Small and efficient foreign cars from Japan and Germany gave Detroit headaches. Here was offered to the American public fuel efficient, less expensive quality cars to counter the fuel guzzling, glitzy, huge and quality poor American makes. Seldom seen is an example of a Japanese product that looks this new as shown here. I usually don't videotape foreign cars but this Toyota looks brand new and I couldn't resist filming it. Here are stats on this year of Toyota: Engine: Four cylinder, water-cooled with a capacity of 1490cc. Bore/ stroke: 78 x 78mm and engine valves are ohv. Maximum power is 82bhp at 5200rpm. Maximum torque is 122Nm at 2800rpm. The fuel system is a downdraught twin-barrel carburetor with automatic choke and the transmission is a four speed manual. Suspension is independent front with coil springs and telescopic shocks/semi-elliptical leaf springs. Steeringis a worm and sector roller type. Brakes are duo-servo drums front and rear, with front discs optional and the wheels/tires are pressed steel disc wheels, tire size is 5.60-13. See the beauty and quality of this remarkable surviving Toyota. In fact, the Toyota Company search high and low for an original surviving Toyota for their museum and archives and finally found one like this in another country. Thankfully, this example still resides in the U.S. No matter how you might feel about Japanese products, because these quality and efficient cars influence Detroit so much it remains to be a part of the U.S. significant automotive history.
