Basel (/ˈbɑːzəl/ or /ˈbɑːl/; or less often used Basle;German: Basel pronounced [ˈbaːzəl]; French: Bâle [bɑl]; Italian: Basilea [baziˈlɛːa]; Romansh: Basilea [baziˈlɛːa] ) is Switzerland's third most populous city (behind Zürich and Geneva) with about 195,000 inhabitants. Located where the Swiss, French and German borders meet, Basel also has suburbs in France and Germany. In 2014, the Basel agglomeration was the third largest in Switzerland with a population of 537,100 in 74 municipalities in Switzerland and an additional 53 in neighboring countries (municipal count as of 2000). The tri-national Basel metropolitan area has around 830,000 inhabitants in 226 municipalities.
Located in northwest Switzerland on the river Rhine, Basel functions as a major industrial centre for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The Basel region, culturally extending into German Baden-Württemberg and French Alsace, reflects the heritage of its three states in the modern Latin name: "Regio TriRhena". It has the oldest university of the Swiss Confederation (1460).
Switzerland (/ˈswɪtsərlənd/), officially the Swiss Confederation (Latin: Confoederatio Helvetica, hence its abbreviation CH), is a country in Europe. While still named the "Swiss Confederation" for historical reasons, modern Switzerland is a federal directorial republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities, called Bundesstadt ("federal city"). The country is situated in Western and Central Europe, and is bordered by Italy to the south, France to the west, Germany to the north, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. Switzerland is a landlocked country geographically divided between the Alps, the Swiss Plateau and the Jura, spanning an area of 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi). While the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory, the Swiss population of approximately 8 million people is concentrated mostly on the Plateau, where the largest cities are to be found: among them are the two global and economic centres, Zürich and Geneva.
The establishment of the Swiss Confederation is traditionally dated to 1 August 1291, which is celebrated annually as the Swiss National Day. The country has a long history of armed neutrality—it has not been in a state of war internationally since 1815—and did not join the United Nations until 2002. Nevertheless, it pursues an active foreign policy and is frequently involved in peace-building processes around the world. In addition to being the birthplace of the Red Cross, Switzerland is home to numerous international organizations, including the second largest UN office. On the European level, it is a founding member of the European Free Trade Association, but notably it is not part of the European Union, nor the European Economic Area. However the country does participate in the Schengen Area and the EU's single market through a number of bilateral treaties.

Take a tour of City Hall of Basel in Basel, Switzerland -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Walk through Basel's Marktplatz, and you can't help but be drawn to the splendor of the bright and beautiful Rathaus. The Rathaus, or city hall building, was constructed in various centuries and in various styles, making it a true architectural fusion. The middle section was constructed in the early 16th century, and the Art Nouveau towers on either side were added in 1904. Sculptures and paneling colorfully recount the history of the city. The outer walls of the Rathaus are adorned with beautiful murals, as is the inner courtyard. Some buildings represent a mere point in history; the poetic Rathaus tells the story of the city of Basel.
You don’t need to search for the sights in Basel. As you wander through the city, you will find them with every step you take. Whether you are in the picturesque Old Town or in the midst of world class architecture – the city offers something for every taste. www.basel.com #LoveBasel
Art. Culture. History. Food. Luxury. The Rhine River. Basel has a lot going on and I had limited time to see it so I took in the highlights as fast as I could. My homebase was the Hotel Nomad, a trendy boutique with easy access to top sites like the Altstadt, or old city, the Marktplatz which has a farmer's market, Johann Wanner Christmas shop, the Kunstmuseum Basel, Fondation Beyeler and the Rhine River. We took river ferries to cross to Klein Basel, a funky neighborhood with a lot of great shops, cafes and of course, the notable Ueli Brewery. Check out this travel guide for how to see some of Basel's hotspots, in just 24 hours!

Where Switzerland, France and Germany meet lies Basel, at the heart of a trinational metropolitan area. In this unique location, the city has much to offer: an international flair, good schools, innovative research, a thriving economy, an excellent regional and international transport infrastructure, a rich cultural life and a high standard of living.
