But at the season opener at Fort William, the American could only finish 20th -- the beginning of a surprisingly unsuccessful season. Three races later, he eventually managed to get onto the podium, only to forfeit the last two races due to an injury.

Julien Absalon (BMC) took the 27th victory in his storied career in the Elite men's race "It is nice to win the first World Cup [of the year," agreed Absalon, "especially here because I was pretty disappointed last year because I had two crashes [at the world championships] and I broke my ribs, so I was a bit afraid of this course. Especially the rocky garden where I crashed. But all this week the feeling was good. I had a poor start, so I used a lot of energy during the first lap to overtake about fifteen guys. Once I got up to Nino it was a nice fight though."

The Swedish Orica-AIS rider outsprinted UCI World Cup leader Lizzie Armitstead by milimeters. Belorussian champion Alena Amialiusik of Astana-BePink rounded up the podium in Cittiglio. The 123,7 kilometre race is the second round of the UCI World Cup and takes place in the province of Varese, in the north of Italy. Against the scenic backdrop of the Lago Maggiore 139 riders signed the sheet and took the start at 1.30pm.
