Vernon Dent Without the Stooges
A clip from a movie,Beast of Berlin, made in 1939.This is only the segment that features Vernon Dent,in my opinion, the greatest of the Three Stooges supporting actors.Love Kenneth McDonald,Bud Jamison,Philip Van Zandt,Symona Boniface,Christine McIntire, and all the others. But to me,Vernon Dent was the greatest of them all.I almost think of him as the Fourth Stooge, although he was usually at odds with the boys..

Clark and McCullough in "The Iceman's Ball" (1932)
"Deep down in your heart, you know that sooner or later, somebody is going to get that pie!" Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough were high school buddies who entered showbiz via the circus, minstrel shows, vaudeville and burlesque. When the Marx Brothers moved to Hollywood, Clark and McCullough became the most prominent comedy team on Broadway. This short also features Fred Kelsey, Vernon Dent, Jimmy Finlayson and Walter Brennan. The director is Mark Sandrich, who would go on to direct the great Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musicals. Disc #1 Rockin' In The Rockies (1945) (feature film with Curly) Have Rocket--Will Travel (1958) (feature film with Curly-Joe) Columbia Color Rhapsody cartoons: The Bon Bon Parade (1935) The Merry Mutineers (1936) A Hollywood Detour (1942) Disc #2 SHEMP HOWARD solo shorts: Most of these solo shorts have Stooge story lines and will leave you missing the other Stooges. It can seem strange to see other actors do the Stooges roles. They are curiosities for sure, but I have yet to find a five-star comedy here. HOME ON THE RANGE (1938) - An Andy Clyde comedy. After getting bit by Andy's dog, Andy;s wife & brother-in-law (Shemp) plot to kill the dog. Andy over hears this and thinks they are trying to kill him. Hard for animal lovers to watch. THE GLOVE SLINGERS (1939) - The Glove Slingers series Fight promoter Shemp hires Noah Beery Jr. (Rockford Files) to be the new boxing champ, fighting his girlfriend's brother! MONEY SQUAWKS (1940) - An Andy Clyde comedy. Railway station operators Andy & Shemp watch over a payroll that arrived, protecting it from bandits. Their antics make this one of the best solo Shemp shorts made. BOOBS IN THE WOODS (1940) - An Andy Clyde comedy. Shemp is the brother-in-law again as he joins Andy & his wife on a hunting trip. His abrasive personality keeps this from being as good as it could have been. PLEASED TO MITT YOU (1940) - The Glove Slingers series. School kids are having a party at Shemp's house. The kids prepare the food just as Curly would, but ...

The Three Stooges In The Tooth Will Out
After being fired from two jobs, the Stooges end up being chased into a dental office. Eventually, the boys study, and graduate from dental school. The dean of the school (Vernon Dent) gives them their first recommendation to go out west (read: far away), and open a practice. The boys open up shop in quiet western town, when their first customer (Slim Gaut) comes in with a mild toothache. Wearing glasses with lenses as thick as Coke bottles, Dr. Shemp proceeds to drill the patient's teeth until smoke rises from his mouth. The appointment is abruptly cut short when an irate customer (Dick Curtis) enters the office with a serious toothache. Feeling nervous, Shemp accidentally picks up the wrong book, entitled The Amateur Carpenter. They first rub sandpaper to his chest, and paste the inside of his hat which they thought it was to "varnish the lid". After discovering it is the wrong book, the boys go back to business seriously. They take the painful tooth, and yank it out as the patient is pulled off the chair, causing him to wake up. Unfortunately, Shemp extracted the wrong tooth, with the angry patient chasing after the frantic Stooges.

The Three Stooges In How High Is Up
The Stooges, who are working as menders, are asleep under their wagon when a broken hydrant washes them down the street, mattress and all, and into the path of a truck. Rudely awoken by a beat cop, they set about drumming up business. Curly attempts to fix a flat tire (using a slice of salami from Moe's sandwich as a patch), and Moe and Larry struggle to get Curly out of his too-tight sweater. They later arrive at a construction site and poke holes on the bottom of the workers' lunch boxes, offering to fix the holes for money. When their ruse is discovered, they are chased onto the actual site and blend in with a crowd of people looking for work. Curly states that they are "the best riveters that ever riveted," and the hiring workman (Edmund Cobb) sends them to work on the 97th floor, despite Curly's debilitating fear of heights. The construction scene features a classic gag of Larry heating a sausage for Moe to eat, and then he grills up a rivet and throws it to Curly, who thinks it's a sausage, and he proceeds to chew the rivet, claiming "It's a weenie, but it's kind of tough." Curly uses a hard hat with a screwhead to engage the rivets while Moe drills them. Here another classic Stoogery ensues as Curly overturns a bucket of grease, which allows him to slide off the building and land on a hot grill below after Moe drills the rivet against his hard hat. The Stooges do a lousy job riveting and part of the building collapses when head foreman Mr. Blake (Vernon Dent) leans ...

Harry Langdon in THE HITCHHIKER (1933) -- Part 1 of 2
Okay, this one's not a silent, but it does star my favorite silent comedian Harry Langdon as a lone wanderer who manages to hitch a ride on an airplane and make his fellow passengers wish they'd taken the bus. THE HITCHHIKER features an extended version of Langdon's classic attempts to treat a cold, which were originally seen in his feature film THE STRONG MAN in 1926.
