Influence of the British Empire on the territories which now form Nigeria began with prohibition of slave trade to British subjects in 1807. The resulting collapse of African slave trade led to the decline and eventual collapse of the Oyo Empire. British influence in the Niger area increased gradually over the 19th century, but Britain did not effectively occupy the area until 1885, and then under pressure of competition from France and Germany. The colonial period proper in Nigeria lasted from 1900 to 1960. In 1900, the Niger Coast Protectorate and some territories of the Royal Niger Company were united to form the Southern Nigeria Protectorate, while other Royal Niger Company territories became the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. In 1914, the Northern and Southern Nigeria Protectorates were unified into the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria while maintaining considerable regional autonomy among the three major regions. Progressive constitutions after World War II provided for increasing representation and electoral government by Nigerians. In October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence.

This is a historical movie by Kola Oyewo. It is about the attempts of specific yoruba towns to rid themselves of the excesses of their Ibadan overlords. Brief history: Most yoruba country prior to mid 19th century was controlled by the Alafin who was the head of Oyo Empire. According to Samuel Johnson in "The History of Yorubas" at the peak of its power, Oyo empire stretched from west of River Niger to "as far as Ashanti and included the Gas of Accra.." In the 19th Century however, Old Oyo was sacked by the Fulanis and citizens of Oyo spread across Yoruba country and finally settled on Egba farm later called Ibadan. It is from here that the Yoruba put up a fierce battle against the Fulanis and stopped their progression into the rest of Yoruba country. If Ibadan became the center of Yoruba power against external aggression, it also developed an aggressive control of other yoruba towns. Kola Oyewo in this movie shows how these towns challenged the Ibadans and fought for their independence. Enjoy.

LOCATION: Things fall apart, by chinua Achebe, takes place in Nigeria, located in Western Africa. It borders the Gulf of Guinea, between Benin and Cameroon. It's Capital is Abuja. ETHNIC GROUPS: Nigeria has more than 374 ethnic groups. These include Hausa and Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, Ijaw, Kanuri, Ibibio, and Tiv. In the 1950s, each ethnic group maintained their own region of land. LANGUAGES: There are around 521 languages in Nigeria alone, 510 remaining alive, 2 being second languages, and 9 being extinct. Its official language is English, the lingua franca, which was acquired post-colonization by the British. Some ethnic groups communicate with their own native language since English isn't their mother tongue, but as it is a worldwide language, it's educationally the easiest form of communication, and so it's used most often. RELIGION: Nigeria has many different religions, some of which are predominant certain areas. The majority of Christians lie in the south, whereas more Muslims live in the north. Indigenous, native religions that believe in spirits and multiple deities are scattered throughout, influence some of the Abrahamic religions with unorthodox beliefs. HIERARCHY: In Nigerian society, age determines the level of respect you receive from your community. The older you are, the more confirmed wisdom you carry, therefore you're more respected. Elders are almost always immensely revered, with their needs and desires taken into high account. As for where you are in society, it's what you make of your position that earns you the great respect. Nigerian culture takes the effort you put into taking care of yourself and family very seriously. FAMILY: Social recognition is easily achieved through extended families. The honor of the family lies within each member's actions, where they're all able to rely on each other. Care and love are powerful Nigerian values. NATIONAL PRIDE: Nigerian pride is also valued. Being the country with the largest African population, Nigeria is considered a super power among other African countries. With their rich resources and vast oil production industry, Nigeria has a strong influence on its neighboring countries. ETIQUETTE: There are very specific forms of etiquette. The most common greeting form there, is the handshake. Men sometimes place their left hands on the other person's shoulder whilst shaking their hand. Rushing is considered rude Nigerians wait for women to extend their hand first.Close friends and family members often kiss and hug when meeting. When addressing people, their title is first said then their surname. With friends, this is much more casual. When greeting someone who is obviously much older, it is a sign of respect and deference to bow the head. If invited to dinner at someone's home then bring fruit, nuts or chocolates for the host. Gifts should be given using the right hand only or both hands. Never use the left hand only. Gifts from a man to a woman must be said to come from the man's mother, wife, sister, or other female relative, never from the man himself. Gifts are not always opened when received. THE PAST: In the time setting of Things Fall Apart. Nigeria was inhabited by large centralized kingdoms, and then smaller chiefdoms, which are also referred to as "Stateless societies." The largest kingdom was the Yoruba Oyo Empire. It was so large that it contains many diverse, yet similar dialects widely known as Yoruba. Another smaller kingdom east of the Oyo empire is the Edo Kingdom of Benin. The two kingdoms were in contact for centuries, leading to many different cultural similarities despite languages difference. Benin royalty claimed relation to Oyo royalty. The north contained several different Hausa States. They spoke an Afro-Asiatic Language, which has many similarities in north and north east African, and Middle Eastern languages. Rulers were often Muslim, but many followed pagan traditions The Borno Kingdom was located on the north east side of Lake Chad and then relocated under rule or the Sefawa Dynasty to northeastern Nigeria. Hausa states were conquered by Fulani, who declared holy war on non-Muslims. They established Sokoto Caliphate, raiding other regions. They then became a dominate influence after the fall of the Oyo empire. In Yorùbá religion, Sàngó is one of the most popular "Orisha". He was a strong ruler and a notable magician. Sango was the third king of the Oyo Kingdom. He succeeded Ajaka, son of Oranmiyan who appears to have been a weak ruler. His symbol is a double-headed axe, which represents swift and balanced justice. He is the owner of Bata ( double-headed drums), as well as the Arts of Music, Dance and Entertainment in the Yoruba Culture. In the Lukumí (Olokun mi which means "my dear one") religion of the Caribbean, Sango is considered the center point of the religion as he represents the Oyo people of West Africa. Sango had three wives; Oshun, (a river goddess) was his favorite because of her excellent cooking, Oba (another river goddess) offered Sango her ear to eat. He scorned her and she became image the Oba River, which merges with the Oshun River to form dangerous rapids. Lastly, Oya (Sango's third wife) was a crafty woman who stole the secret of Sango's powerful magic. Oba was Sango's first and legitimate wife, Oshun; his second wife, and Oya; his third wife, whom he made his queen. Oshun played a trick on Oba, out of jealousy. She deceived Oba that if she can cut a piece of her ear and offer it to Sango as part of his meal, he would love her the more. Oba, excited by this information, ran home to prepare Shango's "amala", his favorite meal. She sliced off her ear and stirred it into Sango's food. While Sango was eating, he saw the ear in the food and was infuriated thinking that Oba was trying to poison him. Sango drove her from his house and Oba ran out crying. She fell to the ground and turned into a river which is still being worshipped till date. She became the patron of matrimony (as "Orisha") and it is believed that she destroys marriages that abuse either partner. Historically, Sango brought prosperity to the Oyo Empire during his reign. He is associated with the sacred animal, the ram, and the colors of red and white. Sango is venerated in Haiti, as a god of thunder and weather; in Brazil, he is known as Xangô; in Umbanda, as the very powerful loa Nago Shango; in Trinidad as Shango god of Thunder, drumming and dance ; and in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela -- the Santeria equivalent of St. Barbara, he is known as Changó. Sango displayed his magical powers by directing lightning unto his own household killing his wives and children. He got angry and entered the ground in Ira by himself after the incidence; he was deified as the god of thunder and lightning. Sango as purpoted did not hang himself. Sango's followers went to another village to acquire magical powers and returned furiously to destroy the enemies of Sango in old Oyo.

Dr. Beko Kuti has this to say---Long before 1914 when Nigeria was amalgamated, the present space was not a void. People, empires and modes of production existed. The far North was ruled by Hausa Habes which was the home of many tribes, Hausa Magajiya, Abyssinian or of coptic stock. From 900 to 1500 AD. The Hausaland was besieged by political forces from Bornu, the Berbes, Tuyaregs and Arabs. The most formidable was the 1804 Jihad which swept the Habeland, imposed an oligarchy, seized the people and the land until the advent of British rule. The Yorubaland had the Oyo empire which triumphed until about 200 years ago, we also have the Bachama, Birom, Angas, Tiv, Kaje, Nupe, Ijaw, Igbo and numerous others. The merging of the Southern and Northern protectorates in 1914 was accidental so also was the name, Nigeria given to its people. It is important to say that British rule was not forged on negotiations with Nigerians, but negotiations with ethnic nationalities. So also there was no "Nigerian position," but ethnic nationality positions. The 1960 independence, to our knowledge, was preceded by a curious finding conducted by Henry Willink supported by Gordon Hardow, Philip Mason, and JB Shearer which compiled a report on July 30 1958 now known as the Willink Commission of Enquiry. I advise the senators to read carefully the various positions of nationalities visited by the British agents in compiling their reports. It is of note that every nationality in the space called Nigeria had a position and there was not and will never be a 'Nigerian position' except that imposed by the few people in power (www.nigerdeltacongress.com).

SANGO ,by birth, he was named Tella among other names as Ayi Legbe Orun, somebody greets the mother inside the belly; Arabambi, everybody stayed together to support the birth; Afonja contracted word from Afa ko ja meaning not easy to separate, the baby was covered with red cloth in order to cut the umbilical cord; Sango, a being with supernatural strength. He married to five women, Osun, who turned in to water in Osogbo; Oya, who turned to Igala in Ile ra; Oba, who disappeared in Odo Oba, Awa and Gambiolu. Sango was a strong warrior becoming a symbol of power and truth, serving as the supreme judge in the Oyo Empire and being the final court. His OSE, representing two axes, was a symbol of justice. Being the king of Justice and not understood by his people, he decided to hang himself in a tree called Igba, but his friend Aladekun discouraged him to proceed. By this decision he became OBA KOSO, which means the king NO hang on the tree. He disappeared in to the earth leaving behind his crown and one Edun Ara (Oni epon lara) taken from his body, which was given to Aladekun to invite him anytime the town was in need. Aladekun became the support of Oyo anytime the town was in need, being called Oni le ogba, which originated the contracted word Mogba. Nowadays , Mogba is still in Koso in Oyo town with the power left from Sango as known as OLUOBAKOSO. Mogba Koso till today is the High Chief, who crowns all the Alaafins and the custodian of the Alaafin's crown. All Alaafin's are called "omo ekun" the son of a tiger, which name derived from Sango. "Sango was discovered dead as a child and when the corpse was thrown into the bush the tiger nursed him as one of his cubs." This was an origin of calling all Alaafins" omo ekun" the son of a tiger.
