Sign-off (or closedown) is the sequence of operations involved when a radio or television station shuts down its transmitters and goes off the air for a predetermined period; generally this occurs during the overnight hours. It is the opposite to a sign-on (or startup), which usually takes place at the start of the day.
Sign-offs, like sign-ons, vary from country to country, from station to station, and from time to time; however, most follow a similar general pattern. Many stations follow the reverse process to their sign-on sequence at the start of the day. Sign-off messages can be initiated by a broadcast automation system just as for other television programming, and automatic transmission systems can cut off the carrier signal and trigger the actual shutdown of the transmitter by remote control. Generally, after the carrier signal is cut, the viewer only sees or hears static after an analog television station signs off. Digital stations will likely display a message after the sign off; however, they may simply cut to a black screen with no sound. Occasionally, the signal is cut off entirely, causing digital broadcast receivers (cable/satellite boxes, digital TVs/converter boxes) to display error messages.
A sign is an object, quality, event, or entity whose presence or occurrence indicates the probable presence or occurrence of something else. A natural sign bears a causal relation to its object—for instance, thunder is a sign of storm, or medical symptoms signify a disease. A conventional sign signifies by agreement, as a full stop signifies the end of a sentence; similarly the words and expressions of a language, as well as bodily gestures, can be regarded as signs, expressing particular meanings. The physical objects most commonly referred to as signs (notices, road signs, etc., collectively known as signage) generally inform or instruct using written text, symbols, pictures or a combination of these.
The philosophical study of signs and symbols is called semiotics; this includes the study of semiosis, which is the way in which signs (in the semiotic sense) operate.

The Lord's Prayer, also called the Our Father and the Pater Noster, is a venerated Christian prayer that, according to the New Testament, was taught by Jesus to his disciples. Two forms of it are recorded in the New Testament: a longer form in the Gospel of Matthew as part of the Sermon on the Mount, and a shorter form in the Gospel of Luke as a response by Jesus to a request by "one of his disciples" to teach them "to pray as John taught his disciples" concludes with "deliver us from evil" in Matthew, and with "lead us not into temptation" in Luke. The first three of the seven petitions in Matthew address God; the other four are related to human needs and concerns. The liturgical form is the Matthean. Some Christians, particularly Protestants, conclude the prayer with a doxology, a later addendum appearing in some manuscripts of Matthew.
The context of the prayer in Matthew is a discourse deploring people who pray ostentatiously.
In biblical criticism, the prayer's absence in the Gospel of Mark together with its occurrence in Matthew and Luke has caused scholars who accept the two-source hypothesis (against other document hypotheses) to conclude that it is probably a logion original to Q.

I had a hunch that KMGH would sign-off after the Late Movie and the home viewer would leave the Beta machine running...well I was right! What a find! Begins with a CBS Late Movie bumper and a promo for The Corn is Green; which leads into the sign off (an interesting handwritten drawing of a striped cat, a grandfather clock, and the calls/STL links) and mention of the NAB Television Code. The Pastoral Call follows, a religious segment presented by The Archdiocese of Denver and presented by Pastor Tom Tripler. Another sign-off bumper follows with the normal information on studio address, transmitter, etc. An LDS-produced SSB video follows, followed by a bit of dead air before the carrier is cut. Enjoy this old piece of Colorado history! All rights reserved. I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE CONTENT I...
I WANT YOUR MTV! If you have old Beta or VHS tapes containing recordings of MTV from 1981 - 1987, I would love to talk with you (especially if the tapes contain the videos, VJs, and commercials!) I'll either buy your tapes, accept donations, or transfer them for you! Shoot me a message and let's talk! This recording was discovered at the tail end of an old betamax tape and was recorded on June 4th, 1980. It contains The Captioned ABC News, some promos, and finally the evening sign-off. WYES is a PBS station located in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I'll either buy your tapes, accept donations, or transfer them for you! Shoot me a message and let's talk! This commercial break collection came from an old Betamax tape recording of SHOCK TREATMENT, recorded on November 25th, 1980. The original taper must have gone to bed because the tape recorded straight through the movie and right into the late night edition of the news, concluding with the sign-off.
Unfortunately this signoff was obscured by the taper having fallen asleep and forgetting to close his/her's PVR reminder notice on the screen. (The tape ended about an hour after this signoff and the movie was not actually recorded as planned)
Here's (as far as I'm aware) the earliest known (to date) sign-off sequence, from any channel, to turn up here. This one is from WLS Channel 7, found at the end of a Umatic videotape that was mostly recorded over with high school girls' gymnastics home movies from 1977 (boooooo!) and includes: The ending moments of the Saturday Night Movie presentation (in glorious "pan-and-scan" and quite terrible color - it's not the recording - compare to how the commercials look!) of "The Guns of Navarone" [1961] starring Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn. Followed, in that order, by: "Swirling stars" animated opening/closing title sequence of Saturday Night Movie (with voiceover, by Wayne Atkinson, promoting next day's ABC Sunday Night Movie presentation of "The Gambler" [1974] starring Ja...
This clip from WQAD begins with the final story of the night involving a recovering young woman, followed the closing along with a weekend magazine voiceover promo. After local spots for Montgomery Ward and the Hi-Fi Expo, a Sunday Late Show promo bumper for the Firechasers is presented. Next, a sermon-style Christian Inspiration given by the Rev. Robert Wiedrich of the Wesley United Methodist Church. Finally, WQAD signs off for the night with studio and transmission information along with a rundown of all other stations by the Register Broadcast Group.
Here's a doozy. WVTV 18 Milwaukee's News Final (with Susan Wirth at the desk and Bob Beringer announcing), The Lord's Prayer (with artwork from The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art) and the signoff sequence including the National Anthem and a few seconds of real static. They used to shut off the transmitter! NOTE: Due to music administration rights, "The Lord's Prayer" music has been removed from this sequence.
KAYU TV, Channel 28, Spokane, WA. The Bart Simpson frame stays on screen overnight, so not sure if transmitter stayed on or it's turned off and they push that signal thru the cable company.

Wake up all alone
Sending postcards back to home
On the road
If the medication works
Could I be the way I was?

I'm the worst type of sinner
You know
You painted a picture
Happier than I can afford
Nobody can save me

Nobody can say what I'll do if I'm alone
