FA Chairman Greg Dyke on the future of English football
The Football Association's Chairman Greg Dyke is to lead a commission with the aim of improving England teams' success at international level. Speaking at a lunch hosted by England team sponsors Vauxhall, Dyke admitted the lack of English-qualified players currently playing in the Premier League was "serious, very serious", and that he intended The FA to work "hand-in-hand" with the all sections of the game for the sake of the national team and youth development in this country. Dyke said: "The issue, quite simply, is this: In the future it's quite possible we won't have enough players qualified to play for England who are playing regularly at the highest level in this country or elsewhere in the world. As a result, it could well mean England's teams are unable to compete seriously on the world stage." The FA Chairman pointed to the proportion of regular Premier League players qualified to play for England -- which at 32 per cent last season has reached an all-time low. He added: "It is also crucial that English football finds a solution without undermining the undoubted success of the Premier League. We don't want to kill the golden goose in the search of the golden egg but we do have to do something if the English team is to prosper in the future. "If not it's hard to see England even challenging for the World Cup or the Euro Championship in the years ahead. "If not we will be letting down generations of English kids who might otherwise have made it at the top level in football but weren't given the chance. "If not we will be letting down the England fans who turn up in their thousands here at Wembley or watch the England team in their millions on the television. They want a successful England. "If not we will be letting down the 400,000 volunteers who work with kids every week across England in the belief that the very best will find their way through." Greg Dyke "It's time for action": Exclusive interview with the FA Chairman
Greg Dyke says the time for talking is over as he prepares to meet with his new Commission in the coming weeks. The FA Chairman has been putting together a group of people from across the game to look at what can be done to improve the fortunes of the England team in the future. And speaking to TheFA.com at the National Game Conference this week, Dyke revealed he's been impressed by some of the ideas that have been floated around so far. "We're having our first meetings quite soon," he said. "I've done a lot of thinking and a lot of talking, a lot of other people are as well, but we've got a team who will do the research and that sort of work. "I think we have some really good ideas around, but ideas aren't enough, you've got to understand how you can implement them." With the number of English players in starting line-ups of Premier League teams gradually reducing over the last few years, Dyke feels the time is right to get the Commission up and running. And after revealing to County FA representatives at the Conference that he believes English homegrown players do have the talent to breakthrough, he wants to find a way to help make it happen. He added: "The point of the thing is how do we make sure that English players with talent can get through this system? "We owe that to them and if we can do that, then we can get a better England team in the future. "I'm not so concerned about the England team now, but if we're down to 30 per cent of the starting players in the Premier League now, what's it going to be in five years' time? "20 per cent? 15 per cent? When do we do something? I think the time is now." Dyke addressed the 52 County FAs at St. George's Park on Tuesday, his first taste of the National Game Conference since his appointment as FA Chairman earlier this year. It's an experience he enjoyed too, taking part in workshops regarding areas of the grassroots game such as the future of adult 11v11 football and safeguarding and equality. "It's 40-odd years since I ran the local football team and was affiliated with leagues and suddenly all of those memories are flooding back," he added. "It's a very interesting conference. In the end, people coming together and getting to know each other is a great idea and you can't do it any other way." Greg Dyke Says Changes Are Key To Stop Decline In English Football
Football Association chairman Greg Dyke says failure to adopt the FA's plans to improve English football could lead to a "bleak" future for homegrown talent. At the heart of an FA Commission's four-point plan is the creation of a new tier within the Football League to accommodate Premier League B teams. There is also a call for a ban on non-European Union players outside of the top flight, the development of "strategic loan partnerships" between clubs, as well as a reduction in non-homegrown players in Premier League squads. "Positive, creative, together" Greg Dyke at National Game Conference
Greg Dyke has urged County FAs from across the country to draw inspiration from the title of this year's National Game Conference at St. George's Park -- Creating Positive Football Experiences Together. The FA Chairman spoke to representatives from all 52 County FAs on Tuesday morning as they gathered at the national football centre for the three-day conference. And as he reflected on The FA's 150th anniversary celebrations from the weekend, Dyke told his audience about the importance of their work in local communities across England. "It's been some week in the life of The FA and many of you were in London to share our 150th celebrations at the weekend," said Dyke. "I thought it was an extraordinary event, with people from all over the globe coming and sitting on the very site, at the same time, where 150 years earlier, the Founding Fathers of the game put pen-to-paper to its first rules. "Those Founding Fathers were individuals who between them created our game, gave up their time freely and shared a collective purpose to take what was the ancient game of football and make it better. "A lot has changed over 150 years, but even today, meeting at this modern state-of-the-art facility, it is good to know that the love of the game, unselfish commitment and collective purpose to make the game better is as much alive today in this room as it was 150 years ago." After Monday evening's opening address from Director of National Game Kelly Simmons and National Game Chairman Roger Burden, the County FAs are taking part in workshops throughout Tuesday. These cover National Game topics such as safeguarding and equality, adult football recommendations, investment in staff and marketing and commercial, with Dyke also focusing on three key elements. "Perhaps the title of this conference itself is the best place to start with those five words, Creating Positive Football Experiences Together," he explained. "Firstly, football has to be a positive experience. At any level of the game, we want our participants, supporters, officials and volunteers to have a good time and enjoy themselves. "The one thing that football has always been for me, first and foremost, from when I was first playing the game to being a Chairman in the Board Room, is that it's always been fun. "For many of you, just being involved in football is a very positive experience and that's something that we shouldn't lose sight of. "We know there are nearly 7m people up and down the country who get involved in our game and if, through our hard work, they have a positive experience and fun, then you are achieving a great deal. "A positive early experience of the game will increase participation and increase the quality of young boys and girls playing the game." With plenty of good examples from County FAs in how to get the best out of their local communities through football, the Conference is a good chance for everyone to interact, share ideas and improve. And it's the opportunity to do that under the roof of St. George's Park which Dyke believes is important this week. "The second theme from this conference is the need for us all to be creative," he added. "Football is changing, because society is changing. Today, we are looking at the impact of new working and leisure cultures and the shift from formal weekend football to the uptake of small-sided and informal games. "To make changes, we need to be creative, flexible and tailor our support to understand what our participants want in the lives they now lead. "But we also need to protect and value our traditional product in creative ways. "Finally, and most importantly, our conference title calls for us to work together. "Could there be a more important value in football than teamwork? Off the field, we are always better when we are the sum of our parts. "Working together means not just within the counties, leagues and clubs by sharing experience, knowledge and practices but with local partners, councils and companies, who can be so crucial to our success. "It also means working with each other at conferences like these is important, as when everyone knows each other, they tend not to send e-mails but to pick up the phone and ask for help. "We all face the same challenges and have the same ambitions -- there is a wealth of experience and understanding in this room so let's embrace it and embrace each other." We'll bring you more from the conference throughout this week...- published: 29 Oct 2013

Greg Dyke unveils FA 150 plaque at birthplace of English football
Clubs up and down the country are set to support The Football Association's 150th birthday celebrations this weekend. Teams at every level are honouring the landmark day with a host of activities, including players wearing special FA150 t-shirts during pre-match warm-ups. The anniversary comes after a packed programme of events across the year including a nationwide Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day in August and a celebration of 150 grassroots heroes at Buckingham Palace earlier this month. The FA has used its 150th anniversary to shine a light on the national game and specifically the seven million players of all ages, 400,000 volunteers, 300,000 coaches and 27,000 qualified referees who all help keep the grassroots going. At the elite level, The FA runs 25 England teams, across men's, women's, youth and disability football, utilising the world-class facilities of Wembley Stadium and St. George's Park. Birthday celebrations began earlier this week with a ceremony at Wembley Stadium on Monday to mark the successful search for living descendants of the eight Founding Fathers of Football without whom football as we know, love and play it today, would not exist. Relatives travelled from as far afield as New Zealand and the United States to take part in a ceremony honouring their ancestors. And today a plaque unveiling was held at the Grand Connaught Rooms -- site of The FA's founding in 1863. FA Chairman Greg Dyke and General Secretary Alex Horne took part in the ceremony, which means there is finally a permanent record of the birthplace of the world's most popular sport. Dyke said: "Finally, the home of football is being marked. It was important to recognise the past and what the Founding Fathers of football did and what has been achieved. "When you come to London and you're a football fan, this might well now become one of the places on the map to visit. "You go to Wembley...you might go to Arsenal or Chelsea or Tottenham and then you come here -- because this is where it all started." On Saturday night, in central London, a Gala Dinner will be held at the Grand Connaught Rooms -- the location of the Freemasons' Tavern that staged the very first FA meeting on 26 October 1863, with HRH The Duke of Cambridge, The FA President, the chief guest. To read the official message from HRH The Duke of Cambridge, the President of The FA, click here. Taking centre stage at the dinner will be the original 1863 FA Minute Book, which is currently on display at the British Library until 19 December. Valued at £2.5m, the book contains the handwritten13 original laws of football penned a century and a half ago by Ebenezer Cobb Morley, The FA's first secretary. Alongside Dyke and Horne, guests will also include, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, UEFA President Michel Platini and a trio of FIFA World Cup winners in George Cohen, Martin Peters and Sir Geoff Hurst. The FA Board and FA Council will also be in attendance, along with guests from around the world highlighting that football is the only true global game.- published: 25 Oct 2013
