefanie Van De Peer
Filmed on location in Beirut 2011, with a Canon EOS 7D
and film sound recorded on a Zoom H2 mic and Rhode SVM Mic ( attached to the camera)
Commissioned by Reel Festivals 2011, Creative Scotland and Scottish Poetry Library and Firefly International.

The New Ten Commandments (Chapter One)
This is my contribution to the feature documentary 'The New Ten Commandments' and covers The Right to Freedom of Assembly...one of the basic human rights laid out in the 1948 declaration this film celebrated.
We follow Scotland’s self-proclaimed National Standard Bearer, Peter Dow, as he prepares for a very confrontational day of protest. Peter cuts a curious figure with his pseudo military uniform and inflammatory placard declaring his political beliefs. His target this time is the Queen as she opens the Scottish parliament. His mission is to see her kicked out of the country. Peter’s story is very much the archetype of the ‘little man’ versus the might of the establishment.
Just how will this one-man Scottish Republican army fair on the day of the protest? Will he be able to avoid arrest and get his message across to the masses, and more importantly, the Queen?
'The New Ten Commandments' is a uniquely Scottish documentary that brings together Oscar, Turner prize and Bafta winners to look at Scotland through the prism of human rights.
Marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, filmmakers and artists such as Tilda Swinton, Irvine Welsh and Douglas Gordon each tackle a 'new commandment'.
Exploring such issues as torture, slavery, or the freedoms of thought and assembly, the resulting film is a powerful, passionate and surprisingly humorous artistic collaboration that gives intimate meaning to human rights in Scotland.
