Rizwan Khan, a Muslim from the Borivali section of Mumbai, suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism that complicates socialization. The adult Rizwan marries a Hindu single mother, Mandira, in San Francisco. After 9/11, Rizwan is detained by authorities at LAX who mistake his disability for suspicious behavior. The president kicked off his trip on an informal note, joining Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a famous Tokyo sushi restaurant with hard-to-come-by reservations and a hefty price tag. Mr Obama and Mr Abe greeted each other warmly outside Sukiyabashi Jiro, the underground sushi restaurant run by 88-year-old Jiro Ono. The outing was unusually casual by Japanese standards and underscored the effort by both countries to strengthen the personal relationship between Mr Obama and Mr Abe. The two leaders will hold more formal talks on Thursday, with Mr Obama aiming to promote the US as a committed economic, military and political partner. But the West's dispute with Russia over Ukraine threatens to cast a shadow over the president's sales mission. The party was expected to be treated to Jiro's multiple-course, $300-per-person set sushi menu. After Mr Obama left the restaurant, Mr Abe told reporters he had heard that Mr Obama likes Japanese food, especially sushi, and he wanted the president to experience traditional Japanese cuisine. He quoted Mr Obama as praising the sushi as "the best sushi he had had in his life." Clinton is leaving Obama's Cabinet soon, and speculation about the former first lady and senator has only grown more intense after a heated appearance last week on Capitol Hill. Both Obama and Clinton batted away questions about future campaigns, but the joint interview -- the president's first with anyone other than first lady Michelle Obama -- was only likely to increase the fascination with Clinton's future. "The president and I care deeply about what's going to happen for our country in the future," Clinton said. "And I don't think, you know, either he or I can make predictions about what's going to happen tomorrow or the next year."

In einem Exklusiv-Interview mit Claus Kleber für das ZDF-"heute-journal" am Samstag, 18. Januar 2014, 22.45 Uhr, sagte Barack Obama über seine "Beziehung von Freundschaft und Vertrauen" zu Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel: "Ich muss und darf diese Beziehung nicht durch Überwachungsmaßnahmen beschädigen, die unsere vertrauensvolle Kommunikation behindern. Solange ich Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten bin, muss sich die deutsche Kanzlerin darüber keine Sorgen machen." Die deutsche Regierungschefin und er seien "in Fragen der Außenpolitik vielleicht nicht immer einer Meinung, das ist aber kein Grund abzuhören", so der US Präsident. Obama erklärte, dass die Überwachungsmöglichkeiten der US-Geheimdienste "über die Fähigkeiten vieler anderer Staaten hinausgehen" und dass daraus eine "besondere Verantwortung der USA erwächst". Der US-Präsident stellte aber klar, dass die US-Geheimdienste weiterhin Daten sammeln werden, die man einerseits "zur Wahrung der nationalen Sicherheit" benötige, andererseits mit ihnen "auch für die Sicherheit der Verbündeten" sorge. Erstmals bestätigte Obama, dass die Datensammlung auch strategische Gründe habe: "Wozu brauchen wir Nachrichten- oder Geheimdienste, wenn sie nur die Dinge herausbringen, die Sie im SPIEGEL oder in der New York Times nachlesen können? Per definitionem haben diese Dienste die Aufgabe herauszufinden, was die Leute vorhaben, was in ihrem Kopf vorgeht, was sie beabsichtigen. Das unterstützt unsere diplomatischen und politischen Ziele." Für die Enttäuschung vieler Deutscher äußerte der US-Präsident Verständnis.
