Read our full review here: http://bit.ly/1k80izh Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/11Ad1j1 Subscribe to the mag: http://subscribe.autoexpress.co.uk/yt As well as wanting it to compete with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and the Volkswagen Tiguan, Jeep's parent company Chrysler has priced the Cherokee from £25,000. This means it's expecting the Cherokee to also go up against premium SUVs like BMW X3 and Audi Q5. While it may not have the same badge appeal, the Cherokee has got some pretty brave styling and Jeep is promising us it's made big improvements to the cabin quality. Because this is a pretty new car, we haven't really seen much of its interior yet - there are quite a few nice chunky switches, so it feels quite Jeep-y and the quality is pretty good. Top-spec Limited models get a soft-touch dashboard with contrasting stitching, and there's also a big 8.4-inch colour touchscreen in the middle, as well as a seven-inch colour screen in the instrument cluster. However, certain materials such as the surround for the gear-lever look a bit cheap and tacky. The plastic on the lower dash is also pretty scratchy and hard, as is the transmission tunnel. Jeep has been generous with equipment - mid-spec Longitude models get cruise control, dual-zone climate control, power windows and rear parking sensors, while Limited models also feature a reversing camera. Overall, the Cherokee is pretty well equipped and that's good considering it's going to have a premium price tag. Because it's a Jeep, this new Cherokee should be the best in its class off-road. However, the engineers told us they've worked hard on the on-road dynamics too as that's where it'll mostly be used. For serious off-roaders, there's also Trailhawk version with better approach and departure angles, a proper locking rear-diff and a low-ratio gearbox. Buyers of the regular Jeep Cherokee can choose from either a two-wheel-drive or two slightly less capable four-wheel-drive systems. In all likelihood though, buyers will most likely opt for the 2.0-litre diesel. The Cherokee is available with either 170 or 140bhp, with the most powerful being mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which is okay - the gearbox works really well and the engine has enough torque. The Jeep Cherokee goes from 0-62mph in just over 10 seconds and while there are some nice smooth shifts from the gearbox, there are some issues with the engine's refinement. It's fine at cruising speed, but when trying to use all of its performance, the gearbox kicks down a couple of gears, and then it sounds quite rough towards the top of the rev-range. The Jeep Cherokee's ride is actually pretty good. It's nice and soft and it feels smooth over these bumpy roads, but when it comes to the handling, the steering is nicely weighted - it has a bit of heft to it, which is what you want from a Jeep. Despite the weighty steering though, there's not all that much involvement, it kind of feels really numb and it leans slightly in the corners. In terms of this being a fun-to-drive or performance SUV, it doesn't really feel that brief. The Jeep Cherokee is an SUV that's really capable off-road, pretty good on-road with a hi-tech cabin. What's more, Euro NCAP named it the safest car in its class last year - that's a pretty long and impressive list of talents, but then the Cherokee goes up against some seriously talented rivals. The good news is, is that it's no longer as far adrift from those rivals as it previously has been. It's not best in class, but it is at least an unusual alternative to the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan - and that's something we haven't been able to say about a Cherokee for quite a long time.

Join me as I take a look at the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The Cherokee's styling has proved polarizing to say the least. Chrysler of course has a history of creating love it or hate it designs and I for one am glad to see them take a chance with the Cherokee even though it's not my cup of tea. I admit that the CUV looks better in person than in photos, but it still haven't warmed up to the bent 7-slot grille. What sends most people for a loop however is the lighting arrangement. The thin and raked light modules nest the hood are the daytime running lamps and the turn signals, not the headlamps. You'll find the headlamps in the middle of the bumper cover behind a smoked plastic lens. Further down the front re the fog lights. I think that's the problem with the cherokee's front for me, I can't think of another car that separates these three lamps this far apart. Even the Lexus IS looks a little funny with the DRLs divorced from the headlamps. While the Grand Cherokee continues it's mission as the "American Range Rover" anyone looking for the Cherokee to be the "American Evoque" is likely to be disappointed. Still the Cherokees interior is class leading in many ways with more soft touch plastics than you'll find in the Mazda, Toyota or Honda competition. Once again styling is a subjective matter but I found the interior to be attractive despite being slightly untraditional. Chrysler fitted the Grand Cherokee's chunky steering wheel and retains the optional leather wrap and heated functionality while ditching the GC's paddle shifters. Oddly Jeep opted for a traditional shifter rather than the Audiesque lever in the GC or the Jaguar-like shift knob in the Dodge line. The wide front seats are deeply padded, supportive and easily the best in the compact across over segment in terms of comfort. Thankfully the seat engineers have ditched the oddly "dome shaped" seat bottom cushion found in some other Chrysler products allowing you to sit "in" the Cherokees seats, not "on" them. Most Cherokee models get a fold-flat front passenger seat improving cargo versatility but that option is incompatible with the ventilated front seats and four-way power lumbar support for the front passenger. That's an area where the Cherokee sets itself apart from the competition as most compact crossovers skimp on passenger seat adjustability. If a crossover is supposed to be a cross between a family sedan and an SUV, then the Cherokee is the truest crossover you can buy. Trouble is, most RAV-4 and CR-V shoppers are really just looking for the modern station wagon: something with a big cargo hold and car-like manners. In this area the Cherokee comes up short. It's big, heavy and drives Ike it is big and heavy. But it's not without its charms, the Cherokee is the only compact crossover that is capable of the school run and the rubicon trail. It's also the quietest and most comfortable crossover and if you're willing to pay, it's the one loaded with the most gadgets and goodies.
