Maldon is a town in Victoria, Australia, in the Shire of Mount Alexander local government area. It has been designated "Australia's first notable town" and is notable for its 19th-century appearance, maintained since gold-rush days. At the 2011 census, Maldon had a population of 1,432.
The district where Maldon now stands was first discovered by white Europeans in 1836, during Major Thomas Mitchell's famous Victorian expedition. It was settled soon afterwards by pastoralists, and two sheep runs were established in the area, at the foot of Mount Tarrangower. In December 1853, gold was discovered at Cairn Curran (the name given to one of the sheep runs), and Maldon became a part of the Victorian Gold Rush.
The goldfield, which was named "Tarrangower Fields" after Mount Tarrangower, immediately attracted an immense number of men eager to make their fortunes at the diggings. Just one month after gold was first discovered, the Chief Commissioner for Goldfields reported 3000 miners had arrived at the diggings. A month after that, a journalist for The Argus reported that the road from Castlemaine to Maldon was lined with the shops of people hoping to make a living of their own from the miners:

A great day chasing the Steamrail Maldon Experience featuring Steamrail's loco R711 we film a various locations such as Spotswood Diggers Rest Gisborne Castlemaine Porcupine Hill Woodend and finishing up at Sunbury also on the VGR we see K153 and Y164 hauling eight carriages to Maldon and back you will also see both R711 K153 & Y164 paralleling next to each other at full speed. Also sorry about the blurring in the video due to the locomotives Headlights being too bright. We found Porcupine Pioneer Village situated just outside Maldon in Victoria. The village is a recreation, and is a complete town, with each building furnished completely as it would have been in the day. We were there in 2007. As at July 21, 2014, Message from Maldon Visitor Centre.... "Porcupine Village is not operating at present. It was on the market for some time -- I don't know what has transpired.".
On 20 May, 2017 I attended the Maldon Marching Girls' exhibition at the Maldon Museum and Archives Association.

Back on Track: Men talking about childhood sexual assault follows the true stories of a number of participants from SECASA's annual weekend retreat for male survivors of sexual assault in Maldon, central Victoria. This weekend is facilitated by SECASA counsellors and Mike Lew, therapist and author of 'Victims No Longer, The Classic Guide for Men Recovering from Sexual Child Abuse'. 18 months in the making, this video was the brainchild of the male survivors featured in it. They created it in the hope that their stories would help other men on the path of healing.
