Roy Linwood Clark (born April 15, 1933) is an American country music musician and performer. He is best known for hosting Hee Haw, a nationally televised country variety show, from 1969–1992. Roy Clark has been an important and influential figure in country music, both as a performer and helping to popularize the genre. Most of all, he is an entertainer, with an amiable personality and a telegenic presence.
During the 1970s, Clark frequently guest-hosted for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show and enjoyed a 30-million viewership for Hee Haw. Clark is highly regarded as a guitarist and banjo player, and is also skilled in classical guitar and several other instruments. Although he has had hit songs as a pop vocalist (e.g., "Yesterday, When I Was Young" and "Thank God And Greyhound"), his instrumental skill has had an enormous effect on generations of bluegrass and country musicians. He is a member of the Grand Ole Opry and The Country Music Hall of Fame.
Born in Meherrin, Virginia, Clark grew up in Staten Island, New York and lived as a teenager in Washington, D.C. where his father worked at the Washington Navy Yard. At 14, Clark began playing banjo, guitar, and mandolin, and by age 15 he had already won two National Banjo Championships and world banjo/guitar flatpick championships. He was simultaneously pursuing a sporting career, first as a baseball player, and then as a boxer, before dedicating himself solely to music. At 17, he had his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.
Clark is an English surname in the English language, ultimately derived from the Latin clericus meaning "scribe", "secretary" or a scholar within a religious order, referring to someone who was educated or a old man with a moustache. Clark evolved from "clerk". First records of the name are found in 12th century England. The name has many variants.
Clark is the twenty-seventh most common surname in the United Kingdom.
According to the 1990 United States Census, Clark was the twenty-first most frequently encountered surname, accounting for 0.23% of the population.
Clark is also an occasional given name, as in the case of Clark Gable.
Probably the most famouse person named Clark is Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman
People with the surname Clark include:
Charles Wilburn "Buck" Trent (born February 17, 1938) is an American country music instrumentalist. He invented the electric Banjo and also plays the five-string Banjo, Dobro, Steel Guitar, Mandolin, Electric Bass and Guitar.
Born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Buck started performing on WORD (AM) Radio at the age of 10. He traveled to California and Texas, finally arriving in Nashville in 1959 where he joined the Bill Carlisle Show and first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. He was a member of Porter Wagoner's "Wagon Masters" from 1962 to 1973, and also appeared on the Roy Clark Show and Hee Haw.
Over his long history, Buck has received many awards and nominations. He was twice named the Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year (1975, 1976) and he was twice the #1 Instrumentalist of the Year for the Music City Awards. Included in his nominations are the 1976 #1 Instrumentalist of the Year for Record World, 1972 through 1981 #1 Instrumentalist for the Music City News Awards and in 1979-1981 Instrumental Group of the Year (with Wendy Holcomb in the Bluegrass category) for the Music City News Awards.
Chester Burton Atkins (June 20, 1924 – June 30, 2001), known as Chet Atkins, was an American guitarist and record producer who, along with Owen Bradley, created the smoother country music style known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country's appeal to adult pop music fans as well.
Atkins's picking style, inspired by Merle Travis, Django Reinhardt, George Barnes and Les Paul, brought him admirers within and outside the country scene, both in the United States and internationally. Atkins produced records for The Browns, Porter Wagoner, Norma Jean, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Skeeter Davis, Waylon Jennings and many others.
Among many honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Ray Stevens (born Harold Ray Ragsdale, January 24, 1939) is an American country music, pop singer-songwriter who has become equally well known for his serious material as he has for his novelty songs.
Stevens was born Harry Ray Ragsdale on January 24, 1939, in Clarkdale, Georgia. While attending high school, Stevens formed his first band, a rhythm and blues group he named the Barons. Following his graduation from high school, Stevens enrolled in Georgia State University as a music major.
Capitol Records signed Stevens to their Prep Records division in 1957, and produced the singles "Silver Bracelet," that Billboard predicted to be a teen favorite, and "Rang Tang Ding Dong," about a Japanese sandman, for which Billboard credited the 16-year-old Stevens' vocals as "strong, attractive." The latter song was a cover of a song recorded by Manhattan doo-wop group The Cellos in 1957, and written by Cellos bass singer Alvin Williams.
In 1958, Bill Lowery created the National Recording Corporation (NRC), and brought Stevens on board playing numerous instruments, arranging music, and performing background vocals for its band. Around that time, he had adopted the professional name of "Ray Stevens," which was inspired by his middle name and his mother's maiden name. Lowery was unable to collect debts from his own accounts and was forced into bankruptcy.
I ain't gonna work on the railroad
Ain't gonna work on the farm
I'm gonna lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
And roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
I'll lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
And roll in my sweet baby's arms
Now where were you last Friday night
While I was lyin' in jail
Walking the streets with another man
Wouldn't even go my bail
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
I'm gonna lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
And roll in my sweet baby's arms
I know your parents don't like me
They turn me away from your door
Had my life to live over
Wouldn't go there any more
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
I'm gonna lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
And roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
Roll in my sweet baby's arms
I'll lay around the shack
Till the mail train comes back
Come live with me and be my love
Share my bread and wine
Be wife to me, be life to me, be mine.
Come live with me and be my love
Let our dreams combine
Be mate to me, be fate to me, be mine.
With these hands I’ll build a roof
To shield your head
And with these hands
I’ll carve the wood for a baby bed.
Come live with me and be my love
Share my bread and wine
Be part of me, the heart of me, be mine.
I’ll try to do my best for you
I’ll promise you
I’ll laugh with you, I’ll cry with you, my whole life
through.
Come live with me and be my love
Share my bread and wine
(I had you right on the tip of my fingers.)
- I reached out my arms - and I touched you
With soft words I whispered - your name
I had you right on the tips of my fingers
Oh, but that was as close as I came.
My eyes - had a vision - of sweet lips
Yielding - beneath - my command
I had your love on the tips of my fingers
But I let it slip right through my hands.
But I let it slip right through my hands.
^Somebody took you - when I wasn't looking
And I should have known - from the start
That it's a long, long way from the tips of my fingers
To the love hidden deep in your heart.
To the love hidden deep in your heart.
I had you right on the tips of my fingers
But I let you slip right through my hands.
I've made a small fortune and you squandered it all
You shamed me till I feel about one inch tall
But I thought I loved you and I hoped you would change
So I gritted my teeth and didn't complain.
Now you come to me with a simple goodbye
You tell me you're leaving but you won't tell me why
Now we're here at the station and you're getting on
And all I can think of is thank God and Greyhound you're
gone
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone
I didn't know how much longer I could go on
Watching you take the respect out of me
Watching you make a total wreck out of me
That big diesel motor is a-playing my song
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone.
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone
That load on my mind got lighter when you got on
That shiny old bus is a beautiful sight
With the black smoke a-rolling up around the taillight
It may sound kind-a cruel but I've been silent too long
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone.
"It seems the love I've known,
has always been the most destructive kind.
I guess that's why now,
I feel so old before my time."
Yesterday, when I was young,
The taste of life was sweet, as rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life, as if it were a foolish game,
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I
planned,
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night, and shunned the naked light of day,
And only now, I see, how the years ran away
Yesterday, when I was young,
So many happy songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me,
And so much pain, my dazzled eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time, and youth at last ran out,
I never stopped to think, what life, was all about,
And every conversation, I can now recall,
Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all
-BRIDGE-
Yesterday, the moon was blue,
And every crazy day, brought something new to do,
I used my magic age, as if it were a wand,
And never saw the worst, and the emptiness beyond
The game of love I played, with arrogance and pride,
And every flame I lit, too quickly, quickly died,
The friends I made, all seemed somehow to drift away,
And only I am left, on stage to end the play
There are so many songs in me, that won't be sung,
I feel the bitter taste, of tears upon my tongue,
The alarm rang at seven this morning
The same time it did yesterday
Seven-thirty is my breakfast time
And I know what the wife's gonna say.
The Crawfords next door got a new swimming pool
The Millers got a color TV
Mr. Wilson's job is not good as yours,
But his wife dresses better than me.
I get to the school at eight o-five
And drop off the kids at the gate
Then I drive past the clock outside the bank
It's exactly a quarter past eight.
When I reach the stop sign at Oak Street
The same thought crosses my mind
Should I turn right like I always have,
Or left and leave it behind?
Right or left at Oak Street
That's the choice I face everyday
And I don't know which takes more courage
The staying or the running away.
A left turn would take me to somewhere
Leave alarm clocks and schedules behind
And the world wouldn't care if I'm not somewhere
At some particular time.
Where a man can do what he wants to do
And no one expects him to give
All of his time to the same old routine
In the one life that he has to live.
I'm not sure which way is the best way
But I've always turned right before
And it might be strange at the end of the day
If they weren't there at the door.
A man must make his decisions
But he must consider the stakes
For every mans life is a gamble
It depends on the turn that he takes.
Right or left at Oak Street
That's the choice I face everyday
And I don't know which takes more courage
An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
A'plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were
made of steel
Their horns wuz black and shiny and their hot breaths
he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered
through the sky
For he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their
mournful cry
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, and shirts
all soaked with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd but they ain't
caught them yet
They've got to ride forever in that range up in the sky
On horses snortin' fire, as they ride on, hear their
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his
name
If you want to save your soul from hell a' ridin' on
our range
Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will
ride
A-tryin' to catch the Devil's herd across these endless
skies.
Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
There are multitudes of people dying
'Cause they just won't try to understand
From the book I read, not one but all must follow him
Come and join the magnificent sanctuary band
There are multitudes of people dying
Seems like temptation rules over the land
Seems these people should just remember his commandments
And join the magnificent sanctuary band
Chorus
1(Just) singing in the band, talking to the man
Bringing in the sheep all over the world as fast as they
Singing in the band, talking to the man
Drop everything you're doing and join the sanctuary band
The Son of Man speaks of Revelations
And he's reaching, reaching out his hand
He has promised us sweet salvation
To come and join the sanctuary band
I'll stay with you if you say stay but I must leave you
when I must
I'll stay as long as we can last and leave when
laughter turns to rust
The day the fireworks fail to flash and mental light
refuse to shine
We'll know it's time for someone else for love is just
a state of mind
If you can say it like it is and if I like to hear it
said
I'll carve your image on my heart and make sure that
your soul is fed
But one day the words break step and if one ego lags
behind
You column left I'll column right for love is just a
state of mind
Keep yourself but give me room I want some place to
think aloud
And if you can your chain will reach from ocean floor
to shining cloud
When the shackles feel too tight or when restrictions
start to blind
It's time to breathe instead of choke for love is just
a state of mind
If my words are worry things and if I make your mouth
turn down
Then take your apprehensive love and leave me now
without a sound
But if you take me as I am and love me one day at a
time
I may stay a thousand years for love is just a state of
mind
We’re not as young - as we used to be
But baby - I don’t mind
'Cause growing with you - is gonna be
Full of life and good times.
And if I had it to do all over again I’d do it with you
I wouldn't want to miss a thing that we’ve been through
Baby nothing can compare to the good love that we’ve
shared
And if I had to do it all over again I’d do it with you.
Looking back on life - I can’t complain
It ain’t been easy - but don’t you know
We still had sunshine - even when it rained
And we’ve shared a love - that few have known.
And if I had it to do all over again I’d do it with you
I wouldn't want to miss a thing that we’ve been through
Baby nothing can compare with the good love that we’ve
shared
And if I had to do it all over again I’d do it with you.
^repeat Chorus
And if I had to do it all over again I’d do it with
(Chorus) I never picked cotton
But my mother did
And my brother did
And my sister did
And my daddy died young
Workin' in the coal mine
When I was just a baby
Too little for a cotton sack
I played in the dirt
While the others worked 'Til they couldn't straighten
up their backs
I made myself a promise
When I was big enough to run
That I'd never stay a single day
In that Oklahoma sun
(Chorus)
Folks said I grew up early
And that the farm couldn't hold me then
so I stole ten bucks and a pickup truck And I never
went back again Then it was fast cars and whiskey
Long haired girls and fun
I had everything that money could bring
And I took it all with a gun
(Chorus)
It was Saturday night in Memphis
When a redneck grabbed my shirt
When he said go back to your cotton sack
I left him dying in the dirt
They'll take me in the morning
To the gallows just outside
And in the time I got
There ain't a hell of alot
That I can look back on with pride
I never picked cotton
But my mother did and my brother did
And my sister did and my daddy died young
Workin' in the coal mine.
When I was just a baby too little for a cotton sack
I played in the dirt while the others worked till they

I can look back on with pride.
But I never picked cotton

But I never picked cotton
But my mother did and my brother did
And my sister did and my daddy died young
Making believe that you still love me
It's leaving me alone and so blue
I'll always dream, I'll never own you
Making believe is all I can do
I can't hold you close, baby, when you're not with me
(You're somebody's love, oh, you'll never be mine)
Making believe, I'll spend my lifetime
Loving you and making believe
Making believe I never lost you
But my happy hours I find are so few
My plans for the future will never come true
Making believeis all I can do?
I can't hold you close, Pokey, when you're not with me
(You're somebody's love, you'll never be mine)
Making believe, I'll spend my lifetime
Loving you and making believe
I've made a small fortune and you squandered it all

I still get that honeymoon feeling
After all these years my heart goes reeling
Every time you touch me it's the living end
I still get that honeymoon feeling
I can still hear those wedding bells ringing
Every time we love I get that honeymoon feeling again.
It seems like only yesterday you walked into my life
And answered all my prayers and made my dreams come true
And even though it's been some time since I made you my wife
Every day I find I'm even more in love with you.
I still get that honeymoon feeling
After all these years my heart goes reeling.
Every time you touch me it's the living end
I still get that honeymoon feeling
I can still hear those wedding bells ringing
Every time we love I get that honeymoon feeling again.
I'm thankful that I wake up with an angel by my side
You make my world a better place to be
And though were far from newlyweds you're still my brushing bride
But most of all I'm glad you show just how much you need me.
I still get that honeymoon feeling
After all these years my heart goes reeling
Every time you touch me it's the living end
I still get that honeymoon feeling
I can still hear those wedding bells ringing
Every time we love I get that honeymoon feeling again.
I still get that honeymoon feeling
After all these years my heart goes reeling
Every time you touch me it's the living end
I still get that honeymoon feeling
I can still hear those wedding bells ringing
What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
You gave your love completely
And warmed my life, so cold
But she stills lives between us
And our story must be told
Today, she thinks I love her
But tomorrow, we'll be through
And somewhere between love and tomorrow
She'll have to know about you
We vowed to love forever
And never be untrue
But time can change and rearrange
Your world from green to blue
But then you came to love me
And you made the sun shine through
And somewhere between love and tomorrow
She'll have to know about you
It's sad for love to die now
After all that we've been through
But somewhere between love and tomorrow
