OPIUM WEIGHT ! OPIUMGEWICHT ! Welcome to the standard Animal - shaped Weights of Burma ! These interesting animal weights have long attracted the curiosity of travellers to Burma and are now very much coveted by collectors as they become harder to find. The term 'opium' weight is somewhat a misnomer. It arouses the romantic notion that these weights were used to weigh and measure out wads of acrid smelling opium that would then be smoked on platform beds in darkened dens. The term "opium" weight was probably coined by a foreigner with a lively imagination and an allure for the mystical East. While it is true that some of the smaller weights were used for measuring the heady sap, "opium" weights served a much wider, more useful and down to earth purpose. Originally they were used to weigh relatively high value products such as silver ingots which were used as currencies. Early European traders reported the use of these weights for measuring foreign gold and silver coins, pearls, rubies, coral, personal ornaments, spices, camphor, musk and costly medicines. More common products were weighed with dome shaped marble weights. Items were measured by a beam hung with two baskets or trays. Bronzegewichte in Tierform, seit der Kolonialzeit „Opiumgewichte" genannt, stammen vor allem aus Burma und Laos. Diese Massekörper wurden lange Zeit mit Balkenwaagen im alltäglichen Gebrauch eingesetzt. Heute werden sie auch als Kunstgegenstände gesammelt und Nachbildungen werden vielerorts als Souvenirs angeboten. Von den Pyu kennt man erste Tierfiguren aus den Jahren 100-400 n. Chr., wobei ungewiss ist, ob sie schon als Gewicht benutzt wurden. Erste urkundliche Erwähnungen finden sich aus der Zeit König Kyanzittha von Bagan (reg. 1084-1113). Ab dem 16. Jh. gibt es Berichte von Asienreisenden über die Gewichte. In einem Manuskript von Nandabahu, Verwalter von König Alaungpaya (1714-1760), werden Gewichte und typische Formen ab dem 13. Jh. beschrieben. Als Motive wurden meist verschiedene Fabelwesen und reale Tiere verwendet, die eine mystische Bedeutung haben. Sie änderten sich von Zeit zu Zeit und teilweise nach Landstrich. Oft verwendet sind die Hintha bzw. Hantha (eine mythische Ente oder Gans, die burmesische Form der Garuda), Karaweik (mystischer Kranich), oft auch eine Mischform zwischen den beiden. Der Toe bzw. To ist ein löwenartiges Fabeltier, mit dem Gesicht eines Löwen, Hörnern eines Rindes und Hufen und Schwanz eines Pferdes.
