Watch more Complete Guide to Whiskey videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/506086-Whiskey-vs-Scotch-vs-Bourbon-Whiskey-Guide Learn what bourbon from the experts at NYC's Rye House in this Howcast video. What is bourbon? Bourbon is the classic American spirit, not the cigarettes, the actual whiskey itself. Bourbon is a corn based liquor with its own controlled methods of production that are legally classified in America and in other countries as well. Basically, bourbon is a corn liquor. It's a minimum of 51 percent corn in the mash bill which goes into the fermenter before it goes into the distillation process. It's made in America. It goes into new charred oak barrels. The different levels how heavily charred it is on the inside give the notes of caramel and vanilla which hapens when you toast oak. It spends a minimum of two years in the barrel. It comes off the still at a given proof and is then put into barrels at a different proof. It spends a minimum of two years to be called bourbon, and six years to be called Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey which means it's also barreled and bottled in Kentucky. A lot of people think it comes only from Bourbon County, in Kentucky, which ironically is a dry county. But, no, it can be made anywhere in America. It can be made in upstate New York or it can be made in Florida as long as it follows the actual legal regulations to be called bourbon. It's one of the largest selling whiskey categories. It's the biggest growing segment both in terms of mass producers and microdistilleries. It is a lot of people's introduction into drinking fine spirits, because it's easy. Well, it can be easy. It can be soft, sweet, and floral. Or it can be sharp, aggressive, and high proof. You can find really great examples of it for 20 or 30 dollars a bottle. It's a growth segment in our market. It's definitely something where you can have anything from your simple big producers - Jim Beam, Four Roses - all the way up through hand distilled micro tiny bottles that sell for 50 dollars for a 375. It was my first love in a lot of ways, and I'm very sorry to every woman that I've ever loved for being compared to liquor. It's definitely an easy spirit, straight forward, and when you need a whiskey sometimes nothing else will do but bourbon.- published: 04 Feb 2014

What Is Corn Whiskey aka Bourbon? | Whiskey Guide
Watch more Complete Guide to Whiskey videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/506098-What-Is-Light-Whiskey-Whiskey-Guide Learn about corn whiskey, better known as bourbon, from the experts at NYC's Rye House in this Howcast video. Bourbon. Bourbon is an American liquor. It's made from at least 51 percent corn. It has a wide variety of different legal controls on the manufacturing process. Bourbon is the classic American spirit. It takes the things that we're best at, like growing corn and shipping things, and turns it into booze. It's made mostly from corn. None of them make it 100% from corn because that's terribly nasty. Everything moderates a little bit with wheat, rye, barley. And you get a variety of different small manufacturers, artisan distilleries, and big industrial monoliths that run stills continuously then barrel age and put them into rickhouses and all those fun things. It's like an industrial cooperative. There are a handful of very large stills and then a few very small producers. They do most of the distillation all in one place in one general area of Kentucky. Then people will buy the juice, barrel age it themselves, and put it through different legal definitions in order to make different things. You have bourbon, which comes directly from the still to the barrel, sits there for two years, has given proof requirements which is to say how much alcohol is in it. Then at the end it can be watered down to proof or barrel aged cask strength. There are two different qualifications for bourbon. There is straight bourbon, which is the two year, and there's Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey which means that it is distilled, and barreled, and bottled in Kentucky, although sometimes they age it in Indiana just because the real estate's cheaper. It's an art of blending, because when you take them off the still, depending on where in the warehouse you put your bourbon barrels, they're going to evaporate at different rates. Higher up it's hotter. You'll lose more of the alcohol. Lower down it's cooler, but you won't get as much of the barrel flavor because you won't have the same expansions and contractions of the wood. So, it really takes a master distiller's hand to blend them together and get a consistently excellent product. Some bourbons, whether they're Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, some are doing more interesting things these days. Once it's legally qualified to be Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, for instance, this one's finished in port barrels afterwards to give an extra nuance of flavor to the ending, mitigate a little bit of the heat of the alcohol. An interesting thing about the bourbon barrels is they can only be used once. Legally it has to be new charred American oak. It started as something to protect the coopers union, not the one downtown, the coopers union in the southeast that actually makes the barrels. Once a barrel's been used for bourbon it can't be reused to legally make bourbon. They ship them off to a lot of other places around the world to use as barrel aging. Generally not for wine because it's been charred and it tastes oaky and burned on the inside. But a lot of liquors around the world are made with used bourbon barrels. Bourbon is a wide style. It's a good one for people who are just trying to get into drinking new liquors and trying new things, because you can tell a good bourbon from a bad bourbon real quick. But, in the end there really is no such thing as bad bourbon. My favorite bourbon is generally the one in front of me, or all of them in front of me in fact. And that's a quick summary of bourbon, corn whiskey.- published: 22 Mar 2014

Whiskey, scotch and bourbon. Now, scotch and bourbon are both whiskeys. But rectangles aren't always squares. Scotch is whiskey that's made in Scotland, and has this distinct tradition. It's generally made with peated malts. It's made to a different flavor balance than just regular whiskey. Whiskey can be made anywhere. Single malt whiskey can be made anywhere. It's just a question of process. Bourbon is strictly American. It's made by a certain codified legal process, and it has a tradition and a history, and a more narrow flavor profile than just whiskey as a category or scotch specifically. That's a quick rundown on the difference between scotch, bourbon and all whiskey.- published: 22 Feb 2014

Watch more Complete Guide to Whiskey videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/506082-What-Is-Whiskey-Whiskey-Guide Learn how to pick a good, cheap bourbon from the experts at NYC's Rye House in this Howcast video. How to pick a good, cheap bourbon. Good and cheap rarely run together in the same crowd. Generally, if you want quality, you're going to have to pay for it. So, how do you pick an unoffensive, inexpensive bourbon? Most people don't like their bourbons called cheap. I respect that. So, how do you pick an inexpensive, but cost-effective bourbon? I look for proof. You're probably going to mix it or you're going to shoot it. You're going to get it put away. Sometimes you just need a good, cheap liquor. In that case, I'm going to look at proof - 86 proof, 101 proof. Basically, whatever takes the express train to "Sloppy Ville" is going to get you going. You can find some really high quality, inexpensive liquors depending on where you look. There are a lot that you wouldn't necessary think are going to be really high quality. In fact, sometimes you'll find some really high quality, inexpensive bourbons. It's all about trying everything. Go to your local liquor store. Try new things. Better yet, ask a bartender. I have very few economic incentives to lie to you, so you ask your bartender. Trust your bartender. That's how to pick a good, cheap bourbon.- published: 06 Feb 2014

Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Collection(36 Full Bottles)
Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Collection(36 Full Bottles)
Here's my collection of 36 different bottles of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, all full and unopened. To be called Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the whiskey must be made in the state of Kentucky from at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak barrels for 2 or more years, and it must be bottled at 80 proof(40% alcohol) or higher. First one is a very rare pre-prohibition bottle of Old Charter bottled in 1917 and made in 1914. It cost me $100 and is my most expensive bottle. Finding it was all it took to get me started. Another old one is the Jim Beam statue of liberty bottle from the early 1970's I found at a garage sale for $10, still full and unopened. I've been collecting for less than a year and I buy a bottle about once a week on a limited budget. Maybe one day I'll drink some of these but I'd rather just save them. I had the opportunity to collaborate with Kenzie McKenzie back in 2011 to begin work on a brand package including her debut album. Where Kenzies' music is a wild mix between Electronica, Synth, Rock and gospel the album's black and white motif including the neon sign logo was inspired by 1930's-1940's New Orleans Jazz, Blues and Bourbon Whiskey.
