With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometres (700,000 sq mi), Libya is the third largest country in Africa by area, and the 17th largest in the world. The largest city, Tripoli, is home to 1.7 million of Libya's 6.4 million people. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan and Cyrenaica.
As a result of the Libyan civil war, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, which had at that time been in existence for 34 years, collapsed and Libya entered a period of governance by a transitional administration called the National Transitional Council. The NTC has stated its intention to oversee the first phase of a transition to constitutional democracy, after which it claims it will dissolve in favor of a representative legislature.
I visited the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Leptis Magna in Libya in November 2004. This was one of the great cities of the Roman world.

The area of North Africa which has been known as Libya since 1911 was under Roman domination between 146 BC and 670 AD. The Latin name Libya at the time referred to the continent of Africa in general. What is now coastal Libya was known as Tripolitania and Pentapolis, divided between the Africa province in the west and Creta et Cyrenaica in the east. In 296 AD, the Emperor Diocletian separated the administration of Crete from Cyrenaica and in the latter formed the new provinces of "Upper Libya" and "Lower Libya", using the term Libya as a political State for the first time in history. This article is part of a series about the History of Libya and it is related to the Roman domination of the territory now called Republic of Libya.
After the final conquest and destruction of Carthage in 146 BC, northwestern Africa went under Roman rule and, shortly thereafter, the coastal area of what is now western Libya was established as a province under the name of Tripolitania with Leptis Magna capital and the major trading port in the region.
In 96 BC Rome peacefully obtained Cyrenaica (left as inheritance by the king Ptolemy Apion) with the so-called sovereign Pentapolis, formed by the cities of Cyrene (near the modern village of Shahat), its port of Apollonia, Arsinoe (Tocra), Berenice (near modern Benghazi) and Barce (Marj), that will be transformed into a Roman province a couple of decades later in 74 BC. The Roman advance southward, however, was stopped by the Garamantes.

Dr Anna Leone is a reader in Durham University's archaeology department.
One of Anna's primary research focuses is the end of the pagan religious tradition and the dismantling of its material form in North Africa (modern Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya) from the 4th to the 6th centuries AD. This research considers how urban communities changed, why some traditions were lost and some others continued, and whether these carried the same value and meaning from one era to the next.
Dr Leone is interested in recording the neglected early Islamic archaeology of North Africa and hopes to research the routes by which Islamic culture and architecture spread across the region in the First Millenium AD.

What is happening lads and lasses and welcome back to another Rome Total War 2 Online Battle. Today we have the small Greek state Rhodos face off against Libya.
Build Up (Please read before watching)
After the destruction of Carthage in 146BC the remaining North Western Africans formed a province known as Libya - which was under Rome rule. The pro Roman Libyans have decided they want to campaign to gain more land, more gold and more blood. Their eyes are set on the small Greek island of Rhodos to seize for themselves. Rhodos is a major sea port and controls the transport of grain within the region and thus is a great asset to any faction. Shortly after hearing the rumors of the Libyan conquest the Rhodians sent multiple envoys to the Libyans to discuss terms and to avoid a war. They never returned.
Libya sent officials to Rhodos to discuss negotiations. It was agreed there would be no war. Even though the Libyans gave their word the Rhodian people were divided, to trust the Libyans or not? That was the question on everyone’s mind. All members of society from the common slave to the consul of Rhodos they all feared the wrath of Libya.
The Libyans never planned to have peace with the Rhodians, they simply wanted more time to build an army to crush the small Greek state. In Rhodos it was decided to strike first and strike hard in the heart of the Libyans. And so they did. They set sail for Libya.
Upon the Rodians arrival the Libyans were shocked. This small Greek state has caught Libya off guard and set foot on their homeland. The Rhodians marched through villages and cities causing destruction and havoc among the Libyan population only to be met by a quickly formed Libyan army filled with mobs and retired veteran soldiers. Who were eager to remove these Greek swine from their land.
The battle is set. The heat of the sun scorches the sand they walk on, removes any moisture from their mouths and cooks the very amour they wear. Both armies, both factions, both countrymen are ready to fight to the death.

The old town contains a souk that was almost fully abandoned following the Great Revolution as private trading was then forbidden but when the law was abolished in 1988 it once again sprang to life. Modern Tripoli is undergoing constant development. Contemporary architecture is everywhere with skyscrapers that contain offices and apartments that have been built on the periphery of the city. Around seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilisation located on the edge of the Sahara.

In the old town, there are more than 700 historic monuments which include 200 palaces, a colourful variety of buildings and numerous mosques.Among shoreline lava rock is the entrance to the Ghar El-Kebir, a collection of sandstone grottos. During Roman times, thousands of slaves were forced to bring building material for Carthage and El Djem from subterranean shafts. In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town’s Archaeological Museum there is a fantastic range of mosaics, predominantly from Punic and Roman excavations. Gabes is an oasis town which overflows with luxuriant floral splendour. By horse and carriage visitors can travel through one of the most beautiful maritime oases in Tunisia where, under 500,000 date palms, tobacco, henna, pumpkins, apricots and bananas thrive. The focal point of important caravan routes and trading centre for goods from Libya and Black Africa, Medenine is a very charming and lively city. Its reinforced honeycomb-shaped caves were the extraordinary-looking buildings that many will recall from the film ‘Star Wars’. The Sahara is the largest desert on earth, with different landscapes such as rock deserts, salt deserts and serene oases. Kebili is located on the edge of a huge salt lake and is a typical desert village with a green oasis and Artesian springs which provide water for its fruit and vegetable gardens. Nefta is also a green paradise in the desert, an oasis town that boasts no less than 152 Artesian wells. Dougga contains Tunisia’s most important ruins which nestle in the hills among shimmering olive trees and poppy fields. Endless deserts and fertile oases, busy towns and isolated mountain regions, Roman temples and Muslim mosques: Tunisia is tempting!

The Libyan area of the Sahara fascinates with its varied landscapes of lakes set amid desert dunes, ancient towns built of mud, camps with straw-covered circular huts, prehistoric rock paintings and amazing multi-shaped stone formations. For centuries, Ghadames, an oasis town. has been the junction of several caravan routes and thanks to the Mare Spring it has benefitted from a good supply of water. The houses were small but beautifully decorated and red-framed mirrors assist in the illumination of the main room. The uppermost floors were for women only and they could spend their day unveiled. Ancient Garma was once the capital of the Garamante Realm, one of the most powerful Berber realms in North Africa and the Sahara. Greek and Roman historians wrote much of the mighty tribe that lived in desert which at the height of its power controlled neighbouring tribes and among its arsenal included horse drawn chariots. The discovery of the Akakus rock paintings in 1850 was made by German explorer and scientist, Heinrich Barth. Protected by huge rocks and hidden in a tangled labyrinth of canyons, the rock paintings remained undiscovered for thousands of years. Nestling among the huge sand dunes of the Libyan Sahara is one of the most striking natural wonders on Earth, the Mandara Lakes. Some of the 11 lakes have dried out, such as that of the Mandara while others, like the Am Alma, are at their most impressive. Each lake is surrounded by a green belt in which reed and date palms create what is tantamount to being a biblical ambience. The Sahara, although scorching hot and untamed by Man, has shared with us its remarkable and memorable natural wonders!

LIBYA, NEW TRAVEL AGENCIES SPOT, WHILE TOUR OPERATOR ARE SILENT ABOUT THE GENOCIDE IN BANI WALID - (Eng + Ita text)
Libya today, new travel agencies top spot, while tour operator are silent about the tragedy of Bani Walid.
Bani Walid is not fallen yet and is resisting to the al-Qaeda and NTC NATO-backed milicias.
NTC mercenaries, after incessantly bombarded the city during the day, only hitting civilian targets, are going night time into Bani Walid, they intrude into civil houses, one after the other, they catch and arrest all man and young leds to be deported to Misrata and Benghazi prisons, where the people of Bani Walid disappear.
We are facing a clear action of ethnic cleaning, this is a genocide under the supervision of USA & NATO, the "world champions in human-rights destruction's wars".
***
ITALIANO

Assaraya Alhmara Museum, Tripoli, Libya - Assaraya Alhamra, "The Red Castle" or "The Red Fort" was painted red after the Spanish invasions in 1510 AD. Digging along an adjacent road revealed that the fort was built on top of an ancient Roman fortified camp. The building was established by the Phoenicians, who later abandoned the city after they established the nearby Carthage. A road once passed through the castle and was adorned with statues on both sides, which gave the museum an unique outdoor department. The castle was built to defend the city, it continued to be the centre of Tripoli's power right up to the 20th century.

After the Romans' descendants' return in 1911, the Italian converted a section of the castle, that was originally used as an ammunition storehouse, into Libya's first museum in 1919, to house some of the countless archaeological artifacts scattered across Libya since prehistoric times. By 1930s, it was named the Classical Museum - in reference to the classical Greco-Roman period. After the British occupied Libya during the Second War, the museum grew to occupy the entire complex and became known as The Libyan Museum in 1948, with the four wings: Prehistory - Ancient Libyan Tribes (the Berbers: Garamentes, Tuareg, etc.) - Libyan-Punic-Greco-Roman-Byzantine Traditions - Natural History
After Gaddafi's September Revolution, in 1969, a new wing was added, The People's Era Wing, to document the Libyan struggle for independence. and then later a war museum, known as The Conflict Museum. In 1982, in a joint venture with the UNISCO, the museum was further developed to its current state and became known as Assaraya Alhmara museum, which reopened its doors to the public in 1988. The museum occupies 10,000 square meters and is widely recognised as one of the most important and richest museums in the world; owing to its unique collection of original items spanning all periods of human's civilisation on this planet, right from the stone age and the prehistoric civilisations of the great Sahara desert to the medieval periods and the present day. Libya is rich in archaeology, with most of its prehistoric secrets still buried under the desert's sand and beneath the sea's water, for future generations to rediscover and bring to life once more.

Roman Libya ROMAN EMPIRE | HISTORY of ROME
Roman Libya ROMAN EMPIRE | HISTORY of ROME

IN PERIL**LEPTIS MAGNA Libya's forgotten Ancient Roman city & World Heritage Site
LEPTIS MAGNA Libya's forgotten Ancient Roman city and World Heritage Site is now in Peril.
- Founded by the Phoenicians as early as the 7th century BC, it was empty until almost a millennium later when, under the rule of Septimius Severus during the Roman Empire, Leptis enjoyed its golden age. It was a city of 80,000 people and the Theatre could fit 3,000. Founded on a part of the Libyan coastline that formed a natural harbour, Leptis Magna grew to become the capital for the Roman Empire in Africa. It was the place of EXPORT of LIVE LIONS which would be shipped to the Roman Colloseum.

Urban archaeology in Libya: Romans, Christians & early Islam

Rome Total War 2: Online Battle #008 Rhodos VS Libya

Travel video about destination Tripoli in Libya.
Tripoli is the capital of the desert state of Libya. The old town is known as the Medina and with its narrow lanes and squat buildings it is a combination of Arabian, North African and Mediterranean cultures. The joie de vivre of the local people is obvious and music and dance are part of their daily life. In antiquity the city was called Oea that was one of the three cities of Tripolitania and in Roman times this section of the coast contained the trading towns of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Since 1963 Tripoli has been the capital of the Great Socialist Libyan-Arab People’s Republic.

VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

Travel video about destination Tunisia.
Tunis is a North African city with a long history. After the Hasfides and Osmans, the Spanish Moors came but then had to give way to French colonial rule until present day Independence.
