Blow for reformists as Rafsanjani and Mashaei are barred from Iran election
Two important figures in Iranian politics including the former president, Akbar Hachemi Rafsanjani, have been barred from running in next month's presidential election. Euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe for your daily dose of international news, curated and explained:http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a Euronews is available in 13 other languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In a blow to potential reformists, the list of eight cleared to stand by the electoral watchdog contains only candidates who are considered hardline conservatives. Also excluded by the Guardian Council is President Ahmadinejad's former chief of staff, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei. He had already been described as a "deviant" by conservative clerics who suspect him of wanting to curb their influence. Rafsanjani - who was president between 1989 and 1997 - had been sidelined from power over tacit support for reformers at the last presidential election in 2009, which brought street protests amid claims of fraud. Last week around 100 conservative deputies in parliament launched a petition seeking to bar Rafsanjani and Mashaei from this year's race. A spokesman for the Guardian Council said on Monday that it would bar physically feeble candidates, a comment seen by many as a hint that it could disqualify Rafsanjani. Among the eight candidates retained on the shortlist are Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and former nuclear negotiator Hassan Rowhani. The Guardian Council's decision means the next president looks set to be loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. For instance, Principlist candidate Mohammad Reza Bahonar says under Article 176 of the Iranian Constitution, only the State Expediency Council and the Leadership have the final say in all macro-economic and foreign policy matters and not the executive body. There are also a few top Principalists who have formally announced their candidacy. There will be vying for votes along with reformist and independent candidates. Movie Screening: "The Iran Job"
Please join us for the documentary movie screening of "The Iran Job" at Calgary Plaza Theater on Sunday December 2nd, 4 to 6 PM.
The Iran Job follows American basketball player Kevin Sheppard as he accepts a job to play in Iran. With tensions running high between Iran and the West, Kevin tries to separate sports from politics only to find that politics is impossible to escape in Iran. Along the way he forms an unlikely alliance with three outspoken Iranian women and devoted basketball fans. Thanks to these women, his apartment turns into an oasis of free speech, where they discuss everything from politics to religion to gender roles. Kevin’s season in Iran culminates in something much bigger than basketball: Iran’s reformist Green Movement. The Iran Job features some of the most cutting-edge Iranian rap and hip-hop artists. Session 13: Archaeological Translation, Cyrus the Great's Cylinder
Over the past several decades in Iran there has been a renewed interest in ancient Persia, particularly in the most glorious and innovative period: the Achaemenid dynasty (550-330 BC. J.-C). From this vast empire that stretched across the Iranian plateau only vestiges remain, including a set of cuneiform inscriptions engraved on rock walls or on the monuments of that time. Written simultaneously in several languages (Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian), these inscriptions have attracted the attention of European diplomats and later archaeologist-translators and have piqued the curiosity of European philologists since the eighteenth century and, most notably, in the nineteenth century.
Until recently, they remained obscure to Iranians, the heirs of this brilliant Persian Empire. Since the 1970s, at the instigation of the last Shah of Iran, these inscriptions began to be systematically translated into modern Persian. In recent years, private publishers have brought out an abundance of books on the Achaemenid, most of the latter having originally been written and published in Europe.
One of the most controversial inscriptions is Cyrus ‘Cylinder, known as the Human Being Chart. Today we have many translations of this Cylinder to different languages (Europeans and Persian). Therefore, first of all, we have to answer the questions like: Who is Cyrus the Great? What is the content of the Cylinder? How important is this inscription? And what is the role of this translation in our identity? In this research, I resort to National Library and Archives of IR of Iran to show that these translations (especially the Persian ones) fulfill a function of identity and political power by supporting the nationalist and reformist movement against the theocratic regime that attempts to conceal Iran’s pre-Islamic past.

The Iran Job Trailer
The Iran Job follows American basketball player Kevin Sheppard as he accepts a job to play in one of the world’s
most feared countries: Iran.
With tensions running high between Iran and the West, Kevin tries to separate sports from politics only to find that politics is impossible to escape in Iran.
Along the way he forms an unlikely alliance with three outspoken Iranian women. Thanks to them Kevin’s apartment turns into an oasis of free speech, where the women discuss everything from politics to religion to gender roles.
Kevin’s Iranian season culminates in something much greater than sporting glory: the uprising and subsequent
suppression of Iran’s reformist Green Movement – a powerful prelude to the sweeping changes across the Middle East in the wake of the Arab Spring.

ELECTIONS IN IRAN; Students reject reformists and conservatives !
Shiraz University- 10 October 2008 Larijani, speaker of Mullahs parliament was to take part in a debate amongst students. Similar to AmirKabir University which in 2006 displayed the student wrath in an act well remembered, this time in Shiraz University a courageous student named Mohsen Zarin Kamar, who took the platform, despite strict control and repression, and openly defied Larijani, the mullahs parliament and Ahmadinejad and the totality of the clerical regime. He is spending solitary confinement and is under torture along with 3 other activist ; Kazem Rezaii, Abdol Jalil Rezaii, Loghman Karimi. Sir you may be the speaker of Majilis But the issue is this Majilis is not legitimate for a lot of reasons namely extensive rigging And sir you are not legitimate! I want to break my silent agony here and now and announce that : There are three things I hate the most: First: Its Ahmadinejad The deception and demagogy Defamation I hate his ways and his looks I hate the Majilis which Is not in power on popular vote Another student at the presence of Larijani denounces both the reformists and conservatives and specifically says at the time of Khatami and Rafsanjani, we swore to them and denounced them, so dont toss your differences into our faces. The time for pretence has gone. We do not want any reformist or conservatives least Ahmadinjead. Since his rein, no one can breathe, suppression is timidly high. Look at rising corruption and addiction. Sir, selling ones body to gain bread for family is not a political issue. You are incapable of solving these issues. What opposition are we talking about? It is a laughing stock to claim that state controlled dailies Kayhan and Reslat are supposed to be opposition papers when only a slight critism by some one is equal to prison and disappearance! It is the paradox of our history This student was abducted after his intervention and his where about is unknown. In the next scene; a student tries to add a point during an announcement reading by University Bassidge force, and he is viscously attacked by a Bassidge member. This student is arrested after a week.- published: 27 May 2009
